NY Jets reportedly working on an extension for OT George Fant

The NY Jets were treated to a breakout year from offensive tackle George Fant in 2021. Filling in for the injured Mekhi Becton, Fant put together easily the best season of his career and finished as legitimately one of the best players on the roster.

Fant was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal year for Gang Green as the veteran offensive tackle forced his way into the team's plans despite being an afterthought in the summer.

Now, following his standout 2021 season, the Jets are reportedly looking to keep Fant around long-term.

Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline reported earlier in the week that the Jets were "trying to extend Fant’s contract" this offseason. This comes after head coach Robert Saleh indicated that Fant and Becton would compete for the starting left tackle job this summer.

And as far as early indications go, it appears to be Fant's job to lose, at least according to Pauline.

The NY Jets are looking to keep George Fant around past this season

The 29-year-old Fant is entering the final year of a three-year, $27 million contract he signed with the team prior to the 2020 season. He's set to carry a cap hit of just over $11 million in 2022, a figure that suddenly looks cheap given how well he played this past year.

 

Fant's first season in New York was underwhelming, to say the least. The former Seattle Seahawks swing tackle finished the year with a 61.6 Pro Football Focus grade that ranked 64th out of 79 qualified offensive tackles.

His lackluster play was the reason the Jets went out and signed veteran Morgan Moses after the draft. Moses competed with Fant for the starting right tackle job in camp, a competition that Fant actually won.

But once Becton went down, Fant was shifted over to his natural position at left tackle for the first time in his Jets career. The results were spectacular.

Fant allowed just 18 pressures in 15 games which were the third-fewest among all qualified offensive tackles in the NFL, behind just Tristan Wirfs and Andrew Whitworth. He was one of the best pass-blocking tackles in football this past season.

Fant isn’t stupid. He just proved he can be a LT in this league. And will want to get paid accordingly. If we pay him like a LT it will tell us a lot about their plans with Becton. Likely him moving positions.

Becton's status will be determined with this off season acquisitions. I think the LT position is already settled with Fant hence a fake OTA competition.

OMG give it a rest. Plus I don’t think Becton cares. He’s got some money, cool necklace and time to do whatever  he wants. I don’t see him coming back to the Jets and contributing consistently. He’ll be traded for a 2nd or 3rd, if not he’ll be that guy who simply can’t stay healthy spending the rest of his rookie contract as a back up due to durability issues. Personally think he would be pretty happy with that.

Fant was playing for his career/paycheck in 2021. Although he seems to be mature,  you never know what happens after a guy gets paid. Hopefully his play wont slip after this payday coming up.

Berrios is everything Douglas and Saleh want in a player.  He will get a fair contract from Joe and be here a long time.  Hes a top priority for Joe D.

Jets have gotten to know Fant and I imagine they know his personality and if they are taking steps to resign him they are convinced that he isn’t another Wilkerson a take the money and coast player.

Yeah, but at some point, when guys play well, you have to pay good players.  Fant has played well and earned the extension.  He is a guy who had to fight for several years to earn a starting role.  I think he will be fine after we pay him (assuming we do).

Immediately before the 2021 NFL season ended for the New York Jets, I reported the team’s offensive coaches wanted to move forward with Fant as their left tackle. Many of these coaches said they were ready to move on from Becton, the first-round pick from the 2020 NFL Draft that’s not been very dependable as of late.

Today, NFL beat writers for the New York Jets reported from the Senior Bowl the news that there will be an open competition between Fant and Becton for the left tackle spot next season — this according to head coach Robert Saleh.

And while that may be true, NFL sources close to the situation tell me that Fant has been informed the left tackle position is his to lose. I have confirmed the rumor that the Jets are trying to extend Fant’s contract as the NFL veteran enters the final season of the three-year deal he signed in 2020.

Becton was a topic of conversation this weekend during Shrine Bowl practices. News was reported that Becton weighed over 370 pounds in December as he continued to recover from a knee injury he sustained during the first game of the NFL season.

Two sources — one in Vegas at Shrine practice and another here today in Mobile — told me Becton was actually tipping the scales at over 400 pounds by the end of the season.

Many still believe the former first-round pick, who showed so much potential in 2020, will be able to turn it around and get back on the field in proper condition. But it seems the Jets continue to lose faith in their former first-round pick.

Yup.  If it is true, this kid has to grow up and get his priorities in order.  He may have been able to get through college just by being bigger and stronger than the guy he is lined up across from, but he needs to take his craft seriously.  I am sure the Jets have told him what weight they want him at.  He needs to do whatever it takes to make sure he is in shape and right where the Jets want him to be when he shows up for OTAs.

It would be such a shame, and a total waste of talent, if he busts after the promise he showed as a rookie.

This makes a ton of sense. Assuming it's true, Becton can slot into RT and prove he belongs...
