MOBILE, Ala. -- New York Jets offensive lineman Cameron Clark, who missed the season after suffering a spinal-cord injury in training camp, is ending his football career, his agent told ESPN.

"Based on the advice of Dr. Andrew Hecht, a prominent orthopedic surgeon at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, Cameron will not be able to continue to play football for the New York Jets," Clark's agent, Alan Herman, told ESPN.

Clark, 24, was told he would risk paralysis if he continued to play.

A 2020 fourth-round pick from Charlotte University, Clark was injured Aug. 3 at the Jets' training facility in Florham Park, New Jersey. He was motionless for several minutes on the ground after going down during an 11-on-11 period. The 6-foot-4, 308-pound guard was taken via ambulance to a local hospital.

At the time, the Jets called it a spinal-cord contusion, saying he would make a full recovery.

Clark's career ends without him ever taking a snap in a regular-season game. His rookie year, called a developmental year by the organization, was interrupted by a shoulder injury. He went into the 2021 training camp as a backup, fighting for a roster spot.

Good for Clark that he is able to walk away and live a healthy, full life.

More bad news for a bad draft class.  I think the best way to look at the 2020 draft class is that it was Mac's class, JD really did not start until last year, and that JD and Saleh have through the 2023 to put a greatly improved football team on the field.

Sad news but I'm glad that he got the right advice and didn't suffer any further long term, more serious injuries.

Just a quick glance at contract numbers, looks like he earned about $2 million over his first two years, including signing bonus.  As a fourth round pick, I don't think the next two years are guaranteed, but I'm not sure how that works with someone retiring because of a football related injury.

Hopefully he had the right people around him and that $2 million was managed well, which would set him up nicely for future financial success.

Wish him nothing but the best!

Trust me, that's a much bigger problem for these guys than people think.

Shame.

The 2020 class:

Becton - underachieving/injured

Mims - underachieving/injured

Ashtyn Davis - injured/middling starter

Zuniga - Bust so far

Perrine - JAG/Doesn’t fit scheme

James Morgan - Cut

Cam Clark - injured/retired

Hall - solid #2 starting CB

Mann - a fine punter for his pint size

That is why drafts are a crap shoot.  And why if you can find a GM that can hit on 50 percent of the players consistently you keep them.  Do we have such a GM?  We shall see after another draft.  This one didn't work out so well.  We will have to see in 2022 what 2021 looks like.  Are they improving?  Are the 2022's contributing?  We shall see.
