92ShaunEllis92
Appreciate the keen eye and summary. In another thread I mentioned my concern, and another poster stated earlier in this thread as well, that this back-half of the defense HAS to step up and tackle if the DLine whiffs or exposes itself to a RB’s cutback. With such a young inexperienced secondary and an enigma at the LB positions, player scheme-discipline will be crucial and it may be ugly at the start of the season against a team like Tennessee. JetNation
Good to be back, let’s get started with initial impressions. We’ll see if these hold true with the two other practices I’ll be attending: General Notes – Props to the staff for the smooth movement of 1000+ fans to the practice facility. – Practice ran 2 hours and 40 minutes. – Shockingly players were in jerseys & shorts (not even shells). Usually by day four pads are worn. – With no pads there were no 1 on 1 periods to really break down players movement skills. – For the most part it was a 50/50 practice with each side of the ball “flashing” during certain periods. New Staff Notes – Practice has three portions now a 24 minute individual warmup period where players work with their position coaches. A 15 minute offense/defense installation period and then the formal practice begins. During the calisthenics period the performance staff added ball skills, where the players had to catch the ball while exercising. – As mentioned before only jerseys & shorts on a day that full pads usually come on. – During the 15 minute installation period the defense really emphasized the coordination of LB’s & DB’s in their coverage responsibilities. At various points Jeff Ulbrich (DC) would pull a LB, CB and S and send a route combination at them to see if they knew what they were doing. – The DLine staff has brought in a blocking sled that is MUCH lower to the ground than normal. Forcing the DLinemen to get low in their stances and to get underneath OLinemen. Because as the saying goes in line play “the low man wins”. – I don’t know if this is what Mike Lafleur (OC) normally does but in the initial 11 on 11 periods he really emphasizes the running game. Then later on he opened up the pass game. Player Notes – The players auditioning for PR are Elijah Moore, Braxton Berrios, Michael Carter and Keelan Cole. – Carl Lawson is going to be a problem. Relentless pursuit in rushing the passer, excellent get off and a wide variety of moves and hand actions. It was a pleasure watching him go against Mekhi Becton, they should really push each other to be better. – The DLine as a whole has much more freedom in getting up the field. To the point where Sheldon Rankins pulled a “Dwight Freeney spin move” from his DT position to rush the passer. Quinnen Williams will be scary in this scheme when he comes back. But that comes with a price because with the emphasis on attacking upfield they got “gashed” a couple of times on cut backs. – Nice to finally see a creative run scheme straight out of the “Shanahan book”. Tons of motions to influence the defense and out of the same formation multiple plays can be run for multiple players. Michael Carter and Tevin Coleman stood out, showing the ability to read the play and determining when/if it was time to cut back. – The OLine was effective in run blocking but they’ll need to stiffen up in pass blocking. At assorted times the DLine really pushed the pocket causing QB’s to throw on the run. Nice holes opened on the left side by Mekhi Becton and Alijah Vera-Tucker. – Solid coverage for the most part by the back seven as they seemed to work on matchup zones. Covering receivers to a certain point and then passing them off to another player. They were solid in their assignments to the point were the QB’s had to hold the ball for what would be a “sack”. An impressive, acrobatic INT by Jason Pinnock (from his back) off of Mike White as he returned it for a TD (30+ yards). QB Notes – They seemed to be “over repping” Zach Wilson to get him up to speed from the two days he missed. And the talents you see on his tape and from his BYU Pro Day were on display. The play of the day was his 80 yard TD (50 yards in the air) to Elijah Moore. Wilson got pressure from his right side, shifted to the left side of the pocket and “flicked” the ball to Moore in stride 50 yards down the right side of the field. In addition you saw Wilson’s ability to create when things broke down and throw with accuracy and velocity even when his feet aren’t on the ground. It would be nice to finally not be teased by a young QB, we’ll see. – Surprising performance by James Morgan, he’s big and not overly mobile so you wouldn’t think he would fit in this offense. But he did a good job moving within the pocket and showed a strong and accurate arm. His two best throws were a 20+ yard seam strike to Tyler Kroft and a 40+ yard TD to DJ Montgomery. Standouts – Zach Wilson – Carl Lawson – Elijah Moore – Michael Carter – Jason Pinnock Concerns – DLine run defense on cut backs – OLine need to tighten up the pocket for the QB’s Read more about #JetsCamp in our forums. Popular Post LIJetsFan
Insights from Today’s Jets Practice Four of our writers and podcast hosts offer their takeaways from seeing the Jets in person today. Turn on the Jets was fortunate to have four writers and hosts at today’s Jets practice. In this article, they share with you their impressions of the day’s events, ranging from Zach Wilson’s performance to Jeff Ulbrich’s defense. What were your impressions of watching Zach Wilson in person today? Matt Gianesses: Zach looked very comfortable today. He threw mostly good, accurate balls with only a few incompletions – one of which was a drop. His throws have significantly more zip on them than the other two QBs on the field, (Morgan and White). The ball flies out of his hand. Stephen Zantz: Zach looked great. He was decisive and accurate. The Elijah Moore deep ball is going to big talking point but Zach made a ton of other solid throws. Besides the Moore TD, he had a great rollout bullet throw to Denzel Mims. Overall, this was a great bounce back practice for Zach after a rough day 1. What are your thoughts on Mike LaFleur’s offense now that you’ve seen it in person? Matt Gianesses: It’s hard to tell this early on, but Zach rolled out of the pocket more than once, which was something Gase refrained from designing for his quarterbacks. I also found it amusing seeing a pre-snap motion in training camp, as Gase-led offenses rarely motioned in the regular season. Stephen Zantz: It’s polar opposite to what we saw with Adam Gase. The biggest thing I noticed was amount of rollouts and use of Zach’s feet. Gase never let Darnold run so it was nice to see an offensive coordinator that is utilizing a QB’s athleticism. Jet fans should be happy that we now have a seblance of what an offense should look in the 2021 NFL. Did any other offensive players stand out to you for positive reasons? Matt Gianesses: To me, Elijah Moore looks like a seasoned NFL veteran. Not just from his on field play, but from the way he carries himself throughout stretches, drills, and team huddles. You could find him dancing, instigating the crowd, and cheering on his teammates. He looks like he’s been here before. Today’s practice was notable because of how well Zach Wilson played. Based on reports, it seems like the defense struggled. Was that your impression of today’s practice? Matt Gianesses: The secondary definitely struggled. The pass rush did not. There were throws from Wilson, Morgan, and White that easily would have resulted in sacks. Lawson put on an absolute clinic in his limited reps. Stephen Zantz: I wouldn’t say the defense struggled as a whole but the secondary was very shaky. A few nice PBUs but overall they were cooked by Zach. Carl Lawson was held relatively in check by Becton today but the DL was getting into the backfield a lot today. Zach’s bomb TD to Moore probably would have been a sack if it was a real game because he held onto the ball for about 4-5 seconds. I think the defense was solid but the offense was just better today. Were there any standout players on defense that you noticed? Matt Gianesses: Carl Lawson pressured the quarterback on what felt like every other rep he took today. He was a nightmare for the offense. The Jets desperately need to keep him healthy alongside Quinnen Williams. Stephen Zantz: No one specifically stuck out to me on defense. Granted most of my attention was on the offense looking for big plays. The one thing I will say was Saleh was super involved in the cornerback positional drills. It was great to see him providing input on a unit that definitely needs work. Are there any other observations or thoughts that you would like to share with fans based on today’s practice? Stephen Zantz: The biggest takeaway I have is that Elijah Moore is going to be a really good player for the Jets for a long time as long as he is healthy. You can see the difference between him and everyone else. His route running and speed combination was awesome to see. He looked like the best player out there today. Something I also loved to see was how involved Saleh was with all the units during practice. I saw him taking notes as he walked around the field. It was just really refreshing to see his approach conmpared to what Gase was doing the past two years. Overall, it was a great day for the fans and I highly recommend people try and go to a practice or the green/white game. 5

Jets Voice of Reason
One of the inherent weaknesses in the over front we are running is the interior running lanes. The linebackers are meant to diagnose and react accordingly, so it’s going to be important that Mosley stays healthy so we have people out there that can play fast.

I want to see how the current LBs play and develop in the preseason and if they correctly diagnose a RB’s cutbacks. That’s why I don’t see any of the rookies starting at OLB anytime soon, but then again as former Safeties, perhaps they can diagnose quicker and get on the field to contribute. GreenFish
I have to imagine a pure zone style running attack is probably the worse case scenario for our style of defense. Going up against man heavy teams should be easier since those running backs are less adept at cutbacks.

We’ve had such shallow rosters for the past decade, in addition to poor starters - that we’ve stopped considering the benefits of rotating in players for down and distance. All of these guys are going to have a role. Saleh & Co will have some tough decisions when cut day comes around. Alka
I have a question for you KRL: "Do you feel pressure to live up to everyone's expectations of yourself, or does it not even enter into the equation?" Because you are truly impressive, and reading your reports is "Must read material".
