Still expect a trade for bullpen help.

Lindor has the energy and positivity you need beside the talent.

DeGrom tonight holding my breath

I would also not be surprised to see a trade for Contreras. Our catchers suck. I would only trade someone who is not in the top 20 prospects.

Another solid win even with Sherzer not having his best stuff last night.

Lindor is finally becoming “that guy” that we hoped he would be when signed.

Soto showing on both sides of the ball of why he is such a desire for many GM’s If he were signed by Mets, who gets replaced in OF? Not Marte…. Cahna? Nimmo? Good problem to have.

Mets have been very quiet…. Makes me think something is up. I’d pass on any deal that involved Baty, Alvarez, Vientos or Mauricio unless for Soto and only 1 of the 4 plus Peterson and Ramirez a couple throw-in players. All are playing well.

Rehab Alert

McCann homered in rehab start and Trevor May pitched a scoreless inning.

Sounds like Vientos is who Cubs want for Contreras and Sox for Martinez. Have to get. RH bat in this lineup to DH vs lefties. Davis is a flat out bum. Wonder if Brandon Drury may be the target? Then, try to get Robertson from Cubs. Or, if they think Alvarez is ready, bring him up. Are they really only go with one lefty in the pen?

This farm system was destroyed by BVW and we are paying a price for it now. The trade last yr for Baez only exacerbated it. I don't want to give up any top guys in the system for a 4 month rental. Having said that, I think if the Padres pull off the deal and get Soto, the Cubs will be calling.

I really cant believe we're going to sit our hands again this year.  Like, wtf?  I just dont even understand this strategy at all.

We got Baez and it cost us PCA. If we are trading a top prospect, I at LEAST want another year or two of control like Soto.

I'm completely and utterly bewildered.  The entire NL contenders and even those that are some what of a longer shot, just got sooo much better and the Mets, did absolutely nothing while they fell back into typical deGrom hitting form, relievers gave up 4 runs and Nido is still out there sac bunting when apparently Contreras could have been had?

I have no words other than, we all know how this ends...we've seen this movie 1000x time before.

So who did you want them to get? Soto… The Reds pitcher… In which of our top prospects were you willing to give up for these two? I personally was hoping we would get Contreras but according to reports Chicago was asking way above his pay grade.
Cohen is paying $300 million for this year’s roster. I can wait one more off-season to start seeing Alverez and Baty & Mauricio & Vientos To start moving up to the big leagues and strengthen our roster internally.

There are plenty of names that were shipped for peanuts that would have helped the Mets.  Power OF, Contreras, tons of relievers, etc.  Personally, I think our farm is completely and utterly overrated and I'm guessing the league felt the same way.  Alvarez might be something but the rest are pure meh, strikeout a ton, position-less, etc, I think we ranked like 20th.  That's laughable and not worthy of "we dont want to ship the farm".  IMO there is actually nothing exciting at all in the farm and that's why I assume they couldnt pull anything off.

All I know is this, visions and farms are great, they dont work out 90% of the time.  Your windows are small in the MLB and you have to strike when you have a chance.  Remember when we thought we had the greatest pitching staff ever assembled?  lol   You have to capitalize and the Mets failed, IMO.

Tell that to the Dodgers, Cards, Braves, Astros and recently Yanks and Red Sox. They deal from a position of developmental depth that the Mets don’t have at this time. Mets have  the #1 Alvarez, #18 Baty, #50 Mauricio and the # 85 Ramirez (MLB Rankings) all getting ready to come up. We have a solid core with Marte, Alonso, Lindor and Cahna. I’m sure deGrom will be resigned to go with Sherzer, Walker, Carasco and Peterson. Bring back Nimmo with Ramirez in CF, put Baty & Escobar at 3rd, Alvarez & McCann at C.

Remember key players Diaz, deGrom, Bassit, Nimmo, Ottavino and Lugo are FA next year. You need to have some cheap exceptional talent to offset these huge extensions. If you trade away these gems of the farm system you won’t be in contention for long.

Here is a fair article on the Mets trade line dilemma…. Edited for focus

https://nypost.com/2022/08/03/mets-trade-deadline-caution-didnt-help-world-series-hopes/

Anyway, the Mets need to deal with losing these minor league stars, and to get on with the business at hand, which should be taking a shot at the World Series. If they do win it, I am going to guess that whatever they did on Aug. 2 won’t be a major contributing factor. I heard comparisons to the Braves’ under-the-radar moves a year ago, but this is not that, either. They acquired three above-average part-time players and an above-average right-handed reliever.

While they did take runs at all the fine players listed above, ultimately, they settled.

Give them credit for improving the farm system when it was not only possible, but probable, they’d make impact moves at the deadline. But throw them a demerit for being so afraid to eat crow with another Crow-Armstrong deal that it triggered 24 hours of close to nothingness.

There’s no doubt it was a seller’s market, initiated by the Mariners’ deal for top-of-the-line starter Luis Castillo, in which they surrendered their Nos. 1, 3 and 5 prospects in a fit of desperation, borne of two straight decades of incompetence. It’s hard to miss the playoffs for 20 straight years, especially from the perch of big-revenue Seattle.

In the end, Robertson went to the Phillies, a competitor in the NL East, for Philadelphia’s 26th-ranked prospect, Vazquez was traded for a pair of lightly regarded minor league position players, Mancini for part-time center fielder Jose Siri and pitcher Chayce McDermott, who is now 12th in the Orioles system. Iglesias was mostly a money dump. And Contreras wasn’t traded, which is really more a Cubs problem than a Mets problem.

So what are the Mets left with? They got two halves of a DH platoon with Daniel Vogelbach and Darin Ruf, who have fine hitting records against the opposite arms, but aren’t full-time players for a reason, Tyler Naquin, a nice backup outfielder, and Mychal Givens, a reliever who looks like mostly a small salary dump, based on what little the Mets gave up.

The Mets ended up surrendering next to nothing at the deadline. Except of course the opportunity to enhance their chances at a World Series. Which is everything.

What I like about what the Mets did during the trade window was to fortify their infrastructure and make smart moves to enhance Buck's strategy of using the roster and role players in a way kind of like BB does with NEP. The Mets improved in the DH category which was underperforming by getting good hitters on the left side and right side to platoon. Both guys they got are good from one side but not the other. They got a good relief pitcher someone Buck knows from his time with the Orioles. The GM seems to be working with the manager and if true that's a good thing getting him the players he likes and wants on the team.

I was not happy with the outcome of the Mets trade deadline non-deals. There was a need beeping for an additional lefty reliever. That said, I have no idea what others were asking. Is there a Cohen penalty that others clubs will not deal with given similar yields? I doubt it.

Other side of the coin, as I looked at bullpen rankings this morning, the Mets have the third lowest bullpen ERA in the NL. That surprised me. Behind the Braves and the Dodgers.

Let’s look at the new pieces the bullpen will be getting. Givens is a very solid reliever, yesterdays results none withstanding. We now have May back. If he just plays to the back of his baseball card, that will be fine. Once the double headers are over, Peterson will be going to the pen. As will Megill. And once the playoffs start, one more starter will be going to the bullpen.

Those are a lot of pieces the bullpen did not have at the beginning of this week. But, I wish they would have landed a lefty specialist

Hopefully for middle innings stuff only. Guy gives up HR's every time he steps on the mound. My biggest concern is that the analytic guys are totally calling the shots now. I know that Eppler said he doesn't see Alvarez playing a big part this year, but I'd be shocked if he's not up here before the rosters are frozen.

Alvarez starting to rake in AAA. Mauricio and Baty will be moved up to AAA next year. What we really need is some of our Pitchers to start performing. Peterson will be fine. He has good stuff.... he just leaves some of his pitches up every once in awhile.

Hope Matt Allen will be back to 100%. That guy has the tools to be special.

Trade deadline pickups:

Naquin- 2 HR night.    2-4

Vogelbach- 1 Hr/ 3 RBI   2-4

yeah, you cant argue with the results from those 2.  Probably a reason I'm typing behind a PC and not playing GM.

The decision to let Diaz go 2 for the first time in his career last night was interesting...

Not gonna bitch too much about it, and it made perfect sense for Diaz to pitch to the heart of the lineup in the 8th, but it would have been nice to turn the 9th over to David Robertson.

First time I really question Buck all year, I really thought they'd turn it over to May or Lugo for the 9th but it worked out.  Check swing on a 3-0 count, lol

I kind of felt the same way, but happy with the W.  I was not thrilled with the 6 out save in game 1 of the series.

Just wondering if maybe Buck was not going to use him both last night and tonight -- as that might have ruled him out for both games on Saturday.  May as well use him for two innings if he was not going to go Friday either way.  He definitely did not look like he had the same electric stuff in the 9th as he did in the 8th.

How can you not root for this guy.

Imagine if he were able to drop 30-40 lbs this off-season? His ability to lengthen his swing would help him reach those outside pitches better. 40 lbs. lighter and he’d be a little more useful in the field and base running

He must be a 5XL

Alvarez still has work to do on the defensive side.  He will not turn 21 until November. When was the last time the Mets had a great catching prospect? Tood Hundley?

St least they turned Ed Hearn into David Cone.

And then David Cone into Ryan Thompson and Jeff Kent (who became a star for the Giants but the Mets traded him for Carlos Baerga).
