Germany is much more interested in the sport. Hence why 5 of the 9 NFL Europe teams were located in Germany. NFL Europe wasn't successful because it was worse than expansion level football. It was primarily practice squad guys trying to get some reps to show what they could do. Most of them never played a down in the NFL, and those who went on the be successful were the exception not the rule. UK fans saw it for what it was - a pale imitation of the real thing - hence the far lower attendances. So you could argue that we're a far more developed fan base from that point of view. Give us the real thing and we show up (65k at the game on Sunday ... compare that to the Tenn game in New Jersey). Given that most of the fans there were not Falcon or Jet fans, and the price of the tickets, I'd say that shows there is a huge interest in the game. They could easily sell out far more than the 2 or 3 games each year.

That's fair, I just think if you were trying to start a pro team in the NFL the novelty would wear off quicker in London than it would in Germany. And I wasn't trying to argue NFL Europe was a success or anything. Just that it was a bit more successful in Germany than the UK. 2-3 games a year is fine. But beyond that? Support would be limited. Germany is still the most pro-American football country in Europe. Makes sense. Kind of like how Japan likes baseball. US had a big influence here after WWII and German teams won like 75% of the NFL-Europe championships. There are some semi-pro teams around to this day here.

joebracken33
I was in the stadium As an Irishman I greatly appreciated the shortened GSTQ I always think that everyone who sings TS-SB tries to do it in their own style / change the ending so that they get remembered. This version was another attempt to do that.My sense from the crowd was that Katherine Jenkins won the singing contest. The crowd preferred Marisha Wallace’s overall performance as she the guts to stand on top of the stadium knowing that they would quickly be filling her airspace with fighter planes and fireworks. As one commentator quipped - “She is very committed …. or maybe she should be committed”Sent from my iPhone using JetNation.com mobile app

Vudu
I'm really tired of the totally overdone R&B massacring of the national anthem. It's over, it's old hat. It's been done, and a lot of these people need to stop thinking they're Aretha Franklin. Learn the words and stop worrying about hitting the extra high note. I'd like to see how many of these singers can actually explain to you what the words mean without looking at them on a piece of paper.Maybe we should have some Rock and roll versions of the anthem — another thing stolen from black people.

The real difficulty in starting up a team anywhere - be it UK, Germany or elsewhere - is that most of your expected fan base already have a team they follow (often very passionately). How do you get people to give up being fans of established teams to follow some new organisation that has no history, no meaning, no attachment? You're not going to build up a fan base of people who are all new to the game, so your best bet is that it's the fans of tomorrow that will become loyal fans - but that is a VERY long term commitment, you could be looking at 10 years to get a decent home following if you go that route. And that's assuming people will still go to watch an expansion team through all the struggles and losing that that would entail. I feel that what we have at the moment is the best way to do it - a handful of games each year with rotating teams so that everyone plays every X years (looking at you Green Bay Packers!). The support is there - we had two 1-3 teams facing off last week, this week is 1-4 vs 0-5 but the stadium will be full, and the cash tills will ring.

I agree. I also thought it was an analogy for the relationship between the two countries. You know the conservative parent and young child who has eclipsed their expectations.
