Beerfish
The bottom line is if you want to be a good defense you MUST sack the QB. You must get turnovers via strip sacks and you have to put the other team in long yardage situations. My previous comments holds despite the excuse laden response why they sacked us 6 times we sacked them once. We could literally hold this pace and be out sacked 102 to 17 at the end of the year and people would be acting like dog in hell with coffee....'This is fine.' BTW, they hit Darnold 7 times despite the short pass game and quick hitters. Panthers OL isn’t good and our DL did it’s job

Had one series where the Panthers went 3-and-out and it was all Huff. - 1st down: Shed a blocker and stopped CMC for a 3 yard gain - 2nd down: Rushed from the outside, hurried/hit Darnold forcing early throw and incomplete pass - 3rd down: Lined up outside, stunted inside, hurried/hit Darnold forcing early throw and incomplete pass - Punt
Irish Jet
PFF should be discredited forever for the OL grades they gave the Jets. Just not based in reality.

Notice they signed a LB yesterday whose strong suit is coverage. You're right! And if they knew this was going to happen against one of the the best RB's n the NFL before the game, then they must have assumed they would lose the game, or else they are just dumb. And if the coaches thought that they could cover him on short passes, then they were both wrong and dumb.

In other words, they knew their players aren't good enough, and all we can do is the best that we can, and hope it is good enough. That is basically what it means to be a Jets fan! We got subpar players, but let's hope they still play great, and we can beat a mediocre team who is still much better than we are.

Yes, just as every other team in the NFL does on Sundays. Go to war with the players you have and hope you've prepared well enough to win. What else should they do? Come up with hypothetical game plans using players who are more talented but not on the roster?
Alka
Just now, AFJF said: What else should they do? Come up with hypothetical game plans using players who are more talented but not on the roster? No, what they should do is address the player needs that are most urgent in free agency and in the draft. I have 2 sayings that emphasize this idea: #1. "Hope is not a strategy". #2- "If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail". If you know you will need cover people in the short game, you get them before the season begins. I'm sure that not every team will be as helpless against the Panthers as the Jets were. Why? Because at least a good deal of them will have good enough players to defend the short passes of Darnold with better success then we had. They didn't know what they had in Mosley until they got him back on the field in pads. They still don't know because he has only played one game. This isn't Madden. You don't just add 43 new players in the off-season and watch all of them ball out.

Yes, I did not make up these sayings, but they are sayings that communicate a philosophy that I strongly believe in. Is that better for you? I do agree with you regarding Mosley, in that they really didn't know what they had. I think that is a legitimate point, especially after just one game. As far as adding all of the new players, I suppose my expectations were too high to start the season. But my expectations were also higher for the Offensive and defensive lines to play better than they did, and If they did, perhaps the results would have been different. The Panthers were lucky enough to have a guy like CMC to dump the ball off to to offset the pressure. As many outlets have reported today, the Jets D-line was among the best in the NFL in winning their battles up front against pass blockers. There's nothing any D-line can do when the ball is consistently out in 2.5 seconds or less. As I said on the JN podcast earlier today, this was on the LB's. The D-line won up front, the secondary covered well on the back end, but the LB's were beaten up by McCaffrey who beats most teams up. The OL was a mess but in fairness, that was a group that hasn't played a single game together and it may be time to accept the fact that Connor McGovern may join the long list of Jets free agents who regresses after arriving and doesn't regain his previous form. AFJF
A shame CMC stepped in to pick up Rankins on this play because he just abused the G and could've prevented the TD to Robby.

Regarding the OL, I couldn't agree with you more. I do continue to believe in Joe Douglas, and know that he will eventually "get this right", as far as working in the future to fix this offensive line. As far as the rest, I find it hard to argue with what you have said. This was indeed on the LB's.

Sam's totals on passes under 10 yds. That's the book on defeating a good pass rush. Quick throws, screens, etc. What the Jets lack is the ability of OLBs to limit the RAC on those completions. If the opposing QB completes a short 2 yard pass we need the LB to limit that to a 3-4 yard play. CMac obviously presented a huge challenge (he's one of the Top 5 players in the NFL regardless of position), but going forward this will be a problem until the Jets have fast, sure-handed tacklers at the LB spot.
