This is a solid signing. I might have preferred hurst but I like it. He's immediately our best TE since keller with his 49/493/5 td last year.  As sad as that is ?

Now go get McBride in the draft and make this TE room studly with yeboah developing as well.

Meh- disappeared in the playoffs and not a big threat in the regular season either.  Maybe better in our system?

He had a badly sprained knee in the playoffs and fought to get healthy enough to play in the SB.

CJ is a good football player.  He can block, catch the football, and help in the red zone.

That exactly is what the Jets need…

There are like 4/5 difference makers at tight end.  That was never going to happen for us in free agency.

And once the cowboys decided to tag Schultz the next best option was a guy like Uzomah who is still a huge upgrade over every tight end we've had the last decade .

And I still think they draft a guy on the hopes of finding that rare difference maker.

He was PFF's 9th rated availalble FA TE. I agree he's an upgrade, but I think huge is a stretch. He had decent numbers last year, but that was with Burrow throwing to him and he was probably the 5th option on offense behind Chase, Higgins, Boyd and Mixon.

You can only buy the items still on the shelf I guess.

Its not a bad signing, just meh. I woulda done a 1-2 year deal with a guy like Everett and put more investment in draft/youth - over the moolah he got. Good redzone target tho.

Like Vacchiano said, all the top potential FA TEs got tagged... so Uzomah is as good as you were going to get this week.

exactly.

what did people hear think we were going to sign? Tony Gonzales?

we got to draft a good TE.

I honestly don’t know but I think we may still be drafting  a guy. I mean, kinda still have to, right?

Yup...which is why this move makes total sense.

Fans seem to love McBride but there are a number of quality TE's in this draft - many "experts" have a couple of them ranked higher than McBride.  They'll probably all be there at 38.

More I've thought about this...more I'd prefer a Mike Gesicki type TE...like Lively.  Now after the Uzomah signing.  I think Uzomah-Lively compliment each other well.

Here's why I'm cool with this, the Jets are always planning on adding one in the draft anyways.  Sure they could double dip, but you want to have all options in the table come draft day.  Uzomah helps alleviate the panic a bit about double dipping at TE.  Granted, you could argue they still should double dip.

Nah, he's better than both lol

Sure. He’s better but not much better and he’s not much different and this doesn’t fix TE.  He’s had 2 mediocre seasons in 7 years and he’s rarely healthy.

disappeared?

against LV - he had 6 catches for 64 yards and a TD

against Tenn - he had 8 catches for 71 yards

he sprained his MCL in the 1st quarter against KC and shocked most people by even suiting up in the SB, where he chipped in with a couple of catches.

he's a solid addition given the FA class and all the other TEs who were tagged or otherwise signed.  and he played on a team with chase, higgins and boyd, so cincy had plenty of other options, which needs to be accounted for in his counting stats.  jets could only pray they had a WR1-3 like cincy.

given the insane contracts being handed out, he's a solid addition.

He's a hold the fort guy while helping pick 35/38 grow.

He supposed to be a solid run blocker too, which seems to be a real focus of this team right now.

How many tight ends in the NFL wouldn't be the #5 option on that team?

And there are definitely zero free agent TEs That would be a better option than those 5 guys.
