Defense Wins Championships
The current talk is CB and Edge Rusher. However. I'm hoping for our current CBs in Hall and Bless to really stand out and absolutely emerge under coach Saleh here in 2021 and also for our mid to late round rookies within the secondary to have a fire lit under them due to Saleh leading them. And if Lawson becomes a fierce pass rusher @ DE alongside of Quinnen Williams? Well then CB/Pass Rush may not be as bad as most claim once 2021 is said and done with. If so? Don't be shocked to see JD attack the offensive side of the ball early and often because... With his first 5 picks within the first two rounds (over the past two drafts) he's went all Offense by drafting; LT: Mekhi Becton. WR: Denzel Mims. QB: Zach Wilson. LG: Vera-Tucker. WR. Elijah Moore. • He's double dipped @ O-Line (2020/2021) in Becton and Vera-Tucker. • He's double dipped @ WR (2020/2021) in Mims and Moore. Despite my username I'm loving it. Let's keep this trend continuing. I'd love for JD to continue this trend of attacking Offense early and often because well, Zach Wilson is his meal ticket to potential greatness as a GM. 2021 hasn't even yet began and I can already taste JD going down as an O-Line guru by going... • 1st round Center or Guard (best interior O-Lineman available). • 1st round Tackle to play RT opposite of Becton @ LT (Zach is A+ protected everywhere). Forget a trio; this automatically creates for an O-Line GRAND SLAM of 1st round picks on the O-Line in Mekhi / Vera-Tucker / Best Available 1st round interior O-Lineman and / best available 1st round pass protector. Zach Wilson is automatically blessed heading into only his 2nd season. • With WRs like Davis, Mims, Elijah, Crowder and Cole already in place @ WR and Carter locked in @ RB? ✓ This is where JD can attack a top 2 rated pass catching TE to complete the greatest offensive show @ MetLife. Zach Wilson being led by and leading a monster O-Line, WR's galore, a dominant TE and a game breaking RB. Wow. TLDR; If our secondary specifically can absolutely emerge under Saleh here in soon to be 2021? Our 2022 draft is the one that can completely take our entire Offense over the top because boy oh boy are the building blocks already in place (QB/LT/LG/WRs/RB). 4 more offensive picks next draft @ Interior O-Line, RT pass protector, Gamebreaking TE. and for sh*ts and giggles a 2nd round RB alongside of 4th round Cater (to create a deadly Northeast RB duo that can't be stopped come playoff Football). All while using all of our FA spending $$$ and mid to late round draft capital on Defense, Defense and more Defense (to compliment the likes of QW, Lawson, C.J Mosley, Marcus Maye and company). Yes. CB/Pressure would be ideal but just one more Interior O-Lineman, 1 more Pass Protector, an X-Factor TE and another beast RB would become epic. You heard it here on JN first. JD will not attack CB/Edge early 2022. He'll continue his trend of going all Offense during the 1st two rounds; in order to protect his #2 overall investment with A+ talent surrounding our QB position (everywhere).
choon328
CB will never be an early round pick in this scheme. Next year another pass rushing DE and a MLB will be the biggest needs. I don't expect the Jets to really ever be big players in FA again. The 2022 FA class is not good. That all being said I do think you will see the Jets take at least 1 more lineman or Tackle early within the 1st 2 rounds. Also I wouldn't be shocked if they tried to move up in the 1st round to get another pass rusher to go alongside Lawson and Quinnen. That may be at DE or DT. I wouldn't rule that out either.

WR,RB, EDGE,LB and maybe a corner. i know we have Sam withdrawal. we think every offensive position must be top of the line for a QB to succeed here. but the best QBs, the best teams didnt use there top 3 picks in 3 straight drafts on offense. or use 1st rd picks on the line 3 years in a row. and after next year the party's over. we get only one 1st rd pick, just like everyone else.
Jimmy 2 Times
Disagree. You can find awesome guards with one of our second round picks. If an edge is there, I’m taking one along with the RT. Of course this all depends on where we pick and how the board falls.

Lith
Based on today's roster, the 4 spots that I would hope to address with these picks are TE, OL, Edge and LB. Would like to see upgrades to OL. Mcgovern Fant and Van Roten all have 2 years left on contract and are easily released after this season with minimal cap impact. Draft another young stud on the OL and hopefully have 3 young guys to build arouond. Edge. Vinny Curry is on one year deal. Need a young pass rusher on opposite side of Lawson. This will probably be number one need heading into next season. LB is likely to be in the equation as well. Jarrad Davis on one year deal. We will know a lot more about Mosley and his ability to play Mike in a 4-3. We have a couple of young guys competing for Will (Nasirildeen, Sherwood & Cashman). LB will likely be a position we will look to upgrade. We are still in desperate need of TE, especially with Herndon in last year of his contract. Even if Yeboah makes the team and looks good, TE will likely be a need. If TE can be addressed in FA, maybe an RB to pair with Carter.

Considering 5th year options here is what we are looking at: ‘24 UFA- QW, Mims ’25 UFA- Bechton, Moore ’26 UFA- Wilson & AVT If fortunate, we will want to extend all 6 of these players. Signing a FA Center this past year would have been huge. Large $ of His contract would come off the books by the time our big extensions will be lining up to be addressed all the while Zach benefiting from his experience. In the meantime Jets need to develop young OL & WR the way Pittsburgh does. Every position can’t be 1st round picks. We need the 3-6 round picks to be solid contributors along with a mix of lesser FA signings that fit the system. TE is where you get a Kittle, Ertz, Andrews rounds 3-6. I think the goal is to stockpile young talent so that we can let some guys go in FA because we have their replacements already on the roster and start playing the comp pick game. The 1st and 2nd round picks though are the guys you count on to come in and play immediately. And with as many holes as our roster has, we need guys like Wlson (duh), Moore, AVT and Carter to contribute imediately. And with 5 more day 1/day 2 picks next yeaer, we should be able to fill some addtional holes with imapct starters. A year out from the draft I was just sepculating on where some of the major holes might be. As for the 3-6 round picks, if one or two of these CBs we added last week work out, we could have a secondary built almost exclusively on day 3 picks & UDFA. Hall, Austin, Guidry, Jackson plus the rookies Echols, Carter and PInnock. Would still like to add a vet to that group in case the rooks can't cut it. But it would be a nice bonus to have a strong young CB room without anything higher than a 5th rounder.

I fully understand where you were coming from and agree wholeheartedly ..... it’s just we are in such a good position moving forward if we don’t screw it up. One bad Sanchez extension or TJ / Mosley deal can take us out at the knees. We are beginning to fill our roster with good young talent. Managing it is crucial. Keep your key guys (Mahomes, Hill, Kelce , Mathieu, Jones) & sprinkle in fairy dust players to keep it rolling. Then FA will come here for less to seek a ring. It’s all such a delicate balance to get to the top and stay there. QB is where it starts and ends. Keep him upright, give him weapons and coach him up. nycdan
All of this is nothing more than a drug-fueled fantasy considering we would have another Free Agency period with one of the highest caps in the league again to work with. True, based on this season, we probably won't sign more than one high-value target, but overall, it will completely impact any draft strategy you might work out this early. Just a taste of who *might* become available (and we haven't even seen them play in 2021 so it's all wildly speculative): Allen Robinson Davante Adams Chris Godwin Calvin Ridley (no way he gets loose) Brandon Scherff Chandler Jones Von Miller (if he can stay healthy) TJ Watt (no way he gets loose) Bradley Chubb Fred Warner Darius Leonard Stephon Gilmore Tyrann Mathieu and the list goes on... Figure one of those guys probably ends up in a Jets uniform. Whoever it is will pretty much remove the need to draft a top player at that position. What there doesn't appear to be is a top-flight TE. That's really starting to make me wish there was another Kyle Pitts next year.

JD's first FA class may have underwhelmed, but at least he didn't saddle us with any of these bad, inescapable contracts that Macc was so fond of handing out. Trumaine Johnson is still couting $8M against our cap this year. Between him, Darnold, Enunwa and Bell, that is over $20M of wasted cap space this season for guys no longer on the roster. After this season, the only massive contract we will have left is Mosley. I agree that with all of the draft picks this year and next, we have a great opportunity to reset the roster with a young core of guys on thier rookie contracts. Get the big $ contracts off the books, and then use cap space to extend young stars. Add FAs to fill one or two holes and not look to rebuild an entire roster. We have a great opportunity to rebuild the right way thanks to the Adams and Darnold trades. Sprinkle in a 2-14 record to get us what we hope will be our franchise QB, and we could be in good shape. As long as Wilson works out. Certainly seems like the narrative around the team has changed this offseason. I really hope our optimism does not get tempered by what we see on the field this season.

Slausen ( 6th rd ) replaced Faneca in 2010. Mangold and Brick were making the big money. Faneca and Woody were at the end of there careers. i doubt they were costing us too much. if people here think that Wilson needs a whole offense of 1st rd picks, or 3 drafts top loaded with offense, then Wilson sucks. he will be no better than Sanchez without the great defense to bail him out.

Two first rounders on the OL is plenty. At a certain point, you have to think about the future. If you're drafting players high in the hope of retaining them on a second contract, it will be next to impossible to extend three OL in the $20M/year neighborhood it'll be by the time Becton is up. I agree that extending AVT will be difficult the year after Becton and perhaps same year as Wilson. I think staying at #23 or sliding back and grabbing the top C/Edge or CB would have been the better play (along w/ two 3rds) Water under the bridge. How do you judge Becton’s cumulative affect on AVT play and vice-versa? At least having a lesser player between Becton & C allows comparison of play. Hoping the C position can be supplemented this summer via trade.
sec101row23
Considering JD didn’t draft any Edge rushers this year and has only invested a 3rd round pick on Zuniga, I would think Edge is certainly in play early in 2022. I’m not sure there are going to be a lot of them though. It’s obviously early but aside from Thibodeaux there doesn’t seem to be too many elite edge prospects. If Zach Harrison from OSU continues his upward trajectory he could be in play. Maybe Sam Williams from Ole’ Miss. Depending on how you view Drake Jackson from USC, he’s sort of a LB/Edge hybrid, he could also be in play in the first. My early WR crush is Treylon Burks from Arkansas, 6’3” 230 pound do it all receiver.

Be_a_Jet
All I know is we better maximize the hell out of the 2022 draft because after that it’s back to reality - we will be in the same boat as most teams with 1 pick in each round again. next year is our chance to make our talent catch up to the talent around the league - have to walk out with at least 4-5 starters. I'd be fine next year trading back in the 1st and or 2nd to gain additional draft capital in 2023.
jcass10
1. Pass Rusher 2. Center 3. WR 4. CB But I'd also work extremely hard to move back and pick up a 1st Round (or later rounds) pick in 2023.
K_O_Brien
Round 1 - Pass rush & Corner Round 2 - Right tackle/Center & Linebacker Something like that. I'd put good money on the first pick being an edge.
#27TheDominator
I don't think these guys value corners near as much as us. We all want great corners and think of Revis, but I think these guys are fine with the Otis Smith and Aron Beasleys of the world.

He'll continue his trend of going all Offense during the 1st two rounds; in order to protect his #2 overall investment with A+ talent surrounding our QB position (everywhere). derp
Edge is going to be on the list of possibilities early even if the team has two good ones, let alone the potential one good one with Lawson. I think it’s straightforward to argue it’s the second most important position in the sport, this defensive scheme is built around getting pressure with the front four, and Douglas clearly believes in building in the trenches. This edge class is shaping up to potentially be a good one, too. Barring a major breakout from Zuniga, Hall, or Rashed it’s going to be on the list of needs next year and with four picks in the first two rounds there’s a great chance it gets addressed early. I absolutely get wanting to continue to build the offense but the needs on offense are quickly not becoming top of the first round positions. It’s the right three spots on the line and tight end. Barring a unicorn at guard or tight end or the desire to spend a high pick on a right tackle, those aren’t top of the first round positions. Wide receiver could absolutely be addressed but they’ve got enough talent in that room that guys could emerge for a system that’s in two or three wide almost all the time and in one wide more than four wide. Davis, Mims, and Moore will all be signed for multiple years after the upcoming season. This looks like a potentially good class to grab a center who fits the system. We’ll see what they decide to do with Fant after this year for right tackle, and also if Clark emerges as a capable right guard which would further reduce the need to address the OL. Tight end will be a huge need unless someone emerges. Hopefully that class is good. This past class wasn’t great beyond Pitts. Given most of the best tight ends in the league have gone on day two and three I wouldn’t be upset if they take one day two and one day three and just hope someone emerges. Probably a better strategy than using a first rounder. Important position for the scheme though. No need to go crazy on offense next year. Edge with a first rounder and TE/OL with two of the other three picks in the first two rounds and I’m a happy camper.

Treylon Burks is a nice call. Excited to see what he has to show this year. Olave also hopefully expands on his game since he came back for another season. Outside of Thibodeaux, who's the clear gem of the class at this point, I've been trying to look for those edge guys and it feels like there isn't a whole lot early on that jumps out at this stage. Harrison looks like a quick twitch guy that I'm interested in. Drake Jackson can breakout this year and has good talent, has some good power to his game, interested in seeing him develop his pass-rushing moves further. Karlaftis from Purdue is interesting, but I wouldn't call him elite, just plays the run well and is a violent hand puncher who could still develop. Overall, just a bunch more guys that are kind of in that middle tier who hopefully break out this year.

I'm very glad we didn't try to take a mediocre one, though I do regret missing out on what Tremble could've been in this offense. Kyle Juszczyk plays a huge role in the 49ers offense and I don't really see a guy I'm excited by about to replace that.

Corey Davis is not that guy. We'll see. If you put any stock into PFF, they're extremely high on him giving him an 86.9 grade. The guy had 945 yard in only 12 games played last year. And this was in a run 1st offense where he played 2nd fiddle to AJ Brown who was getting most of the touches.
