Here’s how Gang Green can Get Wilson Deal Done ASAP and Avoid Future Headaches With Premium Picks

New York Jets training camp is under way in Florham Park, New Jersey and the story of the day will be the absence of first-round pick Zach Wilson.  The quarterback out of BYU is represented by the same agent who had Joey Bosa hold out for a month when he was drafted by the San Diego Chargers just a few years ago so this should come as no surprise.

As was the case with Bosa, the issue is offset language in the contract that would allow Wilson to collect a hefty sum if his time in New York doesn’t pick up his fifth-year option.

The Jets are reportedly hesitant to give in because they want to avoid setting a precedent for future picks who may look for the same structure from the club.

With this being the case, why not give Wilson what he wants before this drags out and becomes an public embarassment and a detriment to the team, while explaining that this is a practice the team will only engage in for players who:

  1. Play the most important position in all of professional sports; and
  2. Are drafted in the first round

It’s that simple.  Nobody who pays attention to the sport is unaware of the fact that quarterbacks are treated differently than everyone else.  The good ones go at the top of every draft.  They get paid more than any other position.  They are the de facto face of the franchise.  You’re not allowed to hit them the same way you can hit anyone else on the field.  Like it or not, those are the facts.

That can’t be said for any other position in the sport.  Quarterbacks are the exception to many rules and the Jets should make Wilson an exception to theirs.

The problem with comparing this to the Darnold holdout is that the Jets had a veteran QB on the roster, so Darnold had real concern that if he didn't get into camp, he wouldn't be the Day 1 starter. That created leverage.

Here, Wilson has all the leverage, because the Jets have nobody who can threaten his job.

So now it sounds as if it's about offset and deferred payouts.  Ownership acting like idiots.  You're going to pay the kid the money he is slotted to earn.  Give it to him now and move on.

Time value of money my friend ... somebody is making more money from this deal ... The Jets or The Kid.

Even in the most favorable of investments, we're talking a few hundred thousand dollars. The offset language maybe a few million. In the scheme of things, this is silly. Pay him and play hardball with the safety you draft next at 6 overall next year.

If they knew they couldn't afford to pay the signing bonus due the #2 pick, they should have traded the pick. This is a professional sports franchise in the NY market for Christ's sake. Stop acting like a small market team.
Sounds like it's down to offset language... which is silly.

Especially since this is likely to get addressed in the next CBA, so you could argue that precedent is probably meaningless.

The math on the offsets is that if Wilson sucks so badly that the Jets cut him after 3 years, he might get a few million dollars from another team.  So call it $3M in 2025.  That's what we're talking about as the reason why he is missing practices.  While I generally support the team's position on this (I think offsets are very reasonable), I think they should have let this go a week ago.  Now they're backed into a corner and someone is refusing to let it go in order to save face.  Not a good place to be.

Agree to give it up or not but that money paid out immediately is worth a lot more than deferred payments to Zach.  And in turn to a team

But at this level it’s silly.  Especially for your FQB

It is my understanding that Lance agreed to offset language.  Why is nobody blaming Wilson and his agent??   The tendency on this board is to automatically side with the player and blame Jets management.  Doesn't Wilson have confidence in his ability to play four years with the Jets? This"just give him what he wants" mantra is somewhat disturbing.  I'm glad many of you are not negotiating on my behalf.  If many posters on this board were running the Jets, they would have an average age of 38 and be $100 million over the cap and still go 2-14. Revis would still be playing, Fitz would be the QB making $30 million per, Crowder would be the highest paid receiver in the NFL.........
