Would Y’all be Open to a KJ Wright signing?

Veteran linebacker KJ Wright has spent the last 10 years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks, yet in late July remains unsigned.

There are several teams that are vying for his services, although most of them have waited until training camp to make a decision on whether or not to bring him in.

The thought process is simple. Coaches would prefer to fill their roster and specifically their starting positions with youngsters. Why?

It’s cheap labor and a player can get reps and develop into a more prominent role down the line. While a veteran is commonly more expensive.

In the Jets’ case, they have young players at two positions of need (linebacker and cornerback). Both areas lack depth and star power.

Wright could add both to the linebacker room for the green and white.

In a recent NFL.com article, Kevin Patra explored the potential landing spots for the veteran and one of the teams that came up was the Jets.

Since Wright has only played for one team his entire NFL career, the columnist suggested reuniting with a former Seattle coach in a new location would make a ton of sense.

Saleh, the Jets’ head coach, was with the Seahawks from 2011 through 2013 as a defensive quality control coach. That perfectly aligned with Wright’s tenure as a player who coincidentally started his career at the same time as a former fourth-round draft choice (No. 99 overall) in the 2011 NFL draft by Seattle.

In Saleh’s final year with the Seahawks, he punctuated his tenure with football immortality. Seattle won Super Bowl 48 with a 43-8 beatdown of Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

Two of the three linebacker spots in the Jets’ new 4-3 scheme are accounted for with CJ Mosley and Jarrad Davis expected to take starting gigs. That leaves one potential opening up for grabs.

To add a piece this late in the process that has the versatility to play every linebacker spot (SAM, MIKE, and WILL) is invaluable. The NFL is a brutal game and injuries are to be expected.

With no proven depth on the bench, it would behoove Gang Green to add some much-needed insurance. Wright has versatility, leadership having been around the block a time or two, and knowledge of the scheme.

With only a month and a half before the 2021 season arrives, if the Jets are going to sign a veteran like Wright, time is of the essence. The sooner they can get a player in the building, the better prepared they’ll be both mentally and physically for the challenges ahead.

The 31-year old (soon to be 32-year old) would be a perfect scheme fit for what the Jets are looking for. If Wright is weighing his options on where he wants to play next season, his close connection with Saleh could push him over the edge to join the green and white.

If only to provide veteran leadership at the veteran minimum to the young locker room and the Hybrids we drafted in the 5th & 6th round; his familiarity with the defensive scheme could help mentor and accelerate the learning curve for the developmental SS/OLBs - Auburn and FSU SSs just drafted.

Why not!  I think it would be great to get him in on a 1 year deal, and see how he can help this team.

Yes

Mosley is damn near an unknown after essentially two years away, Davis has been a bust during his time in Detroit, Cashman is made of glass and Hamsah and Sherwood are late round rookies.

The Jets have plenty of cap space and draft resources for the foreseeable future, especially over the next two years.

Instead of signing a CB I’d let the young guys like Hall, Austin, Dunn, Carter, etc have at it and trade one of our three 6th rounders for something like Foles and a 5th (Bears need the cap relief, if I’m not mistaken), and bring in a dude like Wright who has always been steady and knows the defense.

I'm done with the whole idea of vet mentor.  I say let the coaches coach and save the roster spots for possible untapped potential types players.

Yes. Been saying this for years... why do we think EVERY postion requires a veteran mentor. That's why there are 100 coaches.

a veteran presence (at minimum cost & commitment in Jets’ scenario) is necessary for a young locker room to remain professional for 17 games, ESPECIALLY with a new HC and if the winning doesn’t materialize as the season progresses.

I agree with the Parcells mantra of having vets set the tone and culture in the locker room.

No thnx you.

He was absolutely atrocious in pass coverage for Seattle last year and we need speed on D and Hamsah Nasirildeen is going to ball out @ OLB within our 4-3 while playing alongside of Mosley and opposite of Davis.

Wright 2020: Targeted 66 times and allowed 51 completions (77.3%), allowed 416 passing yards against, missed on 10 tackles with 267 yards after catch given up, 4 TDs allowed with only 1 INT and an awful pass coverage rating of 106.6 (only 2 sacks despite 76 blitz attempts).

You think Jamal Adams and his 104.7 pass coverage rating was bad? K.J. Wright is even worse in pass coverage and is completely washed up at 31-32 years old.

 Heck no.

No.  Mosley and Davis are vets.  It's probably the 1 position group on the entire team where we have 2 veterans to play.

I'd much rather see them go spend on a veteran CB then a washed up LB'er.  Besides, I think after Davis, Cashman can play that role if healthy.

KJ is a very good player. If all he costs is $ (no picks) and it's a 1-2 yr rental, I would strongly consider. Not as mentor, he would be a quality starter.

No he wouldn't be a quality starter. He's worse than Jamal Adams in pass coverage but has zero pass rushing ability.

They didn't sign Davis to give up on him in July.

They are likely going to wait and see how these guys play in camp and if they don't like what they see, then sure, Wright is a solid option.

Ouch!!  I guess we must pass on him.  Have a nice retirement.

If the Jets are content going into the season with a QB room that has zero QBs with an NFL completion, why in hell would they want to add a 31 year old LBer?  They drafted two kids who they plan on converting to LBer, Wright offers little to nothing to aid in their development.

I don't  think you sign Wright for his man coverage skills. He has never been the kind of LBer.

Well in a 4-3 Defense your two outside LBs must be really good in pass coverage (see Lavonte. David of the Buccaneers for example). 3-4 OLBs are pass rushing specialists but 4-3 OLBs must have some type of pass coverage ability and K.J. Wright is completely shot @ 31-32 years old.

Now Kwon Alexander former Buccaneer @ only 26 would be an awesome addition because he's an OLB within a 4-3 base defense with MLB experience too.

However he's got an appointment scheduled with the Saints and I don't think he'll leave their facility without a contract.

On the opposite end of the spectrum I'm just really fired up about Hamsah Nasirildeen out of FSU getting an opportunity to start I believe he's going to absolutely feast.

Just like Rex with Bart Scott and Jim Leonard. Saleh knows the player firsthand, KJ knows the defense and what his role would be. Forget the stats, last year in Seattle was an aberration.

This I wouldn’t mind Kwon has had some great years...but he’s prob heading elsewhere

If 2 of the 3 spots are accounted for that means you're signing KJ to the money he's asking to bring him in for a position that will see the field MAYBE 30% of snaps, while simultaneously keeping Nas and the other young hybrid off the field. I'd pass on that and rather have the young guys on the field. If Mosley or Davis get hurt than it's a much different scenario. I wouldn't be pissed if they signed him, but it's not something I'm looking for. Same thing with an older vet at corner. I'd rather sink or swim with the young guys and continue building for the future.

The young guys are ALL going to play significant time this year. This is a year of getting these guys game experience and bringing in old veteran players is just going to slow their development. They're going to let this defense grow together like Seattle and SF did instead of trying to patchwork a defense. Everything they do is with an eye towards the future and a veteran signing at this stage goes against what they're trying to build on defense.

I wouldn’t mind but I think Mosley is going to have a GREAT year.

Mosley is a beast. And he’s super fresh since he hasn’t played in 2 years.  He’s had time to recuperate from his injury and he’s just got to be chomping at the bit. Comeback player of the year. Or would he be Comeback/Comeback player of the year since he’s practically missed the last 2 years. ?

lol thnx man and sorry for the rocky start here on JN I love our throwback and legendary Jets fans from our Namath and Maynard days and I felt guilty going @ it with you the other day welcome to JN and I'm looking forward to learning more about the game of Football and your All-Time favorite Jets.

In the 1990's when my grandfather would dust off his old VCR games my 3 favorite Jets while watching games with him on Saturdays were LB Larry Grantham, DE Gerry Philbin and LB Al Atkinson; what did you think of those guys during their prime years man?

Rain water off a duck’s back. Philbin and Grantham and Atkinson were the guts of the 68-69 SB defense. That is the best defense in Jets history. The AFL had amazing defenses back then characterized by incredible LB’s. We had the best in ‘68. And Philbin was Da Man. Jack Youngblood, one of my favorite players of all time, was a modern version of Philbin. Just relentless. They checked back and surmised that Philbin had 19 sacks in ‘68 on a 14 game schedule. He was a monster. And Atkinson had 21 interceptions in his career. That’s impressive. And Grantham is the Jets all time LB. The Jets in 68 were way more than just Joe Namath. Way more.

Wow man thnx you for that and my grandfather always told me the same how Namath stole the spotlight (still his favorite Player) but the Jets as a team were outstanding. Grantham is why I selected username DWC he was my favorite player when watching those games with my hero.

PS; My Grandfather passed away at a really young age because he smoked cigars and cigirates lung cancer and also a bad heart from all the smoke because if not? He'd still be here and probably on JN in his 70's with another 37 years to go ? thnx you for your throwback Jets knowledge and I look forward to you celebrating again even if it's 2050 you'll still be around champ!

My condolences to your grandfather. Obviously he was a special guy and you were very close. That’s what it’s all about. Life is a gift and so I quit the extra curricular activities close to 28 years ago and quit smoking 20 years ago. Smoking is a bitch to quit. Hardest thing I ever did but the next best thing I ever did for myself. I rarely get colds. I used to be sick ALL the time with walking pneumonia 3-4 times a year. Was pretty close to kicking it in my early 40’s. But God is great and I was able to beat it. Faith is a many-splendored thing. I’m in pretty good shape. Some minor health issues but knock on wood they are being monitored and aren’t alarming right now. Look forward to numerous more Knicks, Mets, Jets Championships. Winning it all is really quite surreal.
