Assume at least a point for confirmation bias on Lawrence. The assumption that Fields was higher is pure conjecture.

Indeed, just speculation (the author states so).  Based on Urban Meyer/Ohio State history.   Not that it matters.  They were always taking Trevor.  Zach can use it as motivation.

Look more like he thinks he’s still in Gainesville. Glory days I guess.

He is just lost in his own shadow.  He thought that the rest of the NFL would like to know how their prospects were rated by Urban the Great.  The rest of the NFL knows it only adds fuel to the fire when your team must play those guys.

Parcells warned his players not to add fuel to the fire or leak information to the press.  Putting stuff on the bulletin board was a one-way ticket to the bench.

What’s even more puzzling is that they took etienne over moore to play etienne at wr even though they had etienne at 7.0 and moore at 6.9.  Why not take the pure wr if that’s where you’re going to play him?

In that case I would pass on Moore for Etienne since he is already in sync with Trevor. I'm not going to grill them too much for picking between those two.

The real argument is why didnt they bolster their line with that pick.

6.5 is "boom or bust" yet 6.3-6.4 is "will be a starter in first 2 years". Frankly, I'd rather a starter in first two years over boom or bust guy.

Also, just a PSA. Don't assume the Jags scouts have any idea how to value and evaluate prospects. Not saying the Jets do, just saying I can draw up a chart too and put numbers next to a guy's name.

To be fair, the Jets punching some teams in the face and kicking the sh!t out of some sportswriters' articles this year will be a surprise to many.  I don't blame the Jags for being ignorant and having an old logo.  The Jets kicking the Chargers, Colts and Pats in the balls in 2009-2011 was surprising to a lot of people.  The same sh!t is coming again over the next 24 months.

i am not a Wilson homer or anything but i have to think the Jags had to put a substantially lower grade on Wilson than they put on Lawrence...can you imagine Lawrence at 8.0 and Wilson at 7.8? i assume that would cause at least some conversation none of them would be comfortable having considering the owner had his Lawrence jersey made already.

Why? A 8.0 is higher than a 7.8, so their pick should have been Lawrence.  What changes?   You have one prospect rated over another, you take him.  They did, theres no explaining required

as far as getting to those grades vs having those grades on the board....something that close would suggest to me that people in the building think the 2 players are comparable (notice all these grade categories have a spread of .2)...having a 8 vs a 7 means one player is clearly better then the other one.

i guess most teams would have Lawrence higher no matter what, but i am guessing the fact that they knew they were taking him plays into the grade both for him and Wilson.

think about it, u know u are taking the guy first overall, u want everyone in your building to think you are making the no brainer move, and to be fired up about it.

Simms has Wilson 1, Lawrence 2, and a gap between them...not saying he is right, but he is impartial for sure. There is some bias in this whole lawrence thing, has been from jump.

No, to me 8.0 - 7.9 means one is rated over the other just as a 8-7.  As long as one is rated over the other, thats who you go with.  Thats the reason you rate them numerically.

Theres also the possibility that as close as the rankings were, all in the building had it the same way making the choice unanimous.  Id bet that Khan got his Lawrence jersey after this son, the GM, talked him up and told his dad that Lawrence was the pick.  Hell all he had to do was turn on SC and he would know who the #1 pick was going to be

Lawrence has been the consensus #1 since his first start for Clemson.  But there were still a few that challenged that line of thinking.  Simms was just one.

Regardless, the draft is over and we had no shot at Lawrence so he's of no concern.  We drafted Wilson and he was the logical pick, wasnt a reach.  I'm just looking forward to seeing our guy hitting the field running.  Its going to get exciting around here soon.

Jaguars forget to blur out draft board, showing a WR with same grade as Trevor Lawrence

If you've ever watched any sort of behind-the-scenes video of a real NFL draft room, you've certainly seen the blurring of that team's draft board in the background, so as to not reveal what it thought of various other prospects.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, it seems, are balking at such convention.

In a team-produced series called "The Hunt," the Jaguars have given their fans a peek behind the curtain of how they put together a star-studded draft class that includes Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne and others.

One interesting element revealed in Episode 3: The NFL apparently made the Jaguars wait before they selected Lawrence with the first pick overall, and there's a pretty funny backstory to it.

But for the NFL draft junkies, there was more intrigue.

Right around the 6:51 mark of the video, we see Jags owner Shad Khan placing the Lawrence magnet next to the team's slot on the draft board. But if you really squint, you can see what all the magnet says — including his draft grade. (We circled the grade in red.)

Lawrence has a mark of 8.0. So what does that mean? We don't know exactly, mainly because different teams use different grading systems. But on a traditional scale, which often goes from 3.0 or 4.0 all the way up to a 9.0, his 8.0 grade would mean the Jaguars viewed Lawrence as a pretty special prospect.

Naturally — they selected him first overall, after all.

But here's the fascinating part: The Jaguars had at least one other 8.0 prospect on their board, and the one we know about isn't another quarterback.

Check out the whopper of a grade the team slapped on Alabama WR Jaylen Waddle, who went sixth overall to their downstate neighbors, the Miami Dolphins.

If your eyesight is lacking, that also is an 8.0 grade. That's a pretty big number for any player, much less one who missed more than half of his final season in college and who only started nine games total for the Crimson Tide. (Then again, Waddle was our No. 5 overall prospect, he went sixth, so it might not be that much of a stretch.)

Right below Waddle is his new teammate, Jaelan Phillips, who earned what looks to be a 7.5 — another robust grade for a player Miami drafted. The Jaguars and Dolphins meet in Week 6 in England, so it will be interesting to see how those players fare vs. Jacksonville.

But there's more ...

We also can stand to reason that the Jaguars did not view BYU's Zach Wilson — who went one pick after Lawrence, to the New York Jets — as being on quite the same level as the prospect they ended up drafting.

The Jaguars gave a 7.0 draft grade to BYU QB Zach Wilson, who was taken one pick after Trevor Lawrence. (Jaguars on Youtube)

A 7.0 for Wilson is nothing to sneeze at — we'll provide context in a second — but it's clear that Jaguars were not tempted at all by Wilson. Based on information we gathered during the pre- and post-draft process, it's very likely that Ohio State's Justin Fields was QB2 on the Jags' board. (They didn't reveal Fields' grade, sadly.)

Wilson can use this "slight" as motivation when the Jets and Jaguars meet in Week 16. But check out USC OG Ali Vera-Tucker, the Jets' second first-round pick. No slight with AVT— he earned a 7.5, even higher than his new teammate Wilson, who went 12 picks earlier.

Wilson's grade, it turned out, was the same as the Jaguars' second first-round pick, RB Travis Etienne, who also is going to play some receiver for Urban Meyer's new team.

This picture is a bit more clear:

RBTravis Etienne earned a very respectable 7.0 draft grade from the Jaguars. (Jaguars on Youtube)

Oh, you thought that was it? We also got a peek at the grade of a player who will be trying to sack Lawrence two games a year for the next several seasons.

The Jaguars gave a 6.8 draft grade on Colts first-rounder Kwity Paye. (Jaguars on Youtube)

It appears that the Jaguars gave Indianapolis Colts first-round pass rusher a 6.8 grade. Again, without knowing the inner workings of the Jaguars' grading system, it's hard to say what this equates to — a low first-round pick? A second-rounder?

We just don't know. But typically, each whole number tends to represent a step down, projection-wise, which could mean the Jags likely wouldn't have selected him had Paye and Etienne both been on the board at the Jaguars' No. 25 overall sot.

Another player the Jaguars are sure to see a lot of (if he's healthy) is Titans CB Caleb Farley. His name briefly is revealed when the Jaguars took Georgia CB Tyson Campbell (whom we later see had a 6.9 grade).

Can anyone make out Farley's grade?

Caleb Farley's grade is a bit harder to make out. (Jaguars on Youtube)

Our eyes aren't what they used to be. But if we had to guess, that's a 7 followed by a 5.

The Jaguars also clearly liked Syracuse S Andre Cisco, whom they snagged at the top of Round 3. He earned a 6.9, a higher mark than the Jaguars' second second-rounder, Stanford OT Walker Little, who got a 6.8. We'd guess positional need factored into the Little pick, as it might have with the Jaguars' first fourth-round selection, USC DT Jay Tufele, who earned a 6.4.

The Jaguars had some solid grades on their third- and fourth-round selections, too. (Jaguars on Youtube)

We also caught glimpses of a few other teams' picks along the way.

Now, knowing all this information, we just need to figure out exactly what these numbers mean. We're sure the Jaguars will provide absolute clarity on this if we blow in a call to them.

I'm not getting your disagreement or point.

Yeah someone graded their board, I would assume its a group decision with the GM & HC having the biggest say. But they should all be in agreement so what's the worry

This is interesting. I’m not sure what scale they use but if it’s similar to the scale the Jets and others use, an 8.0 for Waddle is pretty insane, but it also leads me to believe their grading process wasn’t strict in year 1... usually grades are more technical with decimals to the hundredth and other flags/codes to label a player. Also, what often gets ignored is that many teams place a positional weight, hence the raw grade won’t necessarily be indicative where exactly they are on the final draft board.

Considering the weight, any grade over a 7.0 is elite for a QB. I think Jets grade for Wilson was over a 7.4– I’ve heard Wilson was given the 3rd highest grade for a QB Douglas ever evaluated. Seeing a 7.5 for AVT is impressive and I’d bet Jets grade was similar— they had him rated higher than Penei Sewell

Does anyone else have a feeling that JAX is going to be an absolute
trainwreck this year?

- Meyer hires that controversial strength coach who he immediately
fires

- His offensive coaches surrounding Lawrence are Darrell Bevell & Schotty

- They have a strong RB corps but draft Etienne then say he's going to
be a WR.  If you wanted a WR in the first round, draft one not a projection

- Now this leaking of the draft grades
