NY Jets interested in bringing back Josh McCown, per report

Sounds like a garbage report.

The NY Jets could be interested in a reunion with longtime NFL quarterback Josh McCown at some point this season, per a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

La Canfora reported earlier in the week that multiple teams were "keeping tabs on" McCown and that both the Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars had shown interest in the offseason. The implication was that both teams are still potentially interested in bringing him in.

McCown is currently helping coach his son's high school football team in Texas and would likely not return to the NFL until the high school season is over in November.

That means, if McCown were to be signed by an NFL team, he wouldn't be able to join them until Week 9 or 10. Still, it's a situation worth monitoring.

Would a Josh McCown reunion make sense for the NY Jets?

McCown's near-20-year career features stints with over a dozen different football franchises including a memorable couple of years with the Jets.

The 42-year-old started 17 games with the Jets from 2017-2018 playing some of the best football of his career in the process. He's since had short stints with both the Philadelphia Eagles and most recently the practice squad of the Houston Texans last season.

Both the Eagles and Texans were interested in hiring McCown as a coach with the Texans even interviewing him for their head coach vacancy. However, McCown is reportedly still interested in playing.

The Jets' current backup quarterback situation is likely among the worst in the league. Former Dallas Cowboys' fifth-round pick Mike White is the designated QB2 on the depth chart behind Zach Wilson with fellow well-traveled veteran Josh Johnson on the practice squad.

White has never appeared in an NFL game while Johnson has started just three games in the past decade.

McCown has plenty of experience and, more importantly, would serve as a valuable mentor to Wilson. Much like he did with Sam Darnold, McCown could be brought in to serve as a veteran presence in the QB room — something the Jets don't really have at the moment, unless you include Johnson.

At 42-yeards-old, McCown would be one of the oldest players in the NFL if he were to return for another season.

Keep an eye on Josh McCown as the season progresses. The Jets just might make the call for a reunion

Think having an old guy who can be in Wilson's ear and step for a quarter in when things go to sheet without thinking he's taking the job makes a world of sense. McCown has made no secret he wants to get into coaching; sensible transition for everyone. But Jets gonna Jet.

I’m literally banning my own fat ass if this happens.

It's just so Jetsy.

(1) Pass on cheap, young options who still hold some potential upside that tons of fans have been screaming for.

(2) Realize after week 5 of league-worst QB play that you need a credible backup.

(3) Hit the dumpster behind the AARP for a retired QB long past his "prime" (term used lightly).

80% of Jets fans could do a better job in the draft and FA than Jets GMs for the last 10+ years.

The rumor comes from Jason LaCanfora

When has this dickhead ever been right?

It’s mind boggling how he’s still employed as an NFL “Insider”.

He’s not even telling us anything. It’s an article with him saying “they could do this”. Thanks! Keep filling your article quotas.

Yep. We have The Holy Trinity of QB development right there. Why mess with it?

Thank you Joe Douglas! Thank you!

Talking of Holy Trinities ... at one point yesterday the fans a few rows down stood up to let someone out. The three jerseys were Tebow, Darnold and Flacco. :D

This was a great idea prior to the season.  Now, if true, it's embarrassing and reeks of desperation.

I'd love it.

Let Zach know he has a couple weeks to get better, or Josh will start once he's ready.

If that hurts Zach's feelings too much, F him.

I mean doubt it would, but many claim young QBs need to be coddled.

LMAO. Do you honestly think that bringing in Mccown is in any way a threat to Wilson's job security. He just won us a game a week ago. The defense couldn't stop an Average Falcons offense without their top 2 WRs. Wilson may not be good enough to carry this team, but he is not the problem on this team.

He-he...  well I'd hope so.  If by week 8 or 9 Zach can't make simple passes...  it'd be time to bench him.

Disagree on the D.  Zach has good WRs and a better oline than Sam ever had.

Kid needs to play better or team needs to move forward w/o him this year.  Kid suck ass so far.
