Popular Post BeaconJet
I said it when the NHL got Evander Kane for gambling... how do these guys not have one of their "people" with an account placing bets for them? Part of me finds it amusing that he'd face less time off if he punched his girlfriend in the face, than for gambling on his team to win, but rules are rules and he violated the terms of the CBA, assumedly? Even if the NFL is in bed with gambling, and you cant watch a game without being bashed over the head by gambling ads.

The amount of money these players make these days means they don't have to gamble to get rich. They are rich. Gambling can ruin the sport completely. On a related note, I am not at all comfortable with the NFL embracing betting, they should at most tolerate it and no revenue to the NFL or to gambling sites should come from any relationship between the 2, including ads during football games. I agree with this completely. I have a son in college and he tells me about all the kids hooked on the gambling sites. You listen to the local ny/nj radio stations and its all ads for gambling. And they aren't shy about using the "drug dealer technique" which is to give you a free taste and offer ridiculous first bets like "If either team scores a 3 pointer, you win!" (site credit to keep gambling). Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel did a piece on it and its destroying people and their families. Suicides among gamblers are up, revenues for the companies are through the roof, and the NFL allows it with a nod and a wink. It's awful and getting worse.

As in anything there are degrees. Going to the casino and dumping half your paycheck every weekend is one thing, buying a $10 box at a Super Bowl party is another. Fantasy football is an upfront "bet" that lasts an entire season and is more about bragging rights than cash. Very different animal.
Joe Willie White Shoes
1 hour ago, Jolot said: Do you play fantasy football for money ? Then it’s gambling. Stop the nonsense. Fantasy football is not considered gambling under most state laws. That is just the facts. Believe what you want, but NFL players can play fantasy football for money because it is not gambling under the law(or in the eyes of the NFL). The answer lies in the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act passed by Congress. The law, which arose as a response to online gambling sites PartyPoker, Poker Stars and others, shut down online wagering in the United States. However, it also left an exemption which covered fantasy sports games, and games of an educational or skill-based nature. That exemption states the following: “…has an outcome that reflects the relative knowledge of the participants, or their skill at physical reaction or physical manipulation (but not chance), and, in the case of a fantasy or simulation sports game, has an outcome that is determined predominantly by accumulated statistical results of sporting events, including any non-participant’s individual performances in such sporting events …” In other words, daily fantasy sports games (and season fantasy leagues for that matter) are considered a “game of skill” and determined not by chance but by adherence to statistical analysis. Dcat
A post from a buddy of mine down in D.C.: I was listening to DC101 this morning. They had a caller who was a direct employee with an area sports team (Ravens, Redskins, Nationals, Wizards etc...) but he would not directly disclose. He said even their hourly admin employees are not allowed to bet on the sport to which they are employed. The guy said, every player, employee name is in some database which monitors sports gambling. They said the moment an account was created with (Calvin Ridley) it would be immediately flagged and investigated. They said that they the players, sports employees etc... are given yearly HR and conduct meetings on how its not allowed. Ridley just did not care and did it anyway. Snell41
Thank ******* God, this will quiet down the idiots that wanted to give up a 1st for him. This guy quit on his team for a full year because he was sad. He’s has every right to be sad or whatever he’s going through, mental illness is very real and needs to be addressed more and more. But the NFL is a billion dollar business with tons of people’s jobs on the line every day. That alone makes the investment incredibly stupid. This just put the cherry on top of all the stupidity. All the people clamoring for Ridley before this should stand in front of a mirror and punch themselves in the face.
