Ok, here is your 1st look at the Jets 2021 Opening Day 53 Man Roster

I think Cashman or, if he gets hurt, Phillips is the third LB when they run 4-3-4.  Otherwise its a 4-2-5 or 4-1-6-with 6, can basically be the best 6 Db types potentially available players to play there.

Look at the players on SF or Atlanta that make that system work.  The Jets talent on the back 7 is woefully behind at least SF's.  The offense will be ahead of the defense, for the first time anyone can remember.

I can already picture how Zachapono will tear the D to shreds in training camp and the hype will be even more real!

The big question will be: are the DBs completely useless or is Zachapono legit?

Oh I can't wait!

RB -> Coleman, Carter, Johnson

Everyone else is on the bubble.

The LB group is super interesting. Some people will look at it and say... WTF? We don’t have enough! Where is the experience? Others will look at it and think... Okay, 4-3 and some 4-2-5, there are some smart tackling machines there, some run-and-hit guys! Really excited to see what Saleh does with this group.

You have GVR as a lock, I think it's 50/50 between him and lewis right now and I have a feeling Joe really likes Lewis.

Also I completely forgot about Josh Doctson, I wonder if he hadn't opted out last year what kind of season he could have had with all the injury's to our WR core.

My sense is that GVR makes the cut over Lewis, especially after Lewis' absence last year. But I don't think either start.

Did we ever find out why lewis missed time?

Before that he was out best preforming guard according to pff. Before the start of free agency I'd have said he would have been cut but he's still around and as I say I think Joe douglas really likes him. It's going to be a real battle between GVR, lewis, clark and feeny in training camp.

I thought I heard he told Gase off.

If that is the case, he should be a lock.

It may be coincidental but the fact that left defensive end and right guard were not addressed may have been intentional by JD to see if his draft picks last year in Zúñiga and Clark might step up

Clark seems like the anomaly from last year. Between the injuries and all the weirdness on the team. Douglas loved him but Gase had a weird thing with him and we never really knew what it was. Would solve a lot of problems for the Jets if that guy could just be average.

Not sure. I don't know if the relationship became toxic or what.

There are very few locks on this team..especially with a new coach..Davis is more a track star than football player...he better learn to be a more physical tackler or he won't be here.

He'll be here.

I would flip Ty Johnson and Perine. Ty looked better than Perrine last year,

Doctson isn’t making this team.

I can’t see Bless Austin as a bubble player. And Bennett Jackson, despite providing ST value is likely getting cut. The DBs we just added provide ST value and have more upside.

Aside from that, looks good. Lots of competition along the DL. Huff looks out of place.

A nice serious take on where we stand.  Let's take a look.

QB - We obviously need to add a veteran QB.  It is my hope that Douglas does not spend big $ and signs somebody for one year at or around the minimum.  That veteran should be competition for Morgan.  I would also allow White an honest chance to win the backup job too.  Time to take the training wheels off Morgan.

RB - Coleman, Carter, Perine and Johnson are the likely Jets this season.  If Douglas is going to bring in an established veteran, it will be here imo.  We agree that Johnson is on the bubble.  Perine plays special teams and - in a pinch - can fill any role and as a one cut runner, is a good fit for the zone scheme.  Johnson runs outside the tackles and has trouble inside.

TE - This will be a real derby.  As you indicated, nobody is truly safe and everybody is playing for the career except perhaps Daniel Brown who has become a core special teams player.  I believe that Herndon will start because Herndon is a better inline blocker.  If he is healthy, he is our starter.  Yeboah I see as competing against himself.  The Jets seek to develop him.  The question is whether that will take place on the practice squad or the roster.  He needs to gain weight before he can be of use as an inline tight end and that will not happen this season.  The job as second tight end is wide open.  I think Tyler Kroft has the inside track to be the other tight end.  He is a decent blocker.  It is why he is in the NFL.  He is a real threat to Wesco and Griffin both of whom are staring into the abyss.  Wesco's best chance is to impress the coaches as a fullback/H-back.  As the inline guy, he failed to make a run at Herndon last year and he had his chance.  Brown was the player who emerged on top when Herndon went down.  I think we will keep Herndon, Kroft and Brown.  Whether Yeboah sticks is up to him.  At 250 lbs, he is not going to help us.  At 265 lbs, he can be a threat inline.  Remember, Lafleur likes to disguise his looks.  His tight ends have to be a threat to line up inside or it gives away the play.

WR - I too think that Davis, Mims, Moore and Cole are the top four.  While Crowder is #5, his job is in jeopardy because he is a slot only player.  If he loses that job to Moore or Cole, then he is goners.  We will not keep a $10 million slot only reserve.  We just won't.  That will open up a spot for somebody.  I doubt it will be Berrios.  Again, he is a slot only and that is too limited for a reserve role.  I think Moore will return punts.  If we cut Crowder, the last spot becomes a wide open derby.  I think it is likely to go to one of the Smiths.  Jeff Smith has so much potential.  His ship may have sailed last year but you never know.  The victor is anyone's guess.  For Crowder fans, I remind you that he had his chance to prove he could play outside last season and failed.  That is working against him imo.

OL - The starters will be Becton, AVT, McGovern, _____, and Fant.  I left left guard blank because the entire bench has an equal chance of being the starter.  Lewis, Van Roten and McDermott are likely playing for the career.  They will start or be on the bubble.  Feeney has the inside track but the challenge from Clark and McDermott for the job is real.  Feeney is most likely safe as the swing man inside.  If Clark or McDermott wins the job, then Lewis and Van Roten are in trouble.  Edoga will make the club as the swing tackle imo.   I could see the Jets pick up a veteran here if we cut Lewis or Van Roten.  As for the undrafted free agents, I am doubtful that any will be a threat to make the team but some will be on the practice squad.

DL - We differ on the players who will make the club at defensive line.  I see Fatukasi and Franklin-Myers are unlikely to be on the final roster.  I could see them both traded for late round picks or veteran WRs, TEs or OL during camp.  It is not a knock on either player, particularly Fatukasi who is an ideal starting nose tackle.  But they lack both positional and scheme versatility.  Fatukasi is a poor fit as a one-gap lineman.  If he makes the club it will be in short yardage and goal line duty.  That is too limited for a roster spot imo.   Franklin-Myers played well as a two-gap end.  Above average imo.   But in a one gap scheme, he lacks the positional versatility to kick inside and lacks the scheme versatility to move laterally well enough to seal the edge on running plays and that is the job of a 4-3 end.  Especially on the strong side where he will have to make his living.

Instead, I see our starters as Lawson, Quinnen, Rankins and Phillips.  With Curry, Zuniga, Marshall and Rashid as reserves.  Sheppard can make the team depending on what happens with Fatukasi and Franklyn-Myers.  If both get traded then his spot will depend on how Marshall and Rashid fare in training camp.  If both show promise, which is likely for Marshall since he is an ideal fit as a one-gap tackle and possible for Rashid, then he too is out.  Unlike Fatukasi and Franklin-Myers, Sheppard is a good fit as a 4-3 one-gap tackle and could very well survive.    Regardless, we both see the Jets keeping eight DL.

LB - Who knows?  This is wide open and filled with question marks.  Is Mosely a three-down fit?  Can Davis earn a contract extension (it's a one-year deal folks)?  Can Sherwood run well enough to play the WILL?  Is Sherwood as SAM?  Is Nasirildeen the starting WILL?  Who are the backups?  I think anything can happen here.

I think it is safe to say that Mosely, Davis, Sherwood and Nasilildeen will make the team.    Blake Cashman is competing against himself.  He has to stay healthy to earn a roster spot and hold off the charge from the reserves.  If he can't, then that opens up two roster spots (we both see six roster spots for linebackers).  It could be any of the players in competition.  Unlike the players competing at say - WR - there is genuine opportunity at linebacker.  It could be anybody including Brandon White, who you list at Safety.

Corner - Who knows?  I think it is safe to say that Hall and Austin have the inside track to start.  But Pinnock, Jackson, Guidry, Carter, Echols and Dunn all have legitimate chances to make the final roster.  I was surprised by how many corners we added.  I think the Jets may view Echols and Dunn as Safeties and will list them there.  I expect we will keep six corners, seven if you include Hardee.  Thus we keep everybody (Echols and Dunn are at Safety).

Safety - Who knows?  It is safe to say that the Jets will keep Maye, Joyner and Davis.  But it is not etched in stone.  I think that White is viewed as a linebacker by the Jets.  I think that Echols and Dunn are viewed as Safeties.  We will not keep five safeties (we agree it will be four).

We will keep one kicker, one punter and out long snapper.  It is going to be tough final cuts for the Jets this year and players who make the team will have to fear the practice squad guys as the season develops.

Ashtyn Davis is not a lock and Perine is definitely on a bubble.

Yeah he is.  He would have to totally bomb not to make the team.  He did okay last year and had the typical rookie ups and downs.  No way he is not making the team.  His upside is too great.

Just can’t see in what scenario Mosley is playing in a 4-2-5? Now I’m sure we’ll be moving in and out of schemes, but if I seeMosley on the field, that’s the area I’m looking for a quick 10 yards.

Only thing is Rashed may make the team if he flashes at all as a Pass Rusher since we are in need there. And like TE Yaboah I believe OT Saltes was given 200K guaranteed so that would mean barring anything out of the ordinary you would think he would make the team.

Another one I must agree with you on.  The problem I saw with Davis last year is that he plays with reckless abandon that he gets himself injured.  I think he is the definition of all gas, no brake.

If he can stay healthy, he is a player.

He needs to be all gas and no break!

Just can’t see in what scenario Mosley is playing in a 4-2-5? Now I’m sure we’ll be moving in and out of schemes, but if I seeMosley on the field, that’s the area I’m looking for a quick 10 yards.

I know he hasn’t played in almost 2 years and it’s a new system but he was a top 5 linebacker in the entire league. I think with that kind of talent Saleh will make it work.

Something that can be said about the whole Elijah Moore vs Crowder thing is that they can both thrive and actually be assets for eachother similar to how John Brown and Cole Beasley were being used in Buffalo. I remember when we played them and they were like gnats running crossing routes. And in my view Moore and Crowder are better pieces than both Beasley and Brown. Add Davis and Mims on the outside and we can definitely frustrate defenses.

Not as good as the Decker, Marshall years but better than anything we've had since.

I seem to be in the minority, but I absolutely want to keep Crowder. We saw what happened last year when the WR depth was compromised. This young QB needs to be given every possible chance to succeed. Taking away the best weapon on the team the last two years is not a great idea, even if we think we drafted his replacement.

I know it's way too early, but I gotta believe that John Marshall will make this team.

Zuniga has got a lot to prove IMO, and he is not a lock to make this team.

If he does make this team, it will be as an outside linebacker/pass rusher.

Add Zuniga to the linebacking crew, and add Marshall to the D line.

I think that the subtraction comes at cornerback.  The Jets do not need 7 cornerbacks and 4 safeties.   Lower that overall number to 10, if both Zuniga and Marshall make the team.

Ashtyn Davis is not a lock and Perine is definitely on a bubble.

What???????????  These are Joe D's 3rd and 4th round picks from last year.  Both are 100% locks to make the team.  Hes not cutting guys hes drafted just last year.  GMs dont work that way.
