I didn't think modern cars caught on fire that easily.  Anyone know why it would flame from a rear end collision?

Holy sh*t.

Yea, I thought that was Exclusive to the Ford Pinto. I guess Ruggs must have been going really fast.

No surprise there.  He'll be in jail no fewer than 3 years all the way up to a max of 26 years.  His career is completely over.

fixed it, I see no way he'll ever come back into the league. Michael Vick was done after dogfighting, this is way worse (no offense to dogs)

Would either be hybrid or gas powered. Besides, that type of fire would spark from electricity unless there was a very flammable medium, like gasoline.

NHTSA says improper battery installation or front-end collision repair was a factor in the complaints. The agency says the RAV4 has a higher number of fire complaints in the battery area than comparable vehicles.

Investigators will try to understand better what is contributing to the fires. The vehicles aren’t being recalled but the investigation could lead to one.

Huh, that is interesting. That must be a result of it being a hybrid, because as far as I know RAV4s aren't fully electric. But you do make a good point here

Just an observation.  I’ve noticed since we are post COVID much more traffic.  Much more high speed traffic and more big accidents.  People aren’t taking mass transportation and the increased traffic has led to a lot of frustrated drivers.  Traffic fatalities are up significantly.

Obviously drunk and impaired driving is another issue but it’s generally less safe on the roads today then before the pandemic.   Stay focused.

it’s a terrible tragedy to lose a family member to an accident.  You don’t even get to say goodbye.   Still I can’t help hoping that Ruggs finds a way to atone and live a productive life.   He made a terrible decision that he will have to pay for and live with.   It doesn’t mean he’s irredeemable or garbage.

He is irredeemable and a piece of human garbage. I have no sympathy for him, and I hope that he feels the same misery as he has caused the people who knew the 23 year old victim. This was 100% completely avoidable. Selfish a$$hole, Henry Ruggs took the life of a woman and her dog because he is a piece of sh*t and an irredeemable a$$hole.

Even you might be redeemable?

We don’t even have the full story yet…

His BAC? Were they both intoxicated? Did they know each other? Was this a companion? or relative? And they were “racing” home from the same party? Was this a money grab gone wrong?

All we know is this tragic accident involved two extremely young people (22, 23) at a time when most people are or should be sleeping.

Also was reported that the Rav 4 had a dog in the car that was killed as well.  Sad story all around.

I really feel for the poor young woman and her family. What a horrible way to go. I hope this horrible accident is well publicized and talked about by the NFL. Maybe we can turn this into a teaching moment for all of us. DONT PARTY AND DRIVE.

There have been countless "teaching" moments for pro athletes and the general public.  Obviously, we still keep getting more "teaching" moments.

Youth and wisdom are often hard to find in one place at the same time.

Its not? If you can direct me to the place where you CAN feel empathy for a twenty two year old kid who did something stupid while drunk hat has ruined his life, I'll go there.

Have you ever driven drunk or tipsy? Has anyone you know done so? I'm sure its happened and you didn't call them a human piece of garbage only because they had the luck not to kill someone.

Emotions are going to be strong now, which is understandable. However, it's not the act that makes one redeemable or not; it's what they do afterward. This we will not know for a long time.

On the same token, if your mom, wife or daughter made this mistake, your life would be forever altered negatively.  And you’d likely have a different perspective than you do on this particular situation.

Drunk drivers who kill people did not "make a mistake", they made a choice.

They do not deserve our pity and they are not victims, no matter who they are.  Or how much we love them.

Or how good they were at some kids sport.

Whether anyone feels sorry for Ruggs is really insignificant.  There are many lives ruined.  This shouldn’t turn into a “I’m right, you’re wrong” pissing match.

This is what the "but I really, really love famous athletes and care vastly more about them than the actual victim they killed, they were a nobody anyway" contingent of sportsfandom usually says in these situations.  Amazing what people will convince themselves of, really.

Ruggs isn't a victim here.  He murdered an innocent 23 year old girl and caused her to be burned alive.

I'll pass on your 'there is no right or wrong' moral equivalence argument, thanks.  There most assuredly IS a right and a wrong here.

I'd say more, but it's probably best I drop out of this thread before I do.

Those fires are typically caused by a fault in the 47kW hybrid battery, typically from faulty charging practices or battery "runaway". Hyundai and Kia have been notorious for it the last few years, Toyota not as frequent but not unheard of.

The fire in this case more likely than not a result of fuel tank/line breach and ignited fuels. Once the fuel get ls going, cars light up fast and intense. Modern cars are actually very flammable.  Tye last Vehicle Fire Investigation class I taught, we put a bag of chips on the floor by the pedals of a car and lit it with a BBQ lighter (no other accelerates were used). Within 2 minutes the car was fully involved and resulted in a full "burn out".

Putting my own lawyer hat on here, this is where I think the defense is going to focus their case, that the fire was due to an issue with the battery, which caused the fire, thus Ruggs's drunk driving was not the sole cause of her death. I AM NOT excusing or defending Ruggs in any way, shape or form, I am solely trying to share the perspective of someone who works in this "industry".

A solid investigation will refute that easily by analyzing burn patterns and points of origin through material analysis, which will more likely than not rule out that hypothesis. Hybrid batteries are usually located directly behind the rear seat, below a horizontal firewall between the passenger compartment and trunk.

Determining the point of origin should be relatively simple. While the ignition source may be electrical, the cause will most likely be high energy collision/impact. Fire determination under NFPA 921 will probably be listed as 'accidental', but due to gross negligence or disregard.

No. I haven't. I am not a piece of human garbage. I don't put the life of others in my drunken hands. This story has been told a million times, and the players were educated on drunk driving. They have a free car service for when you cannot drive, but selfish Henry Ruggs chose manslaughter.

As always, thanks very much for your informed response.   As I was reading your post, I thought that I could not imagine the horrific scenes you and other first responders have witnessed.  Thanks for all you do, JE1.

Just for the record, I am not sh*tting on anyone who had a couple of beers and then did a hyper-vigilant drive home. This piece of sh*t was drunk and speeding in his sports car.

Exactly.  Huge difference.  When young and stupid I once got pulled and blew a 0.03.  I was driving carefully and it was not over the legal limit, and the officer didn't ticket me for anything I was doing.  But I still felt lousy about it and vowed never to do that again.  And I didn't.

This human piece of garbage...born that way or raised that way?

It can only be one or the other. There is no choice C.

You know when women are inebriated to a certain degree, they are no longer responsible, sexually, for their actions, legally.
