Report: Jets not expected to reach deal with Maye

Recommended Posts

maye's a good player and it would be good for the jets to lock him up but at what cost?  the thing that's being a little ignored is in spite of maye the team only got to 7 wins once and most times were down in the 4 wins range.  that kind of doesn't say maye is indispensable.  the jets shouldn't overpay for his services.

Rap's source is clearly Maye's agent, so you can take a pinch of salt with the figures quoted.

This was always likely to happen. Maye is a very good player, but not an elite one. He deserves a fair contract, but in no way does he deserve a top of the market deal.

It looks like the Jets are happy to let Maye prove it again this year. They are not going to offer a market-setting deal for a 28 year old player they can control with the franchise tag this year and potentially next.

Ian tweeted about how other teams approached Maye’s camp and made significantly better offers.  Tampering charges incoming?  I’m sure those teams will be thrilled with Erik Burkhardt blowing up their spot.

JD has made some solid moves as of late....

But do we really gotta nickel and dime another guy?

How do you know JD didn’t make a fair offer? Maye, like Adams, could very well be asking for unreasonable money at a non-premium position.

Maye is a transition girl. Good for the moment, but not part of the long term plan. They'll get what they can out of him, he'll get paid charmingly, and both parties will move on next year. They aren't going to load up a contract at safety knowing they'll have to pay other more important players soon enough, unless it's a team friendly contract. Safety is a short term mercenary position not a corner stone build around position.

I tend to agree.

But then don’t make stupid statements like how they’re going to relentlessly try to sign him.

Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Douglas could still tag Maye next year too. Ball would be in his court if he wants to hold out at that point. I don’t think he’s gonna hold out now.

He’s likely looking for 13-14 per. He gets 11 this year. Franchise him again next off season. The two franchise tags will still average less than his current contract demands. See if Ashtyn develops.

Maye will be 29 next off season. betting on yourself is a tough thing to do at his age. Sucks to be 24 your rookie year.

Politics, a game which all employers and employees play. They might be trying to trade him. You reduce the value of any position you have by telling the world "next year he'll be a FA". Maybe there is another sucker team out there that thinks they're a safety away this year.

Franchise maye this year.  Then send him a lowball offer you know he will never take.  Its not our fault he is not signing it.

Textbook GMing by Joe Douglas.  And if maye has a pro bowl season this year, he will get tagged again and another lowball offer will be coming his way.

All while we have the next 2 drafts to find his replacement.

Thank you Joe Douglas!  Thank you!!
