Now that we're officially talking about moving Becton to RT it's fair for those of us (like me) who defended the pick to admit Wirfs should have been the pick. "Higher potential" doesn't mean much when you aren't playing.

I always suspected the Jets really wanted Wills, who could have been a left or right tackle, but the Browns scooped him up right before our pick.

Personally, I wanted Wills, Wirfs or Becton - I really didn't want Thomas.

With hindsight, especially with how well Fant has played at LT, Wirfs absolutely should have been the pick.

He meant tag a certain poster on the boards ... not tag Berrios! :D

Oh, good, cause I nearly fell out of my chair.......that, or I thought maybe he didn't know "Kick Returner" isn't actually a position in the NFL when it comes to this, Berrios is a WR.  Whew!

You want to pay Berrios the average of the top 5 WR's in the NFL?

No, but he’d buy him fish tacos and give him a night he would never forget  no matter   how much therapy he got.

Pay the man, and even overpay the man. An "overpay" of someone like Braxton Berrios is infinitely better than overpaying guys who aren't even on the team anymore. If he's worth $5 million a year and he asks for $6 million, give him $6.5 million. This type of "overpay" is not what hampers the team. The extra $3 million added onto his contract is not breaking the bank. Ridiculous contracts like the ones given to CJ Mosely hamper the team even with Mosely playing well.

Technically, you CAN tag a Special Teams player (see below, from Overthecap.com).  It just never happens.  Largely because:  1) Generally it makes little sense to franchise tag a Kicker, Punter, or Long Snapper, and 2) The guys who might deserve a franchise tag, I.E. Kick Returners and Punt Returners, probably can't be franchise tagged as special teamers.

But if we COULD tag Berrios as a special teamer instead of a WR, his $5.5M franchise tag value would be a great price.  That might be where spotrac came up with his $5.9M per projected worth.

2022 Projected Franchise and Transition Tenders

Position Franchise Tag Transition Tag
QB $28,583,000 $25,641,000
DE $20,186,000 $16,622,000
WR $19,127,000 $16,740,000
LB $17,417,000 $14,882,000
CB $17,293,000 $14,903,000
DT $16,888,000 $13,596,000
OL $16,698,000 $14,997,000
S $13,543,000 $11,265,000
RB $12,523,000 $10,140,000
TE $10,834,000 $9,331,000
ST $5,469,000 $4,980,000

You’re a lot better at this type thing then I am, but he’s also Wilson’s security blanket WR. I don’t see him settling for $6m, do you?
I said the other day I’d want 9-10 mil per if I were him. With the WR tag at 16, I think that’s a fair number for a dual threat like Berrios.

Special Teamer  is, I believe by the CBA, limited to kickers, punters and long snappers who play no other positions.

All Kick Returners are officially WR's or (very rarely) RB's or DB's.  Not Special Teamers.

I could be wrong, and I'll be honest, I'm not resea4rching the language of the CBA to prove it right or wrong, lol.

It's all a matter of what he and his agent can get on the open market.  Douglas doesn't need to be negotiating against himself.  Can Berrios' agent convince another team out there he's worth $9-10M per, even after the season he had?  I doubt it.

Even high-end slot receivers don't tend to make THAT much.  I think Tyler Boyd is the highest-paid pure slot guy on the market, and he "only" makes $10.8M per.  Randall Cobb is next at $9M, then Cole Beasley at $7.25M.

Just look at what happened with Jamison Crowder.  He took a paycut to come back here, of all places, because he knew his value was limited on the open market.  And yes, I know he's older and doesn't provide much value on specials, but you get the point.  Berrios' value as a receiver would have to drive his price point.  His versatility would be secondary to that.

But yes, $6M is now a low price for him.  I think $6.0-$6.5M is the starting point, with $7-7.5M being the top end of what he could get here or elsewhere.  I don't think anyone is giving him $8M or more per.

I think you're 100 % right on that, otherwise a high-end KR/PR (like Devin Hester) would probably have gotten franchise tagged by now.  I don't think we've ever seen that happen.

It will be a really bad look if JD let’s him walk, but it’s not easy to put a value on a player like this.
I would’ve thought he’s a 6-7m WR alone for this team, but the All Pro KR thing has to add something?

Douglas won't get played.  I imagine he'll want him back AND will simultaneously have a good idea of what the market is dictating Berrios' worth to be.

My guess is Berrios' agent finds out he maxes out as about a $7M a year player, so Douglas ends up paying right at that number or slightly higher.  If it goes as high as $8M, I won't be thrilled with that but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

He's a high quality special teams guy and a #4 or #5WR...

He should be paid accordingly.  Make him an aggressive but fair offer for that type of player and let him go out and beat it.

You two both make very good points, but at some point the Jets need to reward the players who actually play well here.

Another thing none of us have mentioned is how bad a team we are. Like it or not we have to pay a bit of a premium to retain or acquire FAs. If I were Berrios and I had comparable offers from us and a playoff level team, I’m going to the team that is a winner, I’m not signing with the doormat.

BTW @FidelioJet Berrios is no way the #4 or 5 WR on this team. It’s unfair to say that.
