Sam Darnold tidbit...

Recommended Posts

So, my question is...did we ruin Sam Darnold with poor coaching which includes not surrounding him with players like we're trying to do with Wilson or was he just another USC QB that joins a long list of quarterbacks out of that school that didn't make it in the NFL?

The Carolina Panthers parted ways with Cam Newton to try their luck with Teddy Bridgewater. As it didn't work out, they paid him to leave and get Sam Darnold, who didn't get the job done either. They brought back Cam and just remembered why they let him go in the first place, and so it goes.

The Panthers put together a solid defense and had some promising assets on the other side of the field as well. But Christian McCaffrey's never-ending injury woes and their QB situation held them back last year.

Matt Rhule and company will reportedly try to put an end to those struggles in the offseason, orchestrating yet another quest to find a starting caliber QB. As it turns out, they're even willing to absorb Kirk Cousins' mammoth deal to get that done.

Southern Cal produces College QBs, not NFL QBs.  Darnold was hyped.  We just can’t draft QBs in the modern era.  Sad but true

An even MORE important question:

Who cares?  He isn't here anymore.  Let's work on a different method in helping this new QB.  We will offer stability within the franchise, allow him a couple of years while we build an acceptable level of talent, and see if he has it.  If he doesn't, we will find another QB, and already have a better level of talent around when we start with him.

Why would the Vikings want to trade Cousins?  Who would they get to replace him.

If today's rumors are to be believed, and Rogers is a gonner from Green Bay, that division belongs to Minnesota.  They could end up with a very good record playing those stiffs and at least one home playoff game.

Darnold is getting paid $19 million????

That is not ruined. That is the stuff of legend.

Dude is going to be retired and “Surfin USA” after this year.  What I really think he wanted to do way more than play QB in the NFL.  Although in all fairness the idiots running the Jets at the time did him absolutely No favors.

His regression, he played way better his last 4 games of his Rookie year than Anytime since most likely is because he just stopped wanting it.

Rumors are Watson. He just put them on his list but can’t see him playing for at least a year.

The Panthers are willing to eat Cousins $33M while paying Darnold $19M?  $52M on the QB position?

Who's going to trade for Darnold at that number?

Interesting.  Is there an anonymous source revealing that when the Jets sent Sam Darnold to Carolina in the trade he had Mike Maccagnan packed in his luggage?  For $52M on the QB position you should have Patrick Mahomes under Center, not a combination of Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold.

Jets fans are endlessly concerned about the cap

we talk about the 9 mil berrios wants like it's coming out of our own pockets

meanwhile, David Tepper is the league's richest owner and doesn't GAF about the cap

turns out the cap is a con

some owners are going to throw money at winning, even if it doesn't work

meanwhile Woody just wants to keep the lights on

Darnold wasn't great to start with, but instead of helping him with his potential we made it permanent, which I sometimes worry will happen with ZW too.

The difference is that Wilson has balls and competitiveness.

Darnold is a listless cotton ball.

We're stuck on this narrative I see.

Hey, maybe we see if Carolina want to send us Darnold and their first for like a 5th? Helps take 19M off the books, and gives us a back-up quarterback for a year and an first rounder! :D

THEN!! Minnesota can trade Cousins to Carolina!!

THEN!! We can trade the 10th to Minnesota for their 12th and a 3rd rounder for Minnesota to jump over Washington and pick up Malik Willis or Pickett.

I may be sleep deprived... I'm going to bed...

Ah yes, the cycle of JN's most popular blithering tale: Jets' failures must be destined for greatness with another team, until that never actually comes to fruition, which is then still entirely the Jets fault, even in their absence.

It certainly can't ever possibly be that the reality of the player somehow aligns with all of the evidence surrounding their play.

Because Cousins is little more than a glorified JAG or should I say glorified JAQB. He is good enough to get you the playoffs and no further. And he comes with a hefty price tag. Minny should have stuck with Case Keenum. But getting back to Cousins sooner or later a team has to start beating teams outside if their own division if they expect to make it to the big dance. And Cousins has proven he can't deliver the goods. That's why Minny wants to unload Kirk. Even if it means taking a step back in their overall program. But then again if Carolina out does themselves in the stupidity contest and takes Cousins complete with his Cap Hit Minny could sign Garroppolo and fortify several other positions and still have money left over.

The DeShaun Watson saga is just going to drag 0n-and-0n. His career is ticking away and an ever growing number of people think the dude may never play another snap in the NFL. Even if he beats the odds he could return as a shell of the player that left.

I think Darnold, in hindsight, was a very overrated prospect. Ever since Rodgers and Mahomes popularized throwing from odd arm angles, the media thinks those are the traits that trump everything else. Again, it comes down to can the QB sit in a tight pocket, go through his reads quickly, make the right read and throw an accurate ball. That's the foundation. If you look at Darnold's college tape through that prism, you see a lot of holes in his game.

Funny thing is the last Jets player to actually go on and reach anything close to “greatness” was James Farrior. My favorite was Victor Hobson. The dude was a multi year starter for us and he was downright awful. Some reason fans liked him but he was just terrible. Pats brought him into their TC and people had meltdowns of how he’d haunt us and be a multi year pro bowler. Dude was cut before the regular season and never played another down again in the NFL. We are so condition led to think our garbage is actually good and we’re so snakebitten as a franchise that it somehow makes the player not do as well. The truth is the snakebite is so much further up the chain of command, we just haven’t had good players on this team, period. What looks good to us only looks good because all we have to compare it to is poor. FFS we compare our current QB prospects to Chad Pennington as if Chad was any good. Like holy hell, there’s people that still clamor that Chad should be our QB coach. My God this is a really sh*tty franchise ??

Pat Kirwin made an interesting point yesterday regarding the Vikings and Cousins on Movin the Chains. Thinks they should talk to a few teams that have QB's in last year of big deals, like The Colts or Browns, and see if they basically would do a QB swap. Kinda " you take my cap problem I'll take yours" type of thing. Could always tweak it a bit.
