Darnold used his paci (mccafrey) for most of the first half, and that Opened up a nice play to the sungod. He otherwise was pedestrian in the second half against a brand new and young defense with the “genius” joe Brady calling plays.

maybe Zach sucks too but at least we don’t have to pay Sam and reset the clock.

He got a 70.1 grade for overall offense, and 79.4 for passing.

I'm sure those are the highest grades of his career. Not even going to bother to check.

They're not but your point is well taken.  It's clearly in the top 10-20% of game grades he's likely gotten.

Lots of people made excuses when Sam did bad here (bad OLine, bad coaching, no weaponzzzz, etc.).  We can't have it both ways.  If he did pretty good yesterday (and he did) then we can't come from other side with the opposite excuses (oh, he did well because he has weaponzzz like McCaffrey, the OLine was good for him yesterday, he has a better coach than Gase, etc.)

That said, I'm still more impressed with what Zach Wilson did given the Jets offensive ineptitude yesterday than what Darnold did with the surrounding support he had.  We could say that he didn't need to do much given a decent lead and the Panthers being able to rush McCaffrey even when the Jets knew they'd be rushing McCaffrey, but the game momentum was slowing shifting the whole second half and Carolina and Darnold could never deliver a knockout punch to the Jets to put the game truly out of reach.

He was pedestrian and his usual self, just in a better situation. He left two easy TDs on the board with poor throws and had the critical goal line turnover. Those plays will typically cost the Panthers a game but we're a poor football team and couldn't capitalize. He looked like many folks expected him to look with better weapons in a better system. Yesterday was about as well as he'll play, against one of the worst teams in the league.

Much of the first half were two-read plays for him: a quick look downfield, then hit McCaffery if the first option wasn't wide open. Caff had what, 9 receptions in the first half? None in the second; maybe it was 8 in the first and one in the second half. We adjusted at halftime and the Panthers offense did very little after the break. He threw for 45 yards on 7/13 in the second half.

This right here is good sh*t. Schematically the defense improved in the second half. The team was down 3 LBs (Sherwood, Cashman, Davis) and was playing a rookie next to a guy that hasn’t played in 2 years. There was rust and there were issues but they weren’t glaring disasters.
