Jets Sign QB Josh Johnson

Joshn Johnson
The NY Jets have announced that they have added a QB to the roster in 35 year old veteran Josh Johnson. With a new arm in camp, the team had to make room on the roster. They did that by waiving linebacker Brendon White.

The journeyman quarterback joins a young QB room with Zach Wilson, 2020 4th rounder James Morgan and 26 year old Mike White. Johnson brings a veteran presence to the room which will hopefully help Zach Wilson. Johnson’s background per the 49ers website and NFL.com:

The 35-year-old last played an NFL regular-season game in 2018 with Washington. A former fifth-round pick in 2008 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Johnson spent time in 2020 on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad after playing in the XFL. Johnson has bounced around the NFL, changing teams 17 times since entering the league. He previously was on the Jets roster for 10 days in 2015.josh

Johnson (6-3, 205) was originally drafted in the fifth round (160th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Throughout his career with the Buccaneers (2009-11), Cleveland Browns (2012), Cincinnati Bengals (2013), San Francisco (2014), New York Jets (2015), Indianapolis Colts (2015), Buffalo Bills (2016), New York Giants (2017), Houston Texans (2017), Washington Football Team (2018) and Detroit Lions (2019), he has appeared in 33 games (eight starts) and completed 148 of 268 pass attempts for 1,632 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s also recorded 67 rushes for 394 yards (5.88 average) and one touchdown on the ground.

Johnson is practicing with the team today, some tweets from the media are below. You can read more about Josh Johnson to the Jets in our forums.

He was with us for about a week at the end of training camp in 2015. But he seems to be popular with coaching staffs and teammates and a guy who can play when asked to. He's been around including being the first Qb draft pick of the Alliance of American Football in 2018 and he played (well) in the new XFL in 2019. It's a good signing for the Jets and he's a guy who could be our no. 2.

Bringing in a bum like this makes me question the front office. Big time.

Sheesh.  Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill.  He’s a camp arm with some system experience.

My gripe is that he will take snaps away from Morgan. The guy seems like he's starting to show something, and needs all the reps he can get. It's not a gripe against Johnson, and I admit I could have phrased it better.

This isn't going to take any significant reps away from Morgan or White.  This was a move to make sure we had enough arms, and one who had system experience.
