In 5 yrs we'll trade him for a 1st rd'er and other picks... & draft his replacement the year prior... it's all cyclical.

Is it? Because when's the last time we drafted a WR who was that good? 1996? If only it were that easy.

My thoughts are the following.  This was an exceptionally tough draft to navigate for a GM and I think it might go down as one of the great GM career killers, b/c the difference between pick 5 and pick 100 is very small (and there will be potential HOF players in this draft that are taken later).

Sauce (or Eck) at 4 were the safe picks.  You lose a little value b/c he probably would have gone a little higher in any other year (like 7-10), but Sauce is a great player and relatively safe pick at a position of need and it makes sense.  Barring some sort of crazy trade down for a host of picks, I like the pick.  I also think it was a pretty obvious one.  Another implication is that it probably means they have more faith in Becton than reports led us to believe, b/c I do think Eck was the best player in the draft.

Pick 10 is my least favorite.  Garret Wilson is basically a Moore sidegrade, and i've been worried about the pick for months.  He fits the offense, and is a solid player, but we definitely lose value here (compared to Moore in the 2nd).  In another draft he probably goes like 20.  He's not really going to transform your team either.  A truly elite WR1 will continue to be a need for the Jets, but I do expect him to be a top 20 player barring injuries (and his frame makes injuries a problem) and that's ok I guess.

Of course the JJ trade is the big crowd pleaser.  He is a very good player that imo will be a better player than our pick10.   Maybe not a truly transcendent edge, but we now have a pretty potent attack between Lawson, JJ and JFM.  Now, could we have gotten him or something similar 10 picks later?  The loss of a 3rd rounder in this draft sucks, b/c there are A LOT of talented players left that are not that far removed from JJ's caliber.

I don't know.  Overall, I give Douglas an A- and I like that he was relatively conservative with how he protected his draft value.  He really is an excellent GM that understands how to balance things properly (and isn't completely careless with his picks like Idzik or incompetent like Mac).

Well I think he needs to be given credit for doing well in a lousy draft year.  As you note some of the guys we got are going to be further down in other years but what can you do there was no chase or parsons or garrett.  We still have 5 picks and it would not surprise me if we trade down at some point.

Linderbaum is going to cost 2.4 mil cap hit but a 6.8 mil signing bonus.

Gardner is getting 21.5 mil signing bonus and over a 6 mil cap hit. these rookie guys arent that cheap.

My point was more that they had a $3MM center and replaced him with a $3MM center instead of keeping the $3MM center and adding a position player that’d be upwards of $20MM or more per season as a veteran. It’s debatable value, for all those slobbering over them.

And Bateman has plenty of talent but is coming off just a 500-yard rookie season. They’re an Andrews injury away from being the easiest team in football to defend, no matter how much one loves their shiny new center.

I get that they want to run the ball more than pass it down there, but what are they planning on running it 700x and passing it 300x?

Lamar Jackson was livid, with them effectively swapping Bozeman & Brown for Linderbaum. LJ may not be an all-time great GM but it remains to be seen that this swap is a net gain.

That's the going rate for top WRs and what we'll be paying Wilson if by the grace of God he works out.

Just seems silly to me that all these teams trading up for WRs would kill to have that WR turn out as good as AJB, but they neglected to trade for 24 year old AJ Brown. Whatever. I hope Wilson is awesome, but it's not what I would have done.

Agreed if you’re not gonna pay big money to a 24 year old stud WR who are you gonna pay it to?

Makes no sense to me why the Titans didn’t just give him the money. Outside of QB players like Brown are the biggest commodities in the league that are worth big money especially when they’re still very young like him.

Quick thought: It’s awesome to watch JD in the draft room at work. I never see him so giddy, he’s in his element, having fun, kicking ass and taking names.
Him and Saleh are truly on the same page and are step by step with this thing. Ulbrich was JACKED when Sauce happened. He’s prob the happiest guy tonight.
They tried to trade back up again at the end of the first but didn’t happen.
Also the whole, Woody will have a role nonsense. Throw that out the window. It’s JDs show, Woody obviously just signs off on it all. Woody has no idea who half these guys are.

Everybody wins tonight. Those who wanted Edge, got it. Same with receiver. Makes no difference if we trade up for Wilson or Johnson, we got the right 3 names

in fact, Joe gambled and won. No way Wilson lasts as long as Johnson did. For once, Lady Luck flashed her Fanny our way.

Not to be a debbie downer or anything, but I remember reading similar things in 2020 when JD traded back in round 2 and was still able to land Mims.

Not that I'm not happy with tonight... just sayin'.

I hope this time the feeling is right.

great to hear he tried to trade back again... Any idea who they are targeting?? Double dip at WR? LB?

I would love Watson... even with them getting Wilson... Dean is my next favorite... Then Jones..

Yep.

The good news is Wilson is considered a considerably better prospect than Mims was coming out. Wilson was widely regarded as WR1 in this draft class given Williams' injury history . Mims had many more detractors.  Wilson was probably a lock to be one of the next two picks had the Jets passed on him.

Different draft for a different coach... The GM was drafting for what crazy eyes wanted...

Part of it is he’s a perfect match for the Jets system that highly values explosive starts from the DE and allows freedom to rush.

Yeah, Saleh mentioned the scheme fit.

This is a deep edge class. There were a lot of solid edge guys. He was one of them.

And if your system is more concerned about setting an EDGE, he’s not your guy.   Lucky that the class is so deep that it allowed teams to be picky because there are still very good EDGE prospects on the board.

I dunno man. You can spin that same sense of reluctance for 32 teams In 32 drafts. Nothing is guaranteed/bulletproof… but for once, on paper, we killed it.

PFF stated that JJ is very good at setting the edge also, so he might be even better ( more versatile) than some of us think.

This statement is even more exciting for those of us on this side of the Pond.

For some reason I woke up thinking I wonder how round 1 concluded (I went to bed around pick 15). Checking the results through bleary eyes I see, wait, WTF!, how? We got JJ???
Holy smokes we got a nice haul on day 1. A lockdown CB, a WR1 and a top 5 EDGE in his draft class. Amazing!!
Thos ain't the same old Jets!!!!
Did not see that trade up coming ... saved the night and made sauce pick pretty great

This is legitimate needle moving sh*t we’re witnessing

It’s not just the needles that are moving!!!?……..went to bed at 3am (I’m in the UK) while they were at pick 16 …happy but a little deflated that we didn’t take JJ at 10 and concerned where we are going to get our edge rusher, then wake up to this news……amazing, after almost 40 years of following this team it finally feels like we can have nice things on draft day!!…..Pumped AF
