Why exactly did JD Fall in love?

SF also fully intends to not start tray lance

and?

they still drafted him over fields

lance isn't ready to start in the nfl.  i think most agree on that.  but the point is despite what pete prisco thinks, fields was the 4th QB taken and a bunch of QB-needy teams passed on taking him.

now this doesn't mean he will be bad, or worse than the QBs taken before him.  he could be the best of the bunch.  no one knows at this point.

but just because pete prisco and a bunch of other people like fields more means nothing.  he may not be right, but i will go with nfl GMs, 2 of which took a QB not named justin fields (i'm excluding lawrence) and 3 or 4 of which chose not to take fields despite needing a QB of the future

I’m curious. I’m fully supportive of Wilson, moving forward. He’s a Jet now and that’s all that matters but reading draft grades I need reassurance.

Reading Pete Prisco and many others, there seems to be a theme that many feel Fields will turn out to be then second best QB in the draft. I was also high on Fields and skeptical of Wilson due to the cupcake schedule. That said he has amazing arm talent and fits our scheme.

So my question is what exactly did JD fall in love with? Is it just raw talent. JD always struck me as the guy who like the big rough and tumble, play hurt type of QB, not the pretty boy from Draper Utah. Is it scheme? Is it the tape?

I want nothing more then Wilson to succeed but I’m nervous how this all turns out. Help me out

Doesn't matter now.

Some of us preferred Wilson.  Some of us preferred Fields.  Some even preferred Lance.

But we drafted Wilson.  Why doesn't matter now.  Literally, it means nothing as of the second Wilson was drafted.

He's the Jets QB the next three years (minimum), and everything is now about how he does on the field in an NFL uniform.

Everything else is an backwards looking irrelevant afterthought.  Look forward, not back.

They'll be plenty of time for (appropriate) comparative analysis of these guys after this draft class start playing games.

As mentioned in the post you responded to is:  at the time of the draft Justin Field was the QB4 on NFL front offices boards and was passed on by several teams that needed a QB.

It does not mean he won't succeed by any means whatsoever(I hope he blows up). But damn did he land in the worst spot for a QB. Absolutely horrible location for him.

I dunno. It's still the Midwest, he's certainly familiar with the area winning the Chicago tribune silver football.

He's got Arob that's more than ZW has in terms of wr1. The jets do not have a Khalil Mack. It is not the patriots but like Zach it's an opportunity to become a legend

Trey Lance has Gps data of him running 21.5 mph that's unicorn stuff.

there is already a model for this in SF with super bowl year Colin kaep. The trey sermon pick was amazing by the way. Trey Lance will have Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchy as tackles and George kittle as a security blanket.

He's ready to go.

Because his skill set & leadership abilities adds up to a certain trip to Canon.  Here is the future Zac Wilson stepping up to the podium with glee to regale the fans as he receives the coveted gold jacket

If I recall correctly, Prisco gave the Jets an A for picking Hack

Your answer on the Jets process with Wilson and why they fell in love is in this article. It’s in another thread on the board

Was just going to post this...  To the OP’s question, it wasn’t JD falling in love.  It was an independent analysis by an entire team that came to the conclusion

I don't like the pick at 3.  The reality is that still doesn't justify Fields at 2 or 3 or Mac Jones going 15.

What were starting to see is position value pushing QB's up draft boards not down.  There's a lot of arguments that Pitts was the best player period in this draft.   There's also an argument that with 5 year slotting paying a TE top 5 money over a QB that you think can make it is insane.  No question that Lawrence was the top pick based on his positional value.  I still doubt Lawrence was rated a better prospect than Pitts.  Zach Wilson is probably a top 4 prospect and went 2 because of positional value.

Fields and Mac Jones may end up being better than Lawrence or Wilson.  Davis Mills or Mond may be the two best QB's in this class.   There is clearly consensus by NFL GM's that even with an overweight draft bias in taking QB's because of positional value, both Fields and Mac Jones aren't top 10 picks.

I really don't  agree with this. Everything starts with the OL and then the QB. There is no way you value a TE above a QB. For that matter I doubt you value a LT above one either.

The Jets organization had to convince themselves Zach was the man and blowing the Trevor Lawrence pick didn't matter.

Yes, I'm sure Saleh, LaFleur, an Knapp were thinking about the Jets blowing the Trevor Lawrence pick when they weren't here while watching tape on all the QBs.

That was my point.  The fact that Pitts went ahead of both Jones and Fields is a good indication that NFL GM's don't think that highly of them.  You can make the argument that the fact he went ahead of two great LT prospects says something about them as top prospects.

I don’t get the whole Fields v Wilson. Lance went 3rd and Carolina and Denver passed on him too. Wouldn’t it be Wilson v Lance ? They were the ones taken back to back. Or v the whole field of QBs?

True but I think because Fields has been positioned as the 1B to Trevor Lawrence's 1A since they were in HS he has a lot of supporters. He was the consensus #2 pick in most people's minds before last season.

Clearly many NFL teams did not view him in the light when it was all said and done.

Time will tell.

Many areas like scheme fit and Fields having epilepsy sure came into play. Also during question sessions Wilson likely showed better football acuman/IQ probably answering questions even quicker than Fields may have. In the Pro day Wilson's throws some unbelievable like the across the body/field deep throw were done effortlessly while Fields doing a similar throw had to launch every bit of strength he had and then almost fell to the ground doing it. These are all things that weigh more heavily in an evaluation than the competition which is a hard measure when it is a team sport that relies more on the better talent around you than on individual results. In individual sports like fighting then you measure those better on level of competition since it is one on one.

Oh, and Prisco is a Giant fan and in all my life I have never seen him say one positive thing about the Jets.

Simple :

Wilson has a much higher ceiling, better arm strength, quicker release, is more accurate, and is athlectic enough.

Fields has a higher bust factor if you dotn consider running in NFL a long term answer. I also believe he held onto the ball longer than any QB in teh draft.

The analysis in this thread is interesting and an enjoyable read as opposed to much of the pre-draft threads.  As for the OP, your first mistake was reading Prisco.  Your second was thinking his opinions are informed and worthwhile.  The bottom line is that in today's NFL, the success and failure of young QBs seems to have more to do with coaching and scheme and surrounding talent than the QBs themselves - who are all somewhat equally talented and skilled.  Case in point is Josh Allen, who had physical talent, but was raw and unpolished.  Buffalo handled him well thus far.  I would have put him 4th or 5th among the 2018 QBs and now look at him.

I wanted Fields too, but I'm going to support Wilson.  I'm just glad Gase and Darnold are gone.

Notoriously difficult to extrapolate college QB performance to pros. Decision is made. No reassurance needed. We’ll all find out together now.

Kevin, there seemed to be a clear dichotomy between the media talking heads and the NFL in terms of the relative value of Fields vs Wilson.

For the media, he was crowned early this year as the 2nd QB that might challenge Lawrence for the first pick. The Wilson comes along blows that narrative out of the water, and the media just reacts by digging in their heels and almost getting angry about Wilson. They did not watch tape or interview Wilson.

Casserly surveyed like 22 teams and ALL of them had Wilson #2. Scheffter has said that Wilson was a clear #2 on NFL boards with a gap between him and Wilson.

Look to the draft: Carolina and Denver both passed on him and both still have very unsettled QB situations. The 49ers who trade up to 3 for a QB never really even considered Fields.

Reality is that from a ranking stand point, the entire NFL essentially had Wilson ahead. And he should have been.

Trey Lance is a good looking mulatto. The NFL is a copycat business and he's a carbon copy of Mahomes. He will bust. This was a corporate move Imo, and if you want to debate it then why was Shanahan inquiring about Aaron Rodgers after the pick?

Justin Fields is a dangerous MF and the Bears are a perfect fit. I believe I either already posted that or I was going to. That dude's going to win a lot and often. He's a very different type of quarterback then our Zach Wilson.

So on to Zach. I just listened to JD on the Michael Kay show and they actually asked him the same question. He said he was watching the game in October, and the kid just pops off the screen. He said the off scheduled plays, the obvious arm Talent And the quick release. He said at the time they had not made a decision on Sam. He was just doing due diligence.

Once again I will personally go on record as stating that when I first watched the highlights of the QB's, Fields was the guy I thought was the best. However I have since warmed up to Zach, and I'm going to start my own thread and tell you why.
