Tamorrion Terry indicted on a charge of felony murder in Georgia

The indictment handed down on June 22 relates to a nightclub shooting that occurred in Ashburn, Georgia, during the early hours of Saturday, June 30. The charge of felony murder is applicable as a death occurred, even if by accident, in the commission of a felony.

A total of seven people were reported to have been hurt in the incident, with 21-year-old Za’quavia Smith the lone fatality. The shooting occurred at Studio 2.0 nightclub on W. Washington Avenue. One of those named in the indictment, Jontavious Coley was arrested and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. However, Coley was not believed to have acted alone at the time, but further names were not known until the indictment on June 22.

Terry grew up in Turner County before attending FSU

Terry attended Turner County High School in Ashburn, Georgia, where he was a three-star recruit per 24/7 Sports. He impressed in his senior season, earning Offensive Player of the Year honors. He was offered a scholarship by the Georgia Bulldogs before committing to the FSU Seminoles in early 2017. After redshirting his first year in Tallahassee, Terry would go on to start in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

The incident that the indictment relates to occurred prior to Terry’s redshirt-freshman year in 2018. The story regarding Terry’s indictment was first reported on July 1, 2021, by Adam Beasley, the new PFN NFL Insider who is finishing up his last week at the Miami Herald.

Terry’s college career at FSU

Across his three years at FSU, Terry started 31 games. During that time, he had a total of 118 receptions, with 2,221 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. Terry was expected to enter the 2020 NFL Draft but decided to return for his redshirt-senior season in 2020.

After racking up 95 receptions for 1,932 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first two seasons, Terry struggled to make the same impact in his redshirt-junior season. A 23-reception, 289-receiving-yard season (with just 1 touchdown) led to Terry going undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Terry was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seahawks on May 14. His release came on June 30, 2021.

Let's just be clear. "Felony murder" can include everything from "drove the car used in a drive by" to "was present with a group of kids who shoplifted a few grand in merchandise and one got killed by police trying to get away". This is obviously awful, but get some details before you start throwing this kid in the Rae Carruth/Aaron Hernandez bucket

That’s why I didn’t say nothing yet.

I knew he had to be a crackhead or something when I read they released him.  I mean he couldn't be a regular jackass they have Adams and Metcalf on the team.

Let's pray it's the good felony murder. lol

Heh.

From what I'm reading, sounds like he was in a gang in high school, there was some beef at a nightclub, and someone fired into a crowd. Which is pretty damn evil, but whether he was shooting or just present/swinging at someone makes a huge difference in the moral judgment. At least for me, anyway.

I know nothing about this case or this player but I will say the Felony murder law is one of those laws that started with a good purpose but has created some unintended consequences. There have been cases where 3 guys rob a bank and when driving away from the scene, they crash into a light pole and one of the robbers dies. The other 2 are then charged with his murder. I don't have any sympathy for criminals but is that appropriate? Not so sure...
