Should the Jets hire someone to replace Cavanaugh?

Jon Embree was let go by the 49ers earlier this week.  He was the Assistant Head Coach and Tight Ends coach.  He had a hand in developing Kittle, and Tony Gonzalez a while back.  He was also an assistant under both Shanahans (Mike and Kyle) so there is familiarity with the system.  Maybe there is an opportunity to join his son on the Jets coaching staff?  He would bring a veteran coaching presence that would be very valuable for the Jets coaching staff.

With Cavanaugh leaving, what coach should the Jets bring in to help with the offense / Wilson?  Or are they set?

The Jets’ offensive staff will look a little different in 2022.

Senior offensive assistant Matt Cavanaugh won’t return next season, according to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes. Cavanaugh only signed a one-year contract to join Robert Saleh’s staff after Greg Knapp died before the 2021 season. Cavanaugh has 30 years of coaching experience in the NFL and previously served as the Jets’ quarterbacks coach under Rex Ryan from 2009-2012.

Zach Wilson’s personal QB coach John Beck likely won’t return either, per Hughes. Beck joined the Jets staff in Week 8 this past season in a move Saleh called a “win-win for everybody.” Beck worked exclusively with the quarterbacks during the season. Hughes added that the team has not completely closed the door on Beck, but the expectation is that he will return to his private coaching business.

The plan is for quarterbacks coach Rob Calabrese to take on more responsibility, per Hughes. New York will likely hire a quality control coach as well.

Interesting that the Jets want the QB coach, Calabrese, to take on more responsibility for actually coaching the Quarterbacks.

I did wonder what he was doing last season, when Cavanaugh and latterly Beck were most often the guys talking to Wilson on the sideline.

From the official NYJ site.

hes an East Islip kid

Rob Calabrese begins his first season with the New York Jets after joining Robert Saleh's staff as the quarterbacks coach on January 21, 2021. For Calabrese, he joins the Jets after two years as an offensive quality control coach in Denver working with the quarterbacks.

Over the last two seasons, Calabrese worked with a number of quarterbacks as the Broncos were forced to use six different quarterbacks as a result of injury. During the 2019 season, Calabrese's first in the NFL, rookie quarterback Drew Lock started the final five games, compiling a 4-1 record, while Joe Flacco, who started the first eight, completed 65.3% of his passes, the best mark in his 13-year NFL career.

Prior to joining the Broncos, Calabrese coached college football at Wagner College (2016-18) and his alma mater, Central Florida (2014-15). At Wagner, he helped direct an offense that averaged 28 points per game in 2018, an almost seven point per game improvement from the previous season, and the school's best average in nine seasons. At UCF, he worked with the team's quarterbacks and wide receivers as a graduate assistant and was selected as one of 30 coaches for the NCAA-AFCA Future Football Coaches Academy. Before his start in college coaching, Calabrese spent a season at Oviedo (FL) HS coaching quarterbacks.

A quarterback and wide receiver at Central Florida, Calabrese finished his college career passing for 1,276 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushing for 494 rushing yards and two touchdowns. A three-year starter at East Islip (NY) HS, he earned the Boomer Esiason Award as Suffolk County's top quarterback as a junior and senior and broke Esiason's school records for career passing yardage (3,992) and touchdowns (34).

Calabrese and his wife, Taylor, have a son, Kayden.

Everyone on the staff was a "rookie" last year.  So its not surprising if some needed time

to develop into their roles.  We saw the drastic improvement in LaFleur's play calling over

the season.  Maybe it took Calabrese the entire year to step into his role

Jets had a lot of people in Zach’s ear last year. It might be time to consolidate the amount of coaches directing him.

I thought the same. I also thought that it would become a classic case of "too many chefs spoiled the soup." I was wrong, Zach played better once Beck joined and i am a little disappointed (not devastated) that Beck probably wont be back. As a side note, I dont think fans and people in the business gave Wilson credit for overcoming losing Knapp in such a tragic way right before the season started. I dont care if they knew each other for years or just a couple of months like they did. Purely from a Jets perspective, a 21 year old kid in Wilson losing his hired mentor and coach to lean on is (work) life changing.

Probably exactly what any QB does.  The Jets didnt actually replace poor Knapps title officially our of respect.  Now he has the title as well as the responsibilities that go with it

It’s possible Calabrese was hired and paired with Knapp who would also serve as an experienced counter-balance. Meaning Calabrian maybe in a stretch role, with Knapp as oversight. Obviously that didn’t happen, so Cavanaugh and Beck were mitigation strategies.

Hopefully, he's a guy who can be groomed as a future OC in the event that ML eventually lands a HC job somewhere.

This is very important and can be done without an extra "voice in Zach's ear".  Having someone like Embree who the original poster mentioned be groomed for a future role in this offense is very smart.  You do NOT want ZW having to learn new terminology etc at some point in the next few seasons.

Greg Olsen is also out as the OC in Oakland.  He doesnt have much experience in this offense but did work for McVay for a year and could be brought in to learn the system as a proven Offensive Assistant
