Jets @ Panthers Week 1

Darnold is in year 4 and the panthers extended his 5th year option. They gave him like 18 million. He has 38 games to prove himself

If Darnold looks like trash again, the Panthers are not rolling him out again as a starter next year, regardless of any 18 million commitment. They will bench or cut him, and move on.

Or a worse game. For the same reasons

Don't think so. The longer into the season we wait for this game, the more expectations on Wilson to perform. This is week 1, for a rookie, there's a long list of excuses if Darnold wins the game. If this was week 10 we'd be wondering if Wilson had what it took to be QB1.

Having this happen in week 1 is perfect. Especially if we light it up.

A better roster. They have a star rb perhaps you've heard of him, Ed McCafferys boy

Meanwhile the Jets don't have stars, they don't even have outside linebackers they have converted rookie safeties. The jets corners are also trash, there's no tight end and also half the o line sucks

The Panthers Rankings last year in DVOA:

Rush defense; 20th (the Jets were actually 8th)
Pass defense: 23rd
Pass offense: 20th
Rush offense 16th (true that CMac was hurt)

Yes the Jets were worse in most categories, but we've hopefully made enough of a leap this year through FA, the draft and replacing the worst coach in the league. I don't think it's out of the question the Jets could beat a mediocre Panthers team with a bad QB and no Curtis Samuel.

The Panthers have a bad OL and make no pressure with their front 7. The Jets have a top DL and are good at stopping the run. Fant, Becton and McG are decent pass blockers going up against a mediocre pass rush. Also the Panthers are relying on a rookie CB, which is historically a difficult position for transition. LBer is an easy position for rookies to make an impact plus there’s 2 veteran starters at LB.

McCaffrey is good but no OL and good running back tends to not be a winning formula.

Dont make sense.  We are too busy touting the greatness of the Darnold led panthers.  HAHAAHAHAHAHA.

Rob Saleh and the D will dominate this game.  Easy win.  Jets 24 Panthers 13.

For how much some are looking to turn this into the most meaningful of all games that will define everything, it wouldn't be even slightly surprising if this is a game that quickly gets driven by absolutely everything but QBs, considering it's a battle between a veteran JAG on a new team, and a rookie's first game.  This could easily be a very conservative passing game on both sides to start the season off, as they are likely more worried about winning than making career assessments based off of one game.

They line is weak it's true but they have legit weapons. Robby is a top 20 receiver

How is Brian burns on one side and hassan Reddick on the other a mediocre pass rush?

Fant and mcg suck. Jaycee horn is a stud. The jets are learning a new offense system and a new defense system

The Jets know Darnold’s weaknesses that's the only advantage they have in this game

This is going to be a pressure packed game for Wilson. Can't think of a tougher situation for the kids first game. Darnold is in a no lose situation while this is almost a must win for Wilson or the talking heads will all be screaming the Jets made another bone headed move letting Sam go and that Wilson is a bust.

On the other hand if Wilson has a great game it'll give him a cushion for when he does have a bad game (like all rookie QB's do).

I think much more pressure on Sam entering his 4th year. If he can’t beat a Jets team coming off one of the worst seasons ever, led by a rookie QB, dear Lord.

you know what would be funny, if Wilson doesnt even start.

i fully expect JD to get a vet like Foles in here. no way we go with 2 rookies as our QB.

i think the NFL took a chance on this one. we should sit Wilson just to screw them like there trying to screw us.

chances are Wilson will struggle in his first game. Sam should play better. they should have given Wilson a few games under his belt before this one. this would have been a great week 6 game.

either the NFL is stupid or are setting us us to look bad.

You want to know how this game is gonna go? Look at each roster and count how many of theirs would start on ours and vice versa

Other than Becton and hopefully avt and qw that's 3 guys

Meanwhile they have like a a dozen guys who would start here no problem

do we?

we have a brand new coaching staff that never played with sam. they know as much about Sam as anybody else in the league.

now maybe if Gase was here he would know private conversation and meetings with Sam where he knows Sam doesnt like this, or is really uncomfortable when the defense does that.

Darnold is going to pick us apart...and he should. Ill be rooting for Sam to have a big game.

hahahahahahahahha this is silly. Sammy cant hit the deep ball consistently and robby is basically all deep ball.

Whats our biggest weakness in the defense? apparently CB.

Sammy just isnt capable of attacking our weak spot. I'll be there to laugh my ass off in person.

Oh man. Sam comes into this with a lot of karma to put wind in his sails.  Can't fathom how high the motivation will be for him, Robbie, etc.

Conversely, his temptation to hero ball under those circumstances will be an opportunity for takeaways.

Key is for Wilson to keep his head clear of the comparison with Darnold - he has to keep his head and play his game and stay under control. I wouldn't be surprised if Saleh sat him for game 1 (ala Baker, Herbert) to protect him.

This game is ripe for media to take either of these your QBs apart to start the season...

Even if we lose, we have to look at the bigger, long-range picture. Zach’s here for a while. He and the team will settle in and learn to win. Jets 20, Carolina 17.

I like how all the winning predictions have the Jets defense holding the panthers to 13 points but no one is predicting the Jets to the score over 30

This is not how it goes. Offenses are routinely scoring in the 30s. The jets defense does not even have starting corners. Points are going to be scored.

If the Jets win, ZW is going to have to keep pace. Like 41-35 type of game. This isn't Rex Ryan football, The new 4-3 defense will not carry this team.

Maye, hell both our safeties over theirs, I'd take Davis over Robby Anderson and Crowder, Mims or Moore over Marshall and Moore, Herndon over their TE who isn't even involved in their passing game, right guard and center is a mess for both teams, I'd also take our QB over theirs. It's closer than you think.

Haasan Reddick has played 4 good games in his career, in a contract season. Burns is good but Becton is better, if Burns goes up against Fant it’s a bit worrying but Fant’s weakness is run defending, he only let up 3 sacks all last season. McG’s second half of the season performance was top 10 for a center on PFF, he was like 28 in the first half of the season. Jaycee Horn may end up good but he’s a rookie CB, rookie CBs struggle no matter how highly touted they are.

As for Robby, he isn’t a top 20 WR, he’s not even the Panthers best WR. Considering the state of Carolina’s OL, how does their QB perform under pressure?

I have seen this story before.   Is there any doubt that Darnold will torch the Jets and Wilson will struggle setting the Jets board on fire and everyone calling to fire Douglas and Salah?

Just Douglas.

Saleh gets 4 weeks before the planes fly and the billboards go up.

We'd better pray that the Jets win, or the board will be decrying Wilson as a bust for failing to beat Darnold in his debut game.

All wilson has to do is not throw a pick 6 on his very 1st pass attempt and he is already better than darnold.
