Athletic Report: A ‘ton‘ of free agents have said no to NYJ

Tyreek Hill showed up the Jets when laughing off their interest in him, and in some ways it was a reminder of how far the organization still must travel to become relevant.

“What I heard on the Jets is, they were in on a ton of guys and got nobody,” an exec said. “They don’t have a selling point to players right now. People don’t know what to think of Zach Wilson, players don’t necessarily covet playing in that market, and guys who have choices tend to wind up elsewhere. They are in this weird purgatory.”

The truth hurts, but there’s more to it than that. The Jets were able to sign a long list of players to more modest APYs: guard Laken Tomlinson($13.3 million), cornerback D.J. Reed ($11 million), tight end C.J. Uzomah ($8 million), safety Jordan Whitehead ($7.3 million), tight end Tyler Conklin ($6.8 million), pass rusher Jacob Martin ($4.5 million) and more.

“They drafted some decent starters to fill needs, and if they can draft an impact ‘blue’ with those top-10 picks, that is big,” an exec said. “I’m good with the process. The Jets of old would go and spend huge money in free agency and have it not work. Instead of running up the hill, they are hiking up the hill the correct way. They need their young quarterback and young receivers to get better, and then can they be sounder on defense? I don’t think they are ready to jump to the playoffs, but they are getting better.”

I can see this being true.  A top flight player/veteran will have their choice and if it were me, I'd want to go to a team that could compete right away... not a couple/few years down the road.  The Jets haven't shown anything of the last few years and a rebuild is quite risky.

the jets are a terrible team with a gm that totally blew his first draft, a coach that is unproven but he is a d "expert" and coached the jets to one of the worst defenses in the league and a rookie qb that many think is not going to be a great qb.

The only way you can get elite players or even very good players to come to the Jets right now is to grossly overpay something Joe has shown he is not willing to do. The only way the jets get out of the basement of the AFC  is for Joe to nail this draft in a BIG way. If Joe is smart(that is a big if) he needs to draft game changer playmakers-WR and an Edge rusher.  I believe drafting a defensive back with one of the first two picks is criminal at this point.

This shouldn’t be surprising to anyone. The team has stunk for a decade, Lacks real star talent, especially with Wilson still being an unknown. There were also plenty of teams with money and the pieces to make trades. So unless we completely overpaid, we weren’t gonna land the big names with all things being equal. Having said that I’m fine with the process. This coming draft is very important to the future of our team.

Ye the only way they dig themselves out if this is if they draft better and start scoring points. Which is why drafting a corner, safety, OL in round 1 seems nuts to me. The Jets need to score more touchdowns.

yep you are what your record says you are-at some point Joe's teams need to win games-tearing down a 7 win team to a 2 win team takes no talent -literally anybody can do that-what takes talent and what not many people can do is build that torn down team into a winning team.

If you cant add quality free agents you best hit most of your draft picks-a rebuild cant happen when your guys like becton and mims suck and cant get on the field.

I'd have to think if they had managed a West Side stadium or say their own stadium in the Navy Yard in Brooklyn  or over the rail yards in Long Island City, an NYC stadium would have given them an extra leg up to attract free agents.

Players take a look at what's going on in the real world, and everyone has or is leaving NYC for better weather, communities, taxes, cost of living, etc. 

On top of that, this franchise hasn't produced a SB birth in any current player's lives. Based on last season's QB play, the franchise isn't trending towards one anytime soon, either.

On top of that, this GM has (rightly) been careful with his boss's money. Even the big money contracts he's given out have been good value. FAs/Sign and Trade candidates are looking for the Maccagnan type that will overpay. 

Add it all up, and this should not be news, it's business as usual. Frankly, I'm not upset. I don't want the Tyreek type of player anyways.

Beautiful.  This team os building through the draft.  The plan is working perfectly!

Nobody wanted to go to Buffalo either until they drafted Allen and became good. Nobody wanted to come to the Jets until we had Rex and a young core of guys that propelled this team.

You need to change the narrative before FAs come knocking. Frankly, in the vast majority of cases, these FAs end up being overpaid baggage anyways so let's just focus on building the young core of this team.

I’m sure there are quite a few FAs that turned the Jets down because they are the Jets. We should be happy that JD stuck to his price and didn’t just throw money at the problem. He’s sticking to his plan and I like it. Great players want to win so they’re way more likely to go to a contender. This isn’t hard to figure out and it’s also not exactly the fault of the GM. He’ll land a few but lose more. Get over it. They’re building mostly through the draft. The stars will come if the plan works.

Exactly. How is it breaking news that free agents prefer to play for winning teams in better climates with a less aggressive media presence?

This is where I am with what they’re doing. I understand that the Jets are not an attractive destination right now. The team has been a laughingstock for -not just the last decade but- just about their entire existence. Overpaying players who don’t want to play here has not worked. We’ve seen it not work over and over again. He’s “failing to close” on those players who are willing to take less money to play somewhere else. I’m really good with not closing those deals. 
 
We need to start seeing results, though. Robert Saleh needs to look like a real head coach. Zach has to play better. The defense needs a major rebound. I really don’t think they’re that far away. If these guys deliver on their plan to develop all these young players, they should start having some success this season. 
 
They need to crush this draft. They need blue chip prospects at impact positions from that first round. They need immediate starters in the second. The Jets will once again be one of, if not the, youngest teams in the league this year. This time, only the new guys are learning the systems, though, with vets in place to help them along (unlike last year when everyone as learning on the job). 
 
I want to see this experiment thru.

By all accounts we had one of the better group of FA signings.  Not sure why they're making it sound like the Jets missed out on most of their targets.

The proof will be on the field, and in the record books.  Hard facts about how we're doing in this lengthy JD "rebuild".

We finally start winning, this kind of article is forgotten. 

We keep losing like we've lost every year of JD's reign to-date....well, we'll all be wondering if the next GM is any good.
