My guess is that it's drawing a kind of parallel to animals in the wild.  Like when lions kill and eat an animal, they're surviving.  The football player equivalent of that is winning games ("We're gonna eat!")  So the idea when players do that is that they're saying they're going to win games.

This is just my theory though.  Maybe I've just seen too many nature documentaries?
