One day the Braxton Berrios type of player will not be on this team

No, you can never go back, but as Jets fans, all we have is a past that had some nice moments and maybe a little bit of hope for the future.  The present always sucks (or at least SEEMS to suck at the time).

I never buy jerseys anymore (not just because it seems immature to wear one as an adult) because current players always end up disappointing me.  But if I still wore jerseys, I'd rock a Chrebet (the reason my lame username has an 80 in it), because he can't disappoint me.

Agreed, your lame username is a total embarrassment to the site

Berrios has more value as a punt returner than kick returner.  There isn’t a ton of value in kick returners with the new kick off rules in effect.  Anytime you can take a touch back you should do it.  You get a free 25 yards and no risk of penalty.

Can’t he do both, his first return led to a TD…

Yo listen I've already made my argument about Berrios, but here are a couple of facts.

We plucked this guy off the Patriots practice squad and he was there to replace their slot receivers you know who those guys are right?

Also Belichick likes guys who can play multiple positions and on both sides of the ball.

Remember Ray lucas? How about Brad Smith? Certain guys aren't great at any one thing but they're very good at multiple things that's called a Swiss army knife.

In fact who was the dude during the Herminator era that we took from the defensive line and turned him into a pro bowl Right guard!?

Anyway Berrios shouldn't go anywhere else, we'd be stupid if we didn't resign him. Again he's not a superstar but you hear his name every week he does something good.

Agreed. And he leads the league in a couple categories too. No reason to release him

Teams don't punt against the Jets.

That seems like a joke, but they literally do not.  Berrios has 9 punt returns.  Nobody else on the team has any. There are like 15 guys with more than double that.

As with anything in life, it depends on the price.

Yup.  Partly because it seems opponents are typically starting drives at or near mid-field and almost never go three and out.  It's TDs and FGs so no need to punt.

He has 9 returns and 18 fair catches, so 27 punt receptions. Not sure how many have gone out of bounds / gone for a touchback.

The guy just below him on avg. per return (the Patsie PR) has 23 returns and 4 fair catches ... same total, but more attempted returns.

Not sure how it stacks up with the rest of the league, but that's 2.25 punts per game. Excluding non-catchable ones.

Sometimes we get so caught up in Wilson etc. bring good or how Corey Davis doesn't live up to expectation etc. But the really big things people just dismiss or dont bring up is how bad our roster really is. We have tons of below average jags, that might pop off a play here or there in their 5000 attempts and look good every now and then, but DAMN, we need to upgrade this roster.

Some people want to extend this guys or other like him. He is a scrub player. Sorry no offense but he is not a playing ball anywhere else. I like to think and debate about our line and other positions but drafting well is really the only way to get better. And for Joe D. part in all this he has been upgrading us, this last draft especially.

I can not wait till we no longer have these guys on the squad, they are god damn practice squad guys.

SOme of this is also just bad team management like what we see in Baltimore wiht thier RB's. they had a great back in Tyson - young athletic, good player, and then they run Bell, devaonte and every other run down back in the league to replace him. Why the hell we got COleman, Ty johnson out there all year? It took way too many weeks to get Carter the ball. but look at this kid walter. He should be the back up,

so drafting is great but we also have to lose this hold on to scrub mentality. Braxton should be gone. Rant over. Also i hate Berrios.

We can tease the Jets for trying to feature Berrios early on, but it’s nuts for anyone to say he’s some detriment to a roster. He’s a plus athlete who happens to be a great pro and is universally beloved and respected in the locker room. Most definitely the kind of guy any franchise should want on the roster,

Inside the Numbers | Braxton Berrios Delivering Many Happy Returns

Jets WR Leads NFL in KO-Return Average and Is No. 2* in Punt-Return Average

Dec 11, 2021 at 08:00 AM

As the holidays approach, we could start referring to Braxton Berrios as "The Returns Department." He's taking opponents' gifts of kicks and coverage and turning them into long runbacks for the Jets special teams.

Berrios is arguably the NFL's top dual-threat returner this season. His rousing 79-yard return of the opening kickoff against the Eagles not only set up the Jets for a short opening-drive touchdown but also vaulted him to the top of the league's kickoff returners in his duel with the Ravens' Devin Duvernay."Yeah, they did an incredible job up front and it really did, it parted, it split right down the middle," Berrios said, deflecting kudos for himself into praise for his blockers. "I could've driven a truck through there last week."

The KO return was not only the longest of Berrios' career but the longest by a Jet since Andre Roberts reeled off 99- and 86-yarders, both in December 2018.And it propelled Berrios to a 28.9 yards/return average, first in the league and ahead of Baltimore's Devin Duvernay, in second at 25.5. If BB were to hold that average for the rest of the season, he'd finish fourth in franchise history.Berrios' punt returns, on the other hand, require an asterisk. He has a 13.6-yard average, which would be second in the NFL behind Duvernay's 14.4. However, Braxton doesn't have enough punts to qualify for the league leaders and likely won't have enough by the end of the regular season.

The league requires returners to have 1.25 returns/games played by their teams. With the Jets at 12 games, Berrios would need 15 returns, not including fair catches, to qualify. He has nine returns (and 19 FCs). And he would need 22 returns through 17 games to make the final list. It's doable, but not at the rate at which he and the Jets recently have fair-caught kicks. For team return leaders, though, there is no minimum. ST coordinator Brant Boyer's return teams, with Berrios as the point man, are second in the league in punt-return average and third in kickoff-return average. And Berrios' individual PR average will check in high on the franchise's all-time single-season list. If he maintains his 13.6 for the year, that would be the sixth-best mark. Here are the Jets' top five single-season kickoff return and punt return averages, plus Berrios' numbers this season:

Table inside Article
KO Returner Year Avg Punt Returner Year Avg
Joe McKnight 2011 31.6 Dick Christy 1961 21.3
BobbyHumphery 1984 30.7 Dick Christy 1962 16.7
Andre Roberts 2018 29.4 Santana Moss 2002 16.5
Braxton Berrios 2021* 28.9 Terance Mathis 1990 15.0
Leon Burton 1960 28.7 Andre Roberts 2018 14.1
Brad Smith 2010 28.6 Braxton Berrios 2021* 13.6

Berrios was asked this week if he had a preference for KOs or punts. "I've grown to like kick returns a lot," he said, "but I think punt returns I'll always have an infatuation for. There isn't anything like it.:

Perfect (First) Ten
One last note on Zach Wilson's game against the Eagles. Flipping the script a bit, the rookie QB came out of the gate on fire. He led the first opening-drive TD (of 21 yards after Berrios' return) of his pro career. And during that drive and the two that followed, Zach completed all of his first 10 passes in the game, for 102 yards and the short TD pass to Elijah Moore.

Old note, say some — five games earlier, Mike White completed his first 11 passes in the win over Cincinnati. But Wilson and White are the first two Jets QBs to go 10-for-10 or better to start of a game since Chad Pennington went 14-for-14 at Miami, in a 23-21 loss all the way back in the 2003 season finale.

3. 'Berry' good player: The Jets would be wise to re-sign wide receiver/returner Braxton Berrios before he hits the open market in March. He's one of the fastest players on the team, a slippery slot receiver who is making a Pro Bowl run as a return specialist. He leads the NFL in kickoff average (28.9) and he's third in punt-return average (13.6, but not qualified). His 79-yard kickoff return last week set up a touchdown on the opening possession.

"Whatever, wherever," said Berrios, describing his role and value.

Of the three receivers hitting free agency -- Berrios, Jamison Crowder and Keelan Cole -- Berrios should be the priority because of his versatility. Even if the Jets retain one or more, they need to supplement the position with a draft pick or free agent.

don't understand your argument. I'm not sure what you're talking about chrebet was awesome. Berrios is not as good of a player as he was.

Just as good or better. Look at the sh!t Berrios has throwing to him. And he's not even starting. He's a better KR, a better PR. And just as clutch:

"Wilson has 3 completions, ALL to Berrios"

STFU about Berrios. He's the Jets only consistent player, wherever he plays.

I don't understand why there needs to be a comparison between Wayne Chrebet and Berrios.

I love the way Berrios is playing this year, and he certainly is a keeper.  But he absolutely not having the career that Wayne Chrebet did.  If you are comparing the two, Wayne Chrebet wins that comparison 100 out of 100 times.  Clutch receiver who never dropped the ball, and made the tough catches over the middle of the field.  3rd down and you need a receiver to step up and convert, you throw to Wayne Chrebet.

I guess I'm just not "with it".  Thanks for making me understand.  In the meantime, isn't Chrebet in the "Ring of Honor" for the Jets? The chances of Berrios getting on the ring of honor and like the chance that the Easter Bunny will run for President of the United States, and win.

He already did.

Anyway, Berrios...forget it.

I think the issue boils down to people searching for guys "to build the team around."  No, you don't build your team around Braxton Berrios, but you are happy to have him and keep him around it he doesn't break the bank.  Same went for guys like Cotchery who was maybe a little further up the totem pole.

It's even worse with QBs.  Every borderline starter is touted as "franchise QB".
