Zach’s “breakout” game

Thanks for posting, I couldn’t watch yesterday’s game. Hard to gauge how he looked from these boards. Most people are either on one side or the other and like everything else in the world today there is no middle ground. 
 

What I THINK happened based on articles I’ve read is he made progress yesterday, he wasn’t  great, but compared to what we have seen from him, it was much improved

His accuracy is very bad, and he came absolutely unspooled in the second half once the Eagles defense woke up, but this was definitely progress.

Yeah I wouldn’t call that a breakout game by any stretch.

Great to see that he was making quick decisions, but he still needs to work on that accuracy, ball placement was not great.

I mean he had 3 TDs yesterday, Trevor Lawrence has 3 TDs in the last 8 weeks. Zach played very well

lol - I wouldn't call it a "breakout" game but definitely improvement and something to build on.

A breakout game IMO would be something like 300+ yards passing, 65+% completions, 3+ TD's, max 1 INT that results in a win in a competitive game.

Breakout is a stretch but hands down by far the best he's looked at any point this entire season was in the first half of this game.  Night and day difference from everything we've seen since week 1.  He was poised, calm, under control.  His footwork was flawless, he was making great reads and being the most decisive I've seen him by far this season.   His ball placement leaves a lot be desired but baby steps, he was by far the best he's looked to date.

That said, the tale of two halves was drastic.  Right back to sloppy footwork, bad mechanics, bailing on pockets and fluttering balls.  Got to get consistent but at least we saw a half of encouraging Football.  Huge change from the norm.

He comes unglued a little easy at this point.

He is definitely one of those kids where success breeds success, but failure breeds failure. 

Have to see whether he ever feels he belongs.

Zach Wilson is the only QB in NFL history not allowed to struggle as a rookie.

I think confidence is everything for these young QBs. You want to build Zach's confidence slowly but surely so that he is playing his best ball this season at the end of the year and ready to take a big step forward in year 2.

With one true receiving threat who is also a rookie.  Journeyman RB's because his true RB who is also a rookie is injured.  Luckily this OL has really stepped up over the course of the year or this season would truly be a disaster because he would definitely suffer another injury before the year is out.

15 out of 25 QB's in league QBR this week.  Breakout game is still very mediocre.  It's progress but that's not hard when you are one of the worst starting QBs in the league.

I need to see at least a top 10 QB performance before the end of the year.

Corey Davis is another concern. Should have been this kids security blanket. He has the walk and the look on his face like "Why did my agent lead me here?".

He definitely seems to press when he knows he needs a have a big drive or make a key play.  I think he's the definition of "gripping the bat too tight" in those situations and it's why he suddenly losses all control of his accuracy and looks to leave the pocket too early in effort to "make a play".  

The bottom line is, he's way to raw to overcome the deficiencies of this roster.  The Jets need damn near perfection out of their offense to be competitive and he's just far far far from that point right now but again, silver linings, he looked like a different player in the first half.

People slammed the Pats for taking "game manager" Jones.  And he's good.  Seems like we're looking for Wilson to show similar skills- quick reads, get the ball out,  be accurate,  etc.

Just to put this in context also.  Mac Jones has had at least 5 top 10 QBR performances this year.  Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields have had 2 each.  

I think QBR is a good stat to base the overall play of a QB off of so I don't think it's too much to ask for Zach to give us a good game in this aspect.

Agreed. I'd like a signature game to feel better going into off season.

He played well.  Not great.  You can win with QB play like that yesterday.  Several teams won with QB play like that yesterday. It’s progress.  He might still be bad in the long run.  He might be good.  But he has made what I’d say is significant progress in certain areas.

The offense lost three starters, forced to roll with GVR and practice squad TEs. Coulda maybe had a little to do with it too.

What makes you think QBR is a good tool?  I thought it had been widely panned by people “in the know” as a pretty terrible metric.  I have only ever heard people complain about it so I haven’t looked at it.  What’s the gist of it?

Break out? That's (likely unconscious and well intentioned) hyperbole that undermines the great insight from the data, which is simply... progress.

How dare he go 3 and out that one time he touched the ball in the 3rd quarter. Then he did nothing to motivate the defense to stop the eagles? Mike White would have gotten CJ Mosley to run faster on defense also. 

Am I doing it right?

I gotta admit Zach Wilson looked really good yesterday...and we can have a surrounding cast , we should not have to worry about QB. We should only have to worry about (in this precise order)

The fact the defence couldn’t get off the field the entire 3rd quarter didn’t help with his lacklustre 2nd half performance but 1st half I liked what I saw.

I'm going by what's available to the common person.  Other than QBR there's no other stat that tells a more full story of how well a QB played that game.  QBR is a stat that's not understood by many and even myself to the full extent but when you look week in and out at the QBs that perform well in this and watch how they perform during certain game situations I believe it to be the best barometer.  

We can talk about the eye test but that is subjective to the person.  My eye test shows me Zach was inconsistent and played average yesterday while others here are saying it was "breakout".
