Kessman, a Michigan native, played his college football for Pat Narduzzi at the University of Pittsburgh. Kessman went 69-96 (71.9%) on field goals and 134-138 (97.1%) on extra points during his college career. One of his four career missed extra point attempts came in overtime against Boston College last season, costing Pittsburgh the game just moments after he extended the game with a booming field goal at the end of regulation.

He’s never attempted an NFL kick

I would've let him work through his problems in this lost year.

He puts it together and he'll be a monster.

I was thinking the same thing - why not give him the rest of the year to see if he improves? While he was below average, he had the potential to be quite good - this year the W/L didn't matter as much, but hey... NEXT

Maybe it is time to end the Mann experiment as well...

While I want to see Kessman play he’s a lot like Amendola a UFA with a strong leg but even in college not always accurate. You’d think since the Jets went with him so far they’d stick with him and hope he’d develop and improve from actual regular season game experience. Kessman didn’t even get a FGA with LAC during preseason. I’ll give the Jets the benefit of the doubt the coaches see the players during the week and maybe they think Kessman has it over Amendola. You’d have to think they’ll put him on the PS unless they just want to get rid of him. He made 2 of 3 FG’s last week.

well that’s why he got cut after 1 preseason game with the chargers

this is what i mean when people want to cut someone. will the next guy be better? you just dont cut someone cause you want to.

just think there were guys on a Chargers board saying the same sh*t about Kessman that we were about Amandola. should have just finish with Amandola.

I don’t think this is about future potential so much as the coach felt Ammendola’s inconsistency, rather than field position + game situation, makes him rethink whether or not to attempt FGs.

None of the reasons to punt or go for it on 4th should be because their kicker’s almost 50-50 to miss anyway.

Last 6 games he’s made 7 of 12. He’s been given 3 attempts 4x this season but has nailed all 3 none of those times. He’s missed 3 of his last 6 attempts.

That’s just awful. I don’t know that this guy Kessman will be any better, but it’s rarely about abilty: they can all make these kicks but sometimes they just get into a funk for weeks at a time (and Ammendola’s been in one). It’s why it’s not uncommon to see a kicker have a great season and the next year he stinks (or vice versa).

It was cool to see him nailing punts on no notice, but his #1 job is to not leave points on the field and he’s been failing at that. They don’t bench kickers to keep them as backups, so kickers on cheap or short deals are always what’ve you done for me lately (as well they should be).

I would doubt anyone signs Amendola. He’ll probably be on the practice squad and get another chance next training camp. I think the risk of us losing a HOF kicker is pretty low.

Matt Stover, one of the greatest Ks ever, was drafted late (12th round) by the Giants, cut after a year where he didnt play, signed the next year by the Browns, cut, became HOF like K in Baltimore with the Ravens  then finished up with the Colts

Lots of stories just like this in the NFL.  Pat Leahy was drafted by the Cards, cut, resigned and cut again.   The Jets sign him and he got a chance when Howfield was injured in 1974, played until 92.  He ranked third in scoring in NFL history, was the Jets all-time leading scorer, with 1,470 points and scored 100 points or more in seven seasons. Over his career, Leahy completed 71.4% of his field goal attempts and 95.5% of his extra points. He currently ranks 24th on the list of highest NFL career scoring leaders.

K's bouncing around and then finding it is pretty commonplace

I wouldn't be surprised if Ammendola becomes a kickoff specialist who attempts the 67 yard field goals at the end of halves, plus the side benefit of  being the emergency punter. Ammendola will be on someone's roster in 2022.
Guy hasn't hit one from 50+ so far this season, and is ropey from beyond 40.

Agree kickers bouncing around is very common. Becoming all time greats like those you mentioned? Not so common. I think with Amendola we’ll have another chance at him if he continues to develop.

If there's one team that seems to fare worse than us with kickers, it's the Chargers.

Da Bears. Doink,Doink,Doink…..aaaand…..Doink again.

edit: at least the Bears won, it seems like the Jets would’ve lost to the Lions while simultaneously screwing themselves out of draft position.

I don’t know why I enjoyed this long explanation on why missing kicks is bad but I did

So sorting the NFL PK by % you get.

5. Nick Folk

31.  Jason Myers

32. Dan Amnendola

Hopefully some day we pay a good kicker

interesting because myers was a favorite.  folk was a pretty decent kicker but it seemed like he was breaking down and getting injured too much.

You can work on accuracy. You really can't work on distance. He hit the upright on a 55 yarder that would have been good from 65. This is why I said that he would be useful at the end of halves as he could accidentally put it through the uprights on a 60+ yarder.

Which makes it all the more amazing that his best work is years after we let him go. It's not a coincidence that Folk is putting on a clinic in New England. They seem to know the magic formula for kicking the football through the uprights.
