Expansion to 40 teams isn’t as crazy as it sounds

-  If/when the NFL offers St. Louis an expansion team in an effort to resolve the Rams relocation litigation, the league wouldn’t move to an odd number of teams. The league would add a second team, if it adds a first one.Which gives rise to a bigger question. How many more teams could the NFL eventually add?

- -  Yes, 40 teams. If the expansion process from 32 begins, 40 becomes the natural ending point. That would result in eight divisions of five teams each. And it would make sense at that point to have 16 playoff teams. There could even be a preliminary round that trims a field of 20 teams to 16, with six teams in each conference getting a bye and four others playing in a new wild-card round, locking in a field of eight teams per conference.

- - -  The conversations about possibly growing to 40 teams already are happening, at the highest levels of the league. It will take time to get there, but in time it will happen. The money will make it so.

Great. We haven’t won in 52 years and now they’ll be 8 more teams to beat. I’m not gonna live long enough to see the Jets get back to a Super Bowl!

this would make more sense if the league moves to a Serie A and Serie B like format, so awful teams such as the Jets are buried in Serie B and truly have to fight their way out to be promoted to the "premiere" league. So in a way, the Jets who were part of the reason the AFL and NFL joined, could be now part of the reason for a split.

Yep, only way this # (or anything close to it) would make sense is with relegation.

and do away with divisions and switch to all vs all within the same Serie A

Yeah, I guess if you're going to have relegation there wouldn't be enough teams within each level for there to be divisions any longer.  Particularly since you don't know which teams will be up or down.  The Jets wouldn't be playing the Patriots after getting relegated, for instance, so traditional division rivalries would essentially be dead.

If you think there's bad football now, just wait.

Quite the "contraire", by having a relegation or a Serie B, you would only have the really good teams playing against each other, thus having quality football on display without having to wait for playoffs. For instances you would have a weekly basis of Chiefs playing the Cardinals, Packers playing the Bills, Ravens vs Bucaneers, ets. week in and week out. On the other hand you, as a national audience, never have to suffer watching teams such as te Jets , Jaguars, Lions, etc. And then maybe, just maybe, you get the owner to actually care for its football team.

...if they can ban the Jets from streaming services too so we don't have to torcher ourselves, I'm in! DOIT!
