Patrick Mahomes already has more career Pass TD* (179) than Roger Staubach (177), Joe Namath (176) and Bart Starr (165). Patrick Mahomes has been an NFL starter for 4 seasons. *incl. postseason

I don't know if I buy into this "bad teams ruin good QBs" narrative, but Mahomes certainly wouldn't have had the same success here with Big Macc building the team.

Valid point.  I was thinking of what happened to Mahomes against Tampa and wonder if he would have been permanently shell shocked lining up behind guys like Spencer Long, Brandon Shell, Alex Lewis, Jonotthan Harrison, Winters, etc.

Though of course the NFL has become the Arena League so it's absolutely NOT an apples-to-apples comparison.

Yup.  That stat says more about how the game has changed in the last 50 years than it is a statment of Mahomes abilities relative to those guys.

I don't know if he'd have been shell shocked, but I can 100% say he wouldn't be signing his second contract with us, lol.

At what point do we stop pretending that the NFL in 2022 isn't bad football? Same goes for the NBA; complete trash league.

Many/most of the changes in football were necessary.  But the NBA has no excuse.  The game isn't inherently dangerous like football is.  Removing all physical play as an overreaction to the Malice in the Palace was a mistake.

Different eras have others have said. Passing records and receiving records will be shattered when this current generation hangs it up. On the flip side, emmit smiths rushing record likely won’t be touched for a very long time. This sport has changed so much in the last 15-20 years, let alone 50-60 years ago.

Please Stop trying to compare players from this era to players from earlier one's when football WAS FOOTBALL... today, qb's & receivers will have RIDICULOUSLY OVER Inflated numbers due to all the rules that Favor them.

But for some reason jets still can’t draft a qb who can throw for 4k yards or a draft a wr who can reach 1k yards receiving. Lmao

Which is why Tom Brady is NOT the G.O.A.T.

Hes the greatest of this generatiion. Not the G.O.A.T.

Making the D second class citizens was necessary? Head hits? Yeah, you're right, that had to go.  Wondering if they'll toss a flag because a DB did his job cleanly? No good. 'No flags on the play!' ******* pathetic that they have to say that.  The prevailing sports leagues don't have fives on said sports. Tired of pretending that they do.

Every generation thinks theirs was tougher than the current one and it's always an adorable thing to see spouted off, but keep in mind that everyone back then was jacked up on cocaine, painkillers, and steroids without fear of any repercussions from the league. Pretty sure Mahomes would have been just fine.

IDK, playing football while on cocaine sounds pretty difficult.

to win one game?  it would be hard not to consider staubach or namath over mahommes.  as others have said, the game is very different and the qb positions gets well protected by the rules.  and so do the pass receivers.

Written in 2017:

”Carson Palmer. Seems he’s #11 in completions, #13 in passing yards, and #12 in touchdown passes. Even if Palmer never plays another down after his recent injury, he’s still ahead of four-time Super Bowl champ and two-time NFL MVP Joe Montana in all three categories.”

that says it all.

I guess Carson Palmer is in the GOAT conversation!

It's just different.

The rules are different, the medical advances are insane, all of it.  You didn't see very many QBs playing into their late 30 back then, now, it's odd for a QB not to be able to play past 35.  Players are, of course, bigger and faster, but there is also far less pad in practice, and a decrease in the actual ability to tackle.

Yeah. Because he would have chosen to play Baseball instead. 😆

A great player today would obviously be a great player then.   That player would also be (especially a QB) would be far more beat up due to the protections the QBs and other players now get.

Would Mahomes be great in the 70s, sure.  Would he throw for 50 TDs a season?  No, the league didn't work that way, receviers and tight ends took far more punishment, the Mel Blount rule may not have been passed yet, the turf was like concrete.  It was just a different game, and numbers really can't be compared from now to then.

Sigh

its a fun narrative but Maccagnan scouted 2 QB classes and passed on one for the other. The guy he fell in love with was Darnold

He psssed on that entire class for Darnold.

Adams was the pick because of his vocal leadership style.
