I, honestly, don’t understand how anyone can think the Kotite years were worse than the current ones—especially last year. They sucked; but not this bad, not for this long and not with such vigor.

Kotite was a really good offensive coach. I think his offense would be perfect for Wilson. Zach and Kenny O have similar skill sets.

Wilson was supposed to be good in a Shannahan type offense. So far, no bueno. What makes you think Wilson would excel on Kotite’s? O Brian was a statue. Big arm, but I don’t see many similarities between the two at all.

Wilson was more athletic, but Kenny could throw from a lot of different arm angles as well. Kotite did a good job with Kenny early in his career. Bombs away to Wesley Walker!

Hugh Douglas gained almost 30lbs during the bye week under kotites strict discipline lol I’ll never forget that.

and everybody…I mean everybody had pulled hamstrings.

famous kotite quote at a presser “we gotta get back on track” derp reporter: “coach, when has the team been on track?” Derpa dee derp

”I’m not fired and I’m not quitting, I’m just walking away” :rl:

And even then, Douglas had his worst season under Parcells, who misused Douglas for a season and then traded him for a 2nd and a 5th. With a subsequent trade-down in round 2, the net result was

  • Hugh Douglas

for

  • Dorian Boose
  • Kevin Williams
  • Eric Bateman
  • Casey Dailey

Joe Douglas has some big shoes to fill in terms of terrible drafting in his first few seasons as GM of the Jets. Who knows how his tenure here would've seemed if Belichick didn't plead & ultimately convince him to sign Testaverde.

...also f*** Kotite, whose birthday was yesterday lol

Sticking a 4 win 49ers team in there without putting in the 2020 jets is interesting, I wonder what their reasoning behind that is. Because while that 49ers teach was pretty bad, the jets last year didn't even look competitive (Sometimes like this year too), so it makes me wonder whether they should have made the list

Hm wow amazing stat

Shows you how stupid that list actually is. They go on to say the Jets lost their first 8 games but lost 6 by one possession or less. The officiating during that season was so bad its something I will never forget  The team was not bad the  coach was a horror show. The core of that team went on to the AFCCG 2 short years later by adding a few FA's  Curtis Martin Vinny T.  Kevin Mawae also Brian Cox and Jumbo Elliott

Problem is, who is today's "Bill Parcells".

There isn't exactly a famous can't miss veteran proven-resume coach just sitting around waiting for our call.

The other problem is this

The Jets started 0-8 and lost six games by one possession or less.

When did we last lose 6 games by one possession or less? That shows that there is talent and potential, a team that is close. BP came in and unlocked that potential.

As we stand now - or as we have stood at any point for the last 5 years - is there truly that potential?

Yep, he wasn’t a 3-4 defensive lineman. That defense was all smoke and mirrors anyways for 3 years.

off the top of your head lol who was the Jets best talent evaluator and drafter of all time? Jim Kensil?

Regardless of how he drafted they went from the laughing stock of the nfl and the consistent butt of jokes on espn to being respected in his first year and super bowl contenders the next two.

one thing I’ll never forget about him was his first game as jets coach against Seattle in august 1997 the Jets had like a 24-0 lead at halftime and he was asked coming out for the second half of the running game was going to be focused on, he said “no, we will continue to attack, no lead is safe” that’s the kind of sh*t I haven’t heard from a jets coach in almost 25 years. Before the jax playoff game in January 1999 he said “we have to score at least 30 points to have a chance”, none of this bs about ball control lol.

He wasn’t perfect but we ain’t finding anybody like him in todays game to save our franchise again.

I'll just say it, 2018-2021 (so far) Jets have all been worse and harder to watch that the Kotite Year of 1996.

Perhaps the "Bias of Now" has me, and the Kotite pain has faded away, but these last three years have been utterly horrid.

Yeah I agree. Just just bad but boringly so.

Rich Kotite wasn’t a terrible hire. He was a really good OC with the Jets.

He wasn't a terrible hire, he was a catastrophic hire.

The 1996 team, objectively, had much more talent than last year's disaster. This is proven by the years immediately before and after Kotite.

Gase was terrible, but RK was the worst HC in Jets history. Period. Stop.

That said, the last few years the Jets have been unwatchable.  The 1996 team actually was competitive in most games they played.

Bill Parcells is why Bill Bellichek went to the Patriots.

Whatever good he did for us, the harm he caused with Bellichek can never be overcome.

No, Leon Hess dying and woody Johnson and Steve gutman caused BB to leave. Parcells was leaving anyways. They all saw the writing on the wall when woody wants to be the main decision maker. Bob Kraft learned his lesson, woody not so much.

oh i forgot. the new strategy today is to take 17 point halftime leads and then let a team get within 3 and almost lose it.

In their 62 year history, the New York Jets have come back from a deficit of 17 points or more exactly 4 times.  They've played 962 games.

When a team has a lead of that nature, all they have to do is not be very careless with the football and the clock runs out.  Sure, the Jets may cut the lead to 8, or 6, or 3, but it doesn't matter.  The clock runs out.

I'm not sure I totally agree with that.

Parcells changed the culture and set the table for a 14 years span from 97-10 where the Jets had 10 winning seasons in 14 years, made the playoffs 7 times and made the AFC Title Game Three times -- easily the most successful extended period in the franchises history. Those of us who grew up during it probably took it for granted -- these last ten years, while closer to what the franchise has been for most of its history, have been brutal.

Bill Parcells had absolutely nothing to do with the success we had under Rex Ryan more than a decade later.

Bill Parcells is, IMO, the most overrated man in Jets History.  Gets so much credit he doesn't deserve for events long after he was gone, and takes none of the criticism for his massive botches as a talent evaluator, de facto GM and front office guy he so completely deserves.

He had one great season.  One.

Fun fact: Bill Parcells doesn't have a single playoff win (maybe even appearance, I don't remember) without Belichick as his DC. He also wouldn't guarantee he'd select Peyton #1 overall, and treated Belichick so badly that Belichick would do anything to get out from under him.

Think about that for a second. The Jets could have had Peyton Manning and Bill Belichick together for 15+ years. Yet, Jets fans want to celebrate the fat tuna.

I don't think it is necessarily recency bias as much as the weight of the last decade.  Not one playoff appearance in 11 years.  In 1996, they had only been out of the playoffs for 5 seasons.  Two years later they were an SB contender.

This is the 11th season of mostly bad football.  Different coaches, different GMs, different QBs, complete roster turnover two or three times.  And we still have not been able to build a competitor.  I really think the weight of the last decade makes this stretch worse than the 90s.

This has been a really bad period. Much worse than kotite and the 70’s.  I think the big difference is kotite did it with better players.  In this recent decade there just been any that scare the other team.  Maybe adams for a short time but just not many others.  And certainly not at QBs.

Similar aesthetic, but it’s like if we replaced Kotite with Dave Wannstedt instead of Parcells.

Actually the difference is Kotite had talent that he bungled into a 1 win team.  Gase had no talent and left no talent to Saleh so the Wannstedt line doesnt really pertain other that for an attempted laugh

Parcells truthers are just Jets fans who are so brain-fried by decades of losing that they simply cannot comprehend what a winning Jets team would look like, so they reject it out of hand and look to burn anyone who tries to change the losing culture as an apostate. Savages from a jungle full of L’s.

He took over a 1-15 team that nobody was interested in coaching, and didn’t have a losing record in 3 years. 9-7 in 1997, 12-4 in 1998  and first division title in forever. 8-8 in an injury depleted 1999 season. Somehow that equates to “just one good season” and he sucks just…because..

and these hypotheticals that Belichick would have stayed with the Jets under woody if it wasn’t for Parcells Is a fantasy. Kraft dropped his pants for Belichick (who was unproven at the time and was considered a failure in Cleveland). Was woody gonna drop his pants after paying $600 million? Never, he just did it this year for Joe D, that’s 20 years later.

Parcells and Belichick both quit five minutes after they met Woody Johnson. That’s the story of Belichick and the Jets. Jets fans don’t like that story because Johnson is still here, he’s going nowhere, and the Jets are still a shambles 20 years later
