"Improving"

He was bad his first two games as a starter.  He has gotten incrementally better.  Had a nice pass breakup yesterday, Made several tackles.  Didn't rap up Goedert when he beat Mosley down the seam and bounced off him, terrible play.  But had an INT already as well.

It's basically a rookie year for him, second season, injured last year when he didn't get a TC due to COVID.  He's really just started getting PT.  He's clearly physically talented and yes is incrementally improving.

Yeah, but he's not an all-pro already, so that bothers some posters.

Agreed.

For those who like PFF, Ashtyn Davis is clearly improving. Especially his coverage skills, which is a great sign because the book on him coming out was that he was going to be a good cover safety.

nahhh....hard disagree

He wouldnt start on 31 other squads. Slow, no football instincts, bad in coverage

You’re being a little extreme here. if Saleh can’t groom a kid like Davis, what is he doing here?

He’s the exact type of player we should keep and try to develop. A 3rd round pick with actual athletic ability and upside.

Joe does not seem to want to ever want to come within thirty million of the salary cap.   As a result, we will only ever get the second tier guys, which might not be the end of the world.  But it does put a lot of pressure on the young guys.  He's got to use some of that money to sign Quinnen, though.

He should be better at this point given where he was drafted...was definitely a JD special...a reach of a pick that was baffling on draft day..not a fan.

Say all you want about Ashtyn Davis, but no one ever called him slow.

Was all giddy to make a joke "except his high school teachers" but then looked up his Wonderlic. It was 25.

All his pics on google images look like mug shots, FYI.

A quick glance at the 2022 Jets OTC shows they should be able to reduce their cap spend by the following amounts:

GVR:  $3.5mm

Shaq Lawson:  $9mm (!)

Chuma, Blake Cashman, Cam Clark :  $2.5mm in total.

I am not spending more on Quinnen yet.  Pick up his 5th year option and make him play for it an extension.

So that is an easy $15mm extra cap room.

The Jets can save cap space by cutting McGovern or Fant, but I don't recommend that.

More cap space around the league means more guys will get extended, fewer players available in FA.  A lot of teams with plenty of money to bid against us for marquee players, who will generally want to play for a winner.   We will scoop up some second tier guys and get frustrated as players we covet will either get exrtended or choose to play for perennial playoff teams instead of us.

Pretty much same as it ever was.

Need to hit our draft picks becuase FA is always a downer.

The most lucid post I've seen on this board in a while... Nailed it!

Cap space means you don’t have veterans worth paying, not that you have a clever GM

that may be true but it also means the jets haven't locked any middle to low tier free agents up.  that should leave money available to re-sign the good players they've developed (not that there are many at this point) or re-sign the vets that did come in and make a difference like duvarney.  of course this all gets blown away if they don't have another good draft.

If we have been able to handle last 10 years, or for older guys like us the last 50, I think we are well adjusted enough to handle it.  Although you can't really tell by viewing the board these days.

The jets need the best FA class and the best draft in the division 3 years in a row to compete with the cheaters and bills.

becton, Wilson, Davis and Lawson are the benchmark right now.

just not good enough

It doesnt mean much.  Joe Douglas has told you he is building this through the draft and supplementing with free agency.  We are in no rush here and will not sacrifice the long term success thats coming to overspend in free agency in year 2 of a ground up rebuild.

Expect one of 2 signing just like corey davis and carl lawson.

Its not time to spend in free agency yet. Be patient jet fans.  When we have sustained success like the pats, steelers, ravens etc, you will then see the genius in what Joe Douglas is doing.

Realistically after cutting Shaq Lawson and GVR, a savings of $13M with zero dead money, the actual number should be around $62M.

Which means that JD can spend a whole lotta money on the wrong guys. Think Corey Davis was a wise move? Moses was a good sign as was Duvernay-Tardif, but Davis was a big reach and a big bust. Carl Lawson we'll never know because an achillies injury will rob him of his burst, so he is a lost cause as well.

This is mistaken.

The Jets lead the league in rookie playing time this year by a wide margin. (I think anywhere from 6-9 rookies have started for us basically every week?). We don't want that again in 2022.

This team, and in particular the defense, needs some competent veterans. I want to see an active and aggressive FA period from this front office - particularly on defense.

But Joe can only sign vets who promise not to get hurt. Our defense with Lawson, Joyner and Davis at full strength would be far different.

I agree with you, but you almost have to account for the absurdity that is Jets luck. Our injury luck is sometimes just unfathomable.

He's already signed JFM. Quinnen is our first drafted player up for a contract that is worth keeping and he's from the previous regime.

We are also missing $32m from our salary cap this year because of bad players/contracts from the previous regime as well.

The fact we have a cap hit from Trumaine Johnson that is bigger than the total cap hits of all our CBs combined is just silly.

Lol I know, how is that working?

I like Becton, Hall, Huff, Wilson, AVT, Moore, Carter 1 & 2.  I have hope for Mims and Ashtyn Davis. Then there are cheaper pieces he picked up like JFM, Quincy Williams, Mike White and LDT.

I think he'll go out and get 2 players of the Corey Davis / Carl Lawson caliber and price point.
