It’s like being a Jets Fan

Those days are hopefully over.

I am a lifelong Chelsea fan and Eden Hazard was one of our best players for many years.  I was upset when he signed with Real Madrid for 115M Euros ($137 Million).... But man what a disaster that was

Spain vs. Sweden was a real sleeper.

Obviously happy with the England win over Croatia but that Croatia team got really old in the last 3 years and even so it was only a 1-0 win.  Overall it sets up as a pretty weak group so the football Gods have been kind to the English this time around,  Playing at home, etc.  Now just don't screw it up against the Scots on Friday!

France vs. Germany is intriguing today.  It seems like a less important game than it would have been in decades past but never put it past the Germans to show up on the biggest of stages.

England is loaded.  But as you know, they've been loaded before and come up way short.  I really like your new, young right winger, Foden.  Kid looks dangerous.  And you just can't lose to Scotland.  That would be an embarrassment.

Yeah, am really looking forward to the France-Germany match.  As an Italy fan, I despise Germany, even though they always field a great squad..  Hope France destroys them.

Here's an update from Eriksen.

The English defense and goalkeeper are dodgy at best.  I fear that this will be their undoing here.  I agree on Foden and you can add Mount to the "exceptional talents" list.

Great start for Italy but it will not be clear for a game or two if Turkey are simply an easy mark or if the Italian team are a real threat to win it all.  Nevertheless a 3-0 win again anybody is a really good result.

After the debacle of missing the last World Cup, they have a lot to prove.  Right now, gun to my head?  I don't think they are one of the elite teams.  I'd be happy if they got to the quarters.

Nice effort by Hungary.  But Portugal prevails.  Ronny gets two, one off a PK the other a gorgeous dribble move.

And if no offsides decision a few minutes before then who knows what happens.  Portugal looked pretty ordinary for 80+ minutes.  Still, a win is a win.  Tough group.

The nullified goal by Hungary was an electric moment for that nation.   Just a step and a half off.   Too bad.  Agree that Portugal looked pedestrian today.  I don't see them winning the tournament.

Gorgeous play/goal between Mbappé and Benzima nullified as Mbappé was a half step off.   France wins 1-0.

Mbappé is such an impressive player.  As the announcer said on TV, he ran passed German defender Hummels like he had a piano on his back.

So much talent and skill on both France and Germany.  Bad/unlucky position own goal by Hummels puts France up 1-0.

Germany never really looked that dangerous whereas France always seemed like they had another gear. Maybe France, Germany and Portugal all advance.  In any event only losing by 1-0 against France is not the worst result in the world if you are Germany.

You're right, France were the better team today.  I wish France had used runs by Griezmann more.  Yeah, I could see all three advancing.   Brutal group.

I feel bad for native North Americans.  All the sports where they compete there really is no competition in the outside world.  Baseball (American)Football, Basketball, you name it. North America is it and so the fans of these sports never discover the highest heights of a world cup or the lowest lows.

The Olympics is the closest thing but not in a sport that the US is passionate about.  Soccer a few years back when the US was borderline competitive but otherwise nothing.

For countries where soccer is a national legacy winning the world cup is the Superbowl of Superbowls and if you are considered a top tier team then not qualifying for the tournament itself is considered a national disgrace which they will still be talking about decades from now.  I know because it happened to England in 1974 to our eternal shame.

Unless you're an immigrant or have some other connection (family member, etc), the passion soccer fans feel for their national teams does not resonate at all in America.  My father often talked about the triumphs and disasters of the Italian team.   How the team/coaches could not come back to Italy for weeks/months after a couple catastrophes. lol

Imagine if the world played American football and we competed?  The madness we see for NFL games would be magnified by a factor of a thousand.  That would be a blast.

I think both France and Germany managed to be disappointing. It was a fun game but very sloppy. Mbappe running by Hummels was something else though, like a Ferrari rounding a tractor. Germany's end product was just abysmal. Kroos especially was god awful when he had opportunities to deliver balls into the box.

Ronaldo just keeps being impossible. Portugal made tough work of it but they deserved the win. With Bruno and Ronaldo they'll always be dangerous but they have never quite got the best out of all that talent. Sucks for them that Ronaldo played with garbage for 12 years between two golden generations.

Italy and Belgium have probably been the most impressive to this point but France will still be the favourites with that squad. Wide open tournament though.

Italia up 1-0 at half on a defensive error.    Not a particularly great game.  The Swiss don't look too intimidating, with Shaqiri a step slower perhaps?  And the Italians lack a true cannoniere.

EDIT:  Nice shot by Locatelli on the second goal.  2-0

EDIT:  Goal, Immobile.  3-0

Looks like Italy advances.  Bravi

Really impressive from Italy. Always had a soft spot for them because I loved Serie A growing up. Even when they're good they're not normally so dominant. They've sort of gone under the radar and could be a serious contender.

England-Scotland tomorrow which should be unbearable to listen to. Bad enough I had to listen to Robbie Savage commentate on Wales games.

That performance from Italy just got them into the top-4 from the Vegas oddsmakers (+750).

"Happy just to make the quarters" is out of the window now.  The team looks very strong through two games.  Great Job!

I'm as surprised as anyone with how they've played.  So far, Mancini has made all the right moves.  Hoping we have found a scorer in Locatelli.  Guess it's 'cause I'm a Jet fan, but I keep waiting for it to fall apart.  lol

Thanks, guys.  Good luck with England today.

It just gets worse and worse. Savage, Hartson, Jenas, Robot Wars, Canning and Alkin on RTE. The only small mercy is Sky don't have any rights so we haven't had Martin Tyler doing his heavy breathing over everything.

The channels were so quick to offer the option of listening to fake crowd noise or actual sounds, when stadiums were empty, why can't they offer us the option of commentary or no commentary too?

Nice goal by Denmark, especially with Eriksen still in the hospital watching.  Hope they hold on for a win today.  But Lukaku is deadly.

@EM31 No way do I believe Italy is 70% to win the tournament.   That's ridiculous.

And I had no idea you guys were so down on all the commentators.  What's that history?

Also, sorry for saying England-Scotland was today.  It's tomorrow.

Just read that Eriksen will need an implanted defibrillator.

He will receive an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a small electronic device that is a type of pacemaker and can prevent fatal cardiac arrests by discharging a jolt to restore a regular heart rhythm.

"After Christian has been through different heart examinations, it has been decided that he should have an ICD," doctor Morten Boesen said in a statement. "This device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances.

"Christian has accepted the solution and the plan has moreover been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment."

Netherlands defender Daley Blind still plays professionally, for Ajax, with an ICD. He had one fitted after being diagnosed with an inflamed heart muscle in 2019.

Italian FA rules bar players from playing with internal defibrillators, so Eriksen would need special dispensation to return to Inter.

Denmark and Belgium players have halted their European Championship match for a stadium-wide minute’s applause for Christian Eriksen.

Play was stopped after the clock hit 10 minutes to start the tribute. It was a pre-planned action to honor Eriksen. The midfielder wears the No. 10 shirt for Denmark’s national team.

Eriksen is recovering in a nearby hospital after suffering cardiac arrest during Denmark’s first game against Finland at Euro 2020. The hospital is close enough to Parken Stadium that Eriksen was expected to hear the tribute from his room.

Gorgeous play & goal by Price Harry look-a-like De Bruyne.    Man, Belgium is loaded with skill players.  They always seem to be well prepared tactically and look incredible on the counter attack.   Would not surprise me if they win it all.

That generation of Belgian players need to win one of these things or it will be viewed as a golden opportunity that got away.

Absolutely.  You don't find a group of players of that caliber very often.   From top to bottom, they look like an all-star team.

Several great chances in the first half which England failed to convert.  After that, Scotland hung on and came out with a point.  I'm sure you England fans are disappointed with the 0-0 result.  You were the better team, especially in the first half.

Someone tell Deschamps to take Benzema off the friggin' field.  And where are the runs by Griezmann?

France is stunned on a late goal by Hungary after having 99% of the ball in the first half.  Defender decides not to make a tackle and the keeper is out of position.   Awful.

France is kinda my "second" team as my Mom was born in France.  Always  fun in my house when they would play each other.  My Mom would chide my Dad mercilessly. lol
