Pro Football Focus recently re-graded each team’s 2020 NFL Draft class after the players' first season. PFF gave the Jets a B+- after last year's draft and gave them an A in the re-grade.

"While the Jets' Day 2 picks from 2020 are still largely to be determined, Mekhi Becton is already a force at left tackle after posting a 76.0 pass-blocking grade as a rookie," Michael Renner wrote. "The wild card here is [CB] Bryce Hall, who is a perfect scheme fit for Robert Saleh's defense and made some plays down the stretch last season."

The Jets selected nine players last year including Becton (Rd 1) and Hall (Rd 5). The other seven are WR Denzel Mims (Rd 2), S Ashtyn Davis (Rd 3), DL Jabari Zuniga (Rd 3), RB La'Mical Perine (Rd 4), QB James Morgan (Rd 4), OL Cameron Clark (Rd 4) and P Braden Mann (Rd 6).

The Jets draft class can be broken up into parts: Players who flashed, the ones who battled injuries and the de facto redshirts.

Becton, Mims, Hall and Mann all flashed throughout the season. Becton started at left tackle for the Green & White from Day 1, taking 691 snaps and starting 13 games as a rookie while emerging as a young foundational piece. Mims, who missed the first half of the season with a hamstring injury, flashed down the stretch and had at least 40 receiving yards in each of his first six games.

Hall started in seven of the eight games he played in after missing training camp and the first half of the season as he recovered from a leg injury he sustained in his final year at Virginia. Mann started all 16 games, took on kickoff duties midway through the season and made a game-saving tackle that all but ensured the Jets' first win of the season. He averaged 43.9 yds/punt with a long of 60.

Davis, Perine and Zuniga also showed flashes, but they couldn't stay on the field. Davis started six games, and Perine played in 10 games. Zuniga missed all of training camp and the first half of the season before playing in eight games and registering 5 tackles.

Lastly, both Cameron Clark (Charlotte) and James Morgan (Florida Atlantic), the two picks from the smallest schools of the draft class, have yet to take an NFL snap.

That's a very generous grade.  Pretty much every pick still has a ton to prove.  Becton is the only player who somewhat established himself, and even he has some questions about durability.

The only one who truly proved himself is Mann.

Do you think it deserves an A?

A to me means top of the class good, great job, many great picks and pretty well no suspect picks.

Do I think it deserves an A? No, honestly, probably not. But the number of drafts that have, “pretty well no suspect picks,” is probably well less than 5%, especially when you’re talking about a full seven pick or more draft. I suspect most GMs would be happy to be right half the time.

What's a "A" draft? Two starters? One? How many players seeing what % of snaps - which covers injuries as well as gameworthiness? I wonder how those numbers compare to those of other teams? Not giving JD a pass/automatic "A", but how many other GM's did better or worse?

Well the Jets have 3 starters in Becton, Hall And Mims plus a full time contributor at punter with Mann. The story hasn't been written about Davis, Zuniga & Perine. Arizona had a A+ just after the draft and Isaiah Simmons looked awful and Josh Jones couldn't start.

Bills draft was poor headed by Epenesa and they received a A-, Denver received an A+ and they got squat from Cushenberry, Hamler, Ojemudia. The Jets did well, and I expect some of these players to make a leap this year.

“…..showed flashes….”

This catch all statement/ verbal crutch is annoying. It absolves the person making the statement from having to say what they need to realized their potential.

How do we get from flashes to full power illumination?

Being able to flash is a prerequisite to be on a 53-man NFL roster. All of them can flash.

4 D'Brickashaw Ferguson Offensive tackle Virginia
29 Nick Mangold Center Ohio State
2 49 Kellen Clemens Quarterback Oregon
3 76 Anthony Schlegel Linebacker Ohio State
97 Eric Smith Safety Michigan State
4 103 Brad Smith Wide receiver Missouri
117 Leon Washington Running back Florida State
5 150 Jason Pociask Tight end Wisconsin
6 189 Drew Coleman Cornerback TCU
7 220 Titus Adams Defensive tackle Nebraska

This was an A draft.  D'Brick and Magold, Clemens who had a long carrer, Eric Smith who started for years, Brad Smith who was the best gadget/special teamer player in the league for a stretch, Leon Washington who excelled at RB and returner, and Coleman who was a spot starter and depth player for years.  That's an A draft.  You follow it up next year with Darrelle Revis and David Harris and you've got some great building blocks. Then of course comes 2008.

2008 NFL Draft[edit]

RD Pick Player name Position College
1 6 Vernon Gholston Defensive end Ohio State
30 Dustin Keller Tight end Purdue
4 113 Dwight Lowery Cornerback San José State
5 162 Erik Ainge Quarterback Tennessee
6 171 Marcus Henry Wide receiver Kansas
7 211 Nate Garner Offensive tackle Arkansas

Add that we traded away Jonathan Vilma for a 4th Rd. pick, spent a 3rd and 5th on oft-injured Kris Jenkins, and 4th rounder for one-year rental Brett Favre (after releasing Pennington who would go on to beat Favre and make the Playoffs), and I'd call that an F.  Last year is shaping up to be a c+ to a B+ if some of the picks develop into contributors.
