Jamal Adams contract: Seattle Seahawks committed to extension

ByBRAD CRAWFORD Jul 4, 10:28 AM

The Seattle Seahawks know safety Jamal Adams has leverage in the negotiating process and are crawling toward a contract extension approaching the 2021 season, according to ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler provided an update this week on Seattle, who is still waiting for one of its top defenders to show up as the contract situation intensifies.

"The Seahawks are committed to getting this done, but I'm told it has been a bit slow going," Fowler said during Sunday's appearance on SportsCenter. "And so, this is a situation that could bleed through training camp, even possibly close to Week 1. It's complicated because Jamal Adams has the leverage, he knows the team gave up two first-round picks to get him and he's trying to reset the safety market in a big way.

"Now, I'm not saying he's holding out. But this is a player who got his way out of New York over his contract. The Seahawks at least know they're dealing with a hard bargainer, somebody who's willing to bet on himself. So watch out for some fireworks here."

Adams is regarded as one of the top defensive backs in the NFL and his contract will speak to his worth. The former first-round pick played three season with the New York Jets before he was dealt to the Seahawks last July.

Adams played 12 games last season while he battled a groin injury and made his presence felt with 83 tackles and 9.5 sacks, the most by any defensive back since the NFL began tracking the stat in 1982. He was named to his third straight Pro Bowl and was Second Team All-Pro for the second time in his career.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll spoke last month on Adams' contract situation.

It’s been ongoing and it's been amicable throughout,” Carroll said, according to ESPN. “We recognize that he’s a fantastic football player and ... it’s a big contract process. But I know he knows he’s been treated with a lot of respect and he’s been very respectful towards the club as well. They’ve been good talks. It just hasn’t been able to get settled at this point, but it’s coming. We expect him for [training] camp, and everything should be fine.”

ESPN's Jeff Darlington previously reported the Seahawks had "no choice" but to give Adams what he wants, unless they are willing to "rent" the elite-level defender in hopes of of a mega trade down the line.

NFL training camp opens on July 27 and Seattle expects their starting safety to show up.

100% Seattle's fault.  If im jamal, im never playing for the seahawks again until im the highest paid safety in the league.

Seattle knew what Adams was going to require.  They cant play dumb now.

If that was all he wanted, he'd have been signed by now.  Hell, he might still be a Jet if that was all he wanted.

The problem is he wants to be paid like one of the game's highest-paid defenders.  I.E. he wants about $20M per year, with his "settling price" at about $18M per.  Merely the $15.3M per that would be all that is currently required to make him the highest paid Safety will not cut it at all.  He's looking at the game's highest-paid EDGE rushers and thinks he's somewhere in the middle of that company:

Myles Garrett Browns 26 $125,000,000 $25,000,000 $100,000,000 $50,000,000 2027 UFA
Khalil Mack Bears 30 $141,000,000 $23,500,000 $90,000,000 $60,000,000 2025 Void
Demarcus Lawrence Cowboys 29 $105,000,000 $21,000,000 $65,000,000 $48,000,000 2024 Void
Frank Clark Chiefs 28 $104,000,000 $20,800,000 $62,305,000 $43,805,000 2024 UFA
Von Miller Broncos 32 $114,500,000 $19,083,333 $70,000,000 $42,000,000 2022 UFA
Trey Flowers Lions 28 $90,000,000 $18,000,000 $56,000,000 $50,000,000 2024 UFA

Arik Armstead 49ers 28 $85,000,000 $17,000,000 $45,850,000 $34,150,000 2025 Void
Shaquil Barrett Buccaneers 29 $68,000,000 $17,000,000 $34,500,000 $34,500,000 2025 Void

But yes, its 100 % Seattle's fault that they are in this predicament.

Okay.

Another way to put it is that he's a complete doosh who nicknamed himself The President - his trade has brought me nothing but joy.

We should troll him on Twitter reminding him that Leonard Williams is getting $21M/year from the Giants.

Without a deal in place how can they hope for a mega trade down the line?
