Popular Post Claymation
The Jets’ season begins in about three months, on Sept. 12 at the Panthers. Rookie Zach Wilson almost certainly will be the Jets’ starting quarterback in that game, against former Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. So Wilson needs to absorb as much as he can this spring. And that process continued Tuesday, when the Jets were back on the field for an organized team activities practice. Reporters haven’t been allowed to watch every Jets practice this spring. Just half of them so far (four of eight). And Tuesday’s practice was the best Wilson has looked — at least in the open practices. He had an all-around strong showing. A positive sign for him The Jets are now in their third week of spring practices, which include 10 OTAs sessions and a three-day, mandatory minicamp (next Tuesday through Thursday). After that minicamp, the Jets are off until training camp starts on July 27. Tuesday marked the Jets’ eighth OTAs practice, and the fourth that was open to reporters. The Jets are scheduled to practice again Thursday (open to reporters) and Friday (closed). The entire minicamp is open. So reporters will get to see Wilson eight times this spring, out of 13 total practices. All of these practices are no-pads, no-contact workouts — OTAs and minicamp alike. So they aren’t particularly intense. Bottom line: Don’t read too much into spring practices. And here’s how Wilson looked Tuesday, at open practice No. 4: The numbers: In 11-on-11 team periods, Wilson got 13 reps and completed 9 of 11 passes. In 7-on-7 drills, he got 16 reps and was 8-of-15 passing. He didn’t throw any interceptions, though he did have one near interception in 7-on-7s that inside linebacker Jarrad Davis dropped. And on Wilson’s nine total incomplete passes, one was a throwaway and five were drops (three by tight end Tyler Kroft, one by tight end Ryan Griffin, and one by receiver Denzel Mims). What went well: Wilson had a couple absolutely nasty throws on Tuesday. One came on his first team periods rep. It was a perfect, 40-yard spiral that Elijah Moore laid out to catch — great throw and grab. We haven’t really seen Wilson air the ball out all that much in the spring. But he sure did it here. He also continued to show off his quick release on shorter throws, particularly when under pressure. Even though it wasn’t a deep shot, Wilson had perhaps a more skilled throw — about 20 yards toward the sideline — later in practice, in another segment of team periods. He dropped the ball in over double coverage and found Keelan Cole, who has been developing a nice rapport with Wilson this spring. This was an eyebrow-raising throw after which you wondered just how in the world Wilson was able to thread the pass through — and arc it over — coverage. Wilson’s third elite throw of Tuesday’s practice came in his final segment of team periods. He throw across his body and hit Braxton Berrios over the middle, again through tight coverage. A really nice day for Wilson all-round, from quick decision making to tight throws. What went not so well: Wilson did throw that near interception. Not ideal. Davis should’ve had that. It went right to him. Wilson also had two overthrows on deep balls, but not a major issue there. That stuff happens. Other than the two overthrows and the one near interception, all of Wilson’s other incomplete passes were drops (five) and the one throwaway. Kroft had an especially awful day. He dropped back-to-back passes in the end zone during a 7-on-7 red zone period. Three total drops — and all on relatively easy catches — on Tuesday for the Rutgers alum. Final analysis: This was a positive day for Wilson, and he needs to keep stacking practices like this and building on them. Again, take stuff that happens in the spring with a grain of salt. But as we keep noting: It’s a good sign that Wilson at least doesn’t look lost. That would be a concern, even at this stage, since he’s going to start in 2021, likely in Week 1. So yeah, he doesn’t look lost. And at times, like Tuesday, he looks like he could be special. It’s extremely early in this process. So making sweeping declarations about his chances of thriving in the NFL is just dumb. Let’s see how things play out during training camp and this season. Remember, Wilson still doesn’t have an elite supporting cast around him. That could be a significant factor working against him in 2021. But this spring is giving him a chance to gain familiarity with lower-profile targets like Berrios and Cole, since Jamison Crowder hasn’t been around and Corey Davis is nursing a shoulder injury. https://www.nj.com/jets/2021/06/jets-zach-wilson-excels-at-best-open-practice-so-far-otas-observations-takeaways.html 7

He's said about ten times that Wilson is holding the ball way to long. Nearly all the other scribs have been talking about how quick the ball is coming out on short routes. It's not an accident both Manish Mehta and Rich Cimni worked for the NYDN.
