The Trevon Wesco fullback experiment seems to be going well for the Jets through the first few practices of training camp.

Robert Saleh wouldn’t go into detail about Wesco’s usage in Mike LaFleur’s offense, but the head coach did praise the converted tight end for his transition to a new position.

“Wesco’s been doing a very good job at learning it and having the versatility not only to play the fullback spot but also the tight end spot,” Saleh said Monday. “Obviously, every week will kind of dictate how those guys are used.”

It’s hard to predict how LaFleur will deploy Wesco outside of his blocking responsibilities, but one name that comes to mind is San Francisco’s Kyle Juszczyk. Saleh noted that the 49ers utilized Juszczyk as a pass-catcher in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, but that wouldn’t necessarily be the same way the Jets use Wesco.

“Wesco is doing a really nice job showing his versatility and creating a little package that will find its way on the football field,” Saleh said.

LaFleur talked a little more about Wesco’s job during minicamps. The offensive coordinator mentioned the necessity for a fullback, but he also pointed out that Wesco wouldn’t be Juszczyk 2.0.

“You like to have a fullback. You like to be in those traditional 21-personnel formations, it just keeps the defense balanced a little bit more,” LaFleur said. “You can go lead their way so you can control the angles, particularly in the run game and obviously all the play passes that come off of it.

“Is he going to do all the same stuff that [Juszczyk] could do? Probably not. Is he going to do some stuff that [Juszczyk] couldn’t do? Absolutely. He’s a bigger body, he’s longer. He’s going to be able to play a little bit more inline, so we can use him in multiple ways, whether it be 21 or your typical 12 personnel formations.”

The fullback position is clearly an important one for LaFleur’s wide-zone scheme. Wesco will play a role in running plays as a lead blocker, and it sounds like his role could develop into one that can give the Jets another layer of ingenuity and creativity.

Did Wesco gain any weight this offseason to make the transition to FB? I kind of like the idea of having an H-back type back there to open up flexibility for the offense.

That said, if Ben Mason shakes loose during final cutdowns, I'm a CT homer and he's from Newtown, bring him in.

Wesco is listed at 6'3" 267 lbs.

By comparison Juszcyk is 6'1" 240 lbs.

Gaining weight does not seem to be a requirement.
