Think he's only 25-26.  If he's pulling down 8-10 sacks a year, think he can in this system, and continues being disruptive, $13.75M is cheap. Look what ER's are getting.

Yeah, their gambling on him, but if he hits, great deal.  He really has been impressive.

He does not strike me as a guy who will get paid and slack off. This is a good deal at his present level of play which I expect to continue and improve.

it’s a lotta dough for sure. Based on precedent I’m guessing JD front loaded the guarantees in the first 2 years. 
 

Cap is supposed to go significantly up soon.  Hope we look back on this as a bargain in 3 years.

just never expected a waiver wire pickup to blow up like this and be considered a core guy. Love that he’s only 25 and now JFM, QW, Huff, Carl Lawson and Rankins are all signed for next year.

Franklin-Myers play is pointing to a 10+ Sack / 10+ TFL season.  And that
kind of production would be worth 15+ million a year on the open market.
Franklin-Myers is unique because he has DT size and strength (6-4 290)
but has the ability to bend off the edge like a smaller man

Franklin-Myers looks really good out there, so it’s fine, but not brilliant. He might be buying a stock at it’s high here.

“Brilliant” would’ve been doing this before the season, before he got his dollars up even more. 

Good for JFM, but if done in the offseason I’m not sure the same extension would’ve been $10MM/yr. 

At least he’s not waiting until after the player’s final under-contract game had been played and then beginning extension talks, like Maccagnan.

This is it.  We have the money.  Let's spend it on our good players.  

For years, we've simply let our good players go or traded them away.  Now it time to start spending and trying to build.  We've had the most cap space in the league for what seems like 5 years running.

This was right move see if he can keep playing at high level. Check, would other teams pay more for him, check...let's build the team with our "guys".....yes he counts

I really hope this works out. JFM has been excellent so far, but 4 years 55/30 kinds of excellent?  We’ll see. As long as he doesn’t pull a Wilkerson this is a solid signing.
 

I like that JD is starting to commit to players. I’d like to see a few more of these soon. The cap space is there.

This should not get overlooked.  Until now, the players have only seen stars dragged out, released, or traded.  Now they've seen a guy who was drafted low play hard and earn a star-level payday.  This is a strong signal to send to a young team.  Even if you want to quibble over a half million or so, it's not important.  This is.

I don't  get why everyone thinks this is a lot to pay. We have a ton of cap and the best way to spend it is retaining your good players. I like it

The Jets defensive had a big day on Sunday vs the Titans with 7 sacks. John Franklin-Myers had one of those sacks, his 3rd of the season. On Thursday his meteoric rise was rewarded with a 5 year, 55 million contract.

Franklin-Myers was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 4th round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He played in Super Bowl LIII against New England Patriots and sacked QB Tom Brady. At the end of the following training camp, in August 2019, he was waived by the Rams.

Franklin-Meyers and the Jets have agreed to a four-year contract extension for $55 million with $30.2 million guaranteed, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.

It’s a huge payday for the 25-year-old and a nod to him being a focal point of the future for Gang Green.

In his third season with New York, Franklin-Myers has already started a career-high four games and has tallied three sacks, a forced fumble and 15 tackles.

He’s flashing, is young, and plays an impact position. This makes sense.

Young, ascending guy at a premium position. JD knows him, and clearly feels comfortable rewarding him.

It looks like a lot, and it is, but pass-rushers always get paid on the open market.

If he had waited until after the season, the price could have gone up significantly with free agency on the horizon.

Smart move - avoids the need to have to tag him (which comes at a heavy price) and gets him under contract long-term.

Yes, there's risk - all big extensions are a risk - but signing a young, ascending and productive talent at a premium position is worth that risk. If JFM continues his current path, this deal can prove to be a bargain.
