The Jets have plucked away an assistant from one of the NFL’s most aggressive teams last season to be their new game management coach.

Head coach Robert Saleh has hired former Chargers offensive assistant Dan Shamash to be the Jets’ Situational Football/Game Management Coordinator, The Post’s Brian Costello reported Tuesday.

Jets after one season to become the Cardinals’ defensive line coach.

A New York native with a background in analytics, Shamash spent the last five years with the Chargers. Last season under head coach Brandon Staley, the Chargers had the third-most fourth-down attempts in the NFL (34) and converted on an NFL-high 22 of them.

Shamash, who overlapped with Saleh with the Jaguars from 2014-16, played football at Carnegie Mellon and later had brief stops with the Jets as a coaching assistant and consultant, according to his LinkedIn page.

For years and years and years I railed against the uber conservative coaching in this league.  When guys like parcells started to go for it more the league and analysts were aghast.

But it has gone so far the other way it has gone too far.  Some of these analytics are based on going for it pretty well every time and the % say you will be successful but then we are getting teams stupidly going for it from their own 30.

We also have good excuses as to why to gamble and leave the best fg kicker who ever played on the sidelines an thus losing two games and out of the playoffs.

Also, hired Ben Wilkerson to replace Jake Moreland as Assistant Oline Coach.  Former LSU Center.  Had same job with Giants last year.

Sounds good, but it would be more entertaining if we could make other words and phrases out of his last name

No QB sneaks on 4th and 2, please.

They didn't call for a QB sneak. The play was supposed to be an end around by Berrios. The play call had an option for Wilson to call his own number. The call was bad for giving Zach the option, but they did not call for a sneak.

I am aware. No excuse to give the option with 2 yards to go.

Seems so simple, except for Bart Scott and the SNY crew

Zach needs to be able to make smart decisions.  Let's hope it was a good learning experience for him and the game will slow down for him next year.  But we can't try to neuter our QB if we want to seriously contend for a title.

He is not making that mistake a second time. It wasn't a good look, but it will be a learning experience in a game that didn't have playoff implications. There will be a time when he needs to call his own number, and hopefully he will know what to do when that time comes.

It's actually more than just a QB option.

Wilson didn't exactly have an option.  The call was - end around - unless you see a certain look - if you do then go to a sneak.

The option to run was exactly what the D was showing.  Wilson did precisely what he was coached to do.  He didn't call his own number - he did what they play called for...

Certainly looks like a dude who's a perfect fit for a job for which the qualifications largely include, "plays a lot of Madden and is good at it."

It's how it rolls in 2022. Geeks and nerds are hot commodities.
