How many times did we read from some that Herndon was just misused?   Coaches were the issue?  Was a real talent at TE?  Would absolutely take the NFL by storm if he was just in the right system?

Sometimes, what we see is exactly what we see.

He looked really good his rookie season. No idea what happened after that but he seemed to regress rather than build on it.

I guess against the other TE scrubs we put on the field that might be true.   Just looked and he had 4 TDS and 500 yards his rookie year.  Top flight TEs have that in two  or three games.  Plus all the mind numbing drops.

Until we select someone with the draft pick that turns out to be a decent player who helps this team win games no one fleeced anyone.

It's really the opposite if we're being honest.

The draft is a bit of a crapshoot and if you aren't especially gifted at drafting you want as many bites at the apple as you can.

Griffin was great and earned a new deal until he blew out his ankle.  How quickly this place forgets.

u and I have VERY different definitions of great-a great tight end is kelce

when at his best for the jets he was nothing more than avg under 350 yards under 35  catches -his 5 tds was nothing "great" either

And joe kept him around and extended griffin giving Sam worst tight ends possible

Geez all we needed to do was sign Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry.  It's not like any other teams were giving them huge contracts to go play for them instead.  You know, where a Hall of Fame coach is covered in Rings and all.  But JD was just laughing all the way to potential future draft picks to drive idiots nuts...

Jet Nation logic ... got to love it

I sell someone a bag of burst footballs for $1000. I then spend that $1000 on lottery tickets. I don't win anything. Therefore the guy who paid me $1000 for a bug of burst footballs didn't get fleeced.

?

Exactly.  As if the teams who trade us the picks care at all whether the Jets' picks bust.  That's lost draft capital for the other team and gained draft capital for us.  What happens with the picks is a separate part of the equation.

Yes, Gase does suck, particularly when it comes to using TE's.

But that doesn't explain why Saleh/Lafleur and now the Vikings coaches couldn't/aren't getting anything out of him.

We opted for Kroft/Griffin, who both clearly suck, over giving Herndon a shot in the final year of his rookie deal.

I wouldn't throw the word "great" around with Ryan Griffin.  But yes, he was one of the better TE's we've had in a while, I suppose.  A very unfortunate injury, for sure, and he isn't the same guy anymore.

Ha came in and put up pretty good numbers in his games with Sam and was Sam’s go to red zone target and Safety valve.  Why in world are we criticizing the GM for extending that type of guy?

Do the rest of us a favor since it’s pretty apparent where this complaining is coming from: just go root for Sam and the Panthers, since that’s where he is now.

Maybe “great” is a strong word, but it was clear Sam liked him, especially in the Red Zone.  I’m not going to slam Joe Douglas for extending a player that his, at the time, franchise QB liked.  The ankle injury pretty much destroyed him too.

500 yards in 2 or 3 games? Who? I’ll assume you don’t mean they average that because that would be an epic season. But even kelce’s best 3 game stretch of his career was 395.

Top flight tight ends are in 1,200 - 1,400 range for a 16 game season.

Herndon’s 500 as a rookie looks descent. He just never developed from there and actually regressed.

Joe Douglas may well suck but Mike Maccagnan's legacy as the worst GM in NFL history is being further cemented with each passing day.

I still don’t think Douglas sucks just yet.  I think some of his picks last year (Mims, Perine, Zuniga) were for a staff that he, admittedly, should have really realized we’re probably only going to be here for only 1 more season, 2 at most, but I can understand, to a degree, drafting to help the staff in place succeed.

This years class looks far more promising, and there are guys from last year I still believe can contribute under Saleh and co. (Becton when he catches up to the blocking scheme, Ashtyn Davis if he can get and stay healthy, Bryce Huff *UDFA*, Bryce Hall is shining so far).  Guys like AVT, both Michael Carters, Elijah Moore, Echols, have all flashed so far and look like they belong.  Wilson will be the big focus, but after rewatching the tape and coming back from the ledge, I’m not going to declare the kid a bust two games into his career.

Maccagnan was so bad.  SO bad.  That’s why people are getting impatient.  The mess he left needed serious cleanup.  It didn’t help that the Gase staff was already in place, unfortunately forced JDs hand to keep them one more year after 2019, due to a number of circumstances, and JD had to navigate drafting for them in 2020, while trying to be flexible for the next staff.

Maybe with these draft picks JD gets in these great trades we can start creating a trend in the league using them for something other than players. We seem to struggle with 2nd round picks so lets trade the 2 we have next year for real owners like Pitt. has in the Roonies, and cut our 2 numbskull Johnson brothers. Imagine that, we would have real ownership for the price of 2 2nd round picks.

Okay, five.  A guy like Kelce puts up 100+ routinely.  You know what Herndon put up routinely?   Inept NFL TE play.  Colloquially referred to as chickensh*t.

Yea. He Sucks. Not really defending the player he’s proving to be. I just think it’s fair to say he looked promising as a rookie.

Big deal. Who the Hell has he picked outside of the first round that you really feel good about. I recall when we drafted Moore, someone said he will change the way defenses play us just by stepping on the field. How has that worked out?

/joking

Well, it is hard to tell. Based on the Free Denzel talk you would think Mims was the best WR drafted and he was picked in the 2nd.

Once Gase has been inside of you.. you're never the same.

In all due respect, I completely disagree with you.

Let's make an analogy, shall we?

I bet someone that I can run 100 yards in 11 seconds.  I bet them 1 Million dollars.  I win the bet.  Question:  Did I fleece the guy I just won the bet with?  Obviously, the answer is yes, I did.

Now, I take that 1 Million dollars and go to the casino and lose the 1 Million dollars on a hand of Blackjack.   Did I still fleece the guy I made the bet with?

Of course I did.  I misused the money I won by making a stupid bet.  I ended up with nothing in the end, but I still had the compensation to do with it what I will.

The same is true for the 4th round pick we received.  The 4th round pick represents an opportunity to attain a draft pick that is worthy of the 4th round.  If JD squabbles that draft pick, then he should be blamed for misusing the capital that he earned by fleecing the team that he traded it for.
