Chris Rock may have made a bad joke but his biggest error was in not reading the body language of an enraged Will Smith.
During the slap, Smith has good left hand position. He’s ready to defend a punch or follow up with the left. Smith does have too tall a position that would make his defense much more difficult for a takedown.
This would allow Rock to either preemptively or as the assault begins to shoot under for an easy takedown following up with some ground and pound or a submission. Rock could’ve also easily clinched as well followed by the same sequence.
He could have also fled to go hide behind a security guard. It all starts with awareness.
Overall a really poor performance by Rock.

I understand the thought process behind a level-change for wrestling but if the guy is wearing a jacket and you aren't grabbing the **** out of those lapels for a throw then you're really missing out on an opportunity for some fun. Double legs are great but if you have the chance to launch the dude you do it to prove a point.

Nah this took the cake. This was The Oscars - millions upon millions watching this worldwide. I feel bad for Chris Rock although he went a bit to far. You just can’t mess with a person’s partner. But you can’t do what Will Smith did. That was just psychotic. Poor Chris Rock was in shock after he slapped him. He stepped back thinking more slapping was coming. And Rock is like half the size of Will Smith. Just bizzaro.

Did you watch?

Start with Smith apologizing, then go to all the comments by others, none of which agree with what youre saying.

Watch it live?  Lol, no.  I wouldn’t waste my time watching an award show.  I saw replays though.

as for your justification, none of it means anything.  Its hollywood, they have scripted far more challenging scenes.

I don’t get the heel digging on this. With Hollywood you just assume everything is scripted and work backwards. Ditto reality television. It’s what they’re literally paid to do.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in a statement issued on Monday condemned the actions of best actor winner Will Smith after the "King Richard" star stormed the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock in the face during Sunday's Oscars ceremony.

"The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night's show," the statement said. "We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."
Earlier on Monday, CNN learned that Academy leadership "strongly considered" removing Smith from the Oscars telecast after the incident, according to a source close to the situation.
"Academy leadership strongly considered removing Will Smith from last night's broadcast following the incident. There were immediate discussions but the Academy decision makers were seated in various spots in the Dolby Theater and couldn't mobilize to make a decision before he won best actor," the source said.

Smith apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees during his best actor acceptance speech.
Following the ceremony, the Academy Awards tweeted a short statement about the on-stage incident that read: "The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world."
At least a dozen members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Oscars, met virtually on Monday morning to discuss a response to Smith slapping Rock, according to two sources with knowledge of the meeting.
The meeting was described as "heated" and "divided." There was no agreement on further action, according to the sources.
The dozen members who met on their own volition and are being described as influential and recognizable members of the Academy, including actors and directors. The group does not have any disciplinary power, but they are considered high profile enough that the Board of Governor's for the Academy could be influenced in any response they may have.
Some people on the call said the Academy mishandled the incident with its initial tweet. Others feel that the situation was handled properly and no further steps should be taken, according to the sources who spoke to CNN.
It's unclear if the Academy leadership is planning on meeting to discuss the unprecedented situation. CNN has contacted the Academy for further comment.
The Academy's Board of Governors has the power to discipline members who violate their code of conduct through a vote for suspension or expulsion from the Academy.
Rock chose not to press charges against Smith over the onstage altercation, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
CNN has reached out to Smith's representatives for comment.
There are more than 9,000 voting members of the Academy, comprised of Hollywood artists and film executives.

Those of you who believe that you can slap another man and not suffer any ramifications are mistaken.  There is no area where you can abuse innocents and not suffer from colleagues.  His smart move should be to claim he is entering therapy.

Will smith is a bit of a wacko I really can’t stand his wife she’s an impetuous snob. They really have a strange relationship in which culminated in both of them seeing others while they were married. He’s always trying to come up with some New Age philosophy to showcase his higher being and yet he goes off in this despicable manner. Dude needs some serious help.

Chris Rock said "I'm going to" (keep his wife's name out of his mouth).  But you could see he was going to make a joke about it (I assume taking a shot at Will Smith) but then held back.  I would LOVE to know what he was going to say there.  If he said it at the time, I have a feeling it would've started a brawl on live TV.

This is the most intriguing question about the whole thing.

It sure did sound like Chris Rock had something devastating to say...and, rightfully chose to hold it back.

These stand up guys, and Chris Rock is one of the best - are very witty in these circumstances, they're trained to be.  Moreover, I'm sure he already wrote a bunch of jokes that he thought the better of telling.

I would really like to know what he was going to say.  I hope it comes out some day.

Find it interesting that you didnt watch it, are commenting based on replays of what you think happened.  You missed all the comments, the bleeped portions etc,  the things that allow you to justify what you think happened and allow you to speak to something, yet are telling me my justification, none of it means anything.

OK, I'm with you, Spielberg was there after all.

Did you watch it and do you also think that the Oscars are a reality show?

You actually believe an actor would do something where hes getting the kick back Smith is because hes a moron?  In an industry where being liked by fans is the difference between working and not?

You think The Academy condemns the actions of Smith at last night's show?  What to help sell it to dolts?  "We have officially s tarted a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."  You they want to be a part of selling this?

Earlier on Monday, CNN learned that Academy leadership "strongly considered" removing Smith from the Oscars telecast after the incident, according to a source close to the situation.   Again to sell the story

So yeah, thats why you shouldnt talk about not understanding

Talked to my Mom about it, and she brought up the fact that there was no way he would've tried that if someone like The Rock made the joke instead. This is just a really bad look overall.

Jada has made their entire private life public including the fact that she cheated with her sons friends, and has been open about her condition for years as well. It's not like its a rare condition either as a good chunk of the population has dealt with a sort of baldness. When she went public about her cheating, Will was the one crying on television that he wasn't good enough. He's been thoroughly gaslit and last night did something heinous due to it.

The people who buy tickets to his movies, the studios movies, the producers movies.  Should I go on, this really isnt that difficult.

Given Smiths career was in the toilet because no one liked him and then he wins an award for a movie he funded you think it would a wise decision?  What acting gigs have you seen Smith in other than the ones he pays for?

People aren’t going to see a Will Smith movie because he slapped Chris Rock?
