For Mims to stick this year, won't he need to play special teams?  Is he even willing to do that?

Hopefully, JD will sign a decent vet to be the swing tackle, since whoever that is is likely to get a few starts.  Maybe Max Mitchell can help sooner rather than later so that Edoga and/or McDermott are goners.

Didn't he play some special teams last year?  Maybe in preseason but I seem to recall him being asked about playing ST.

Yeah, you simply can’t keep Mims on the roster unless he somehow wins one of the top three slot, which seems unlikely. You can’t have a WR4 who doesn’t play specials. The best explanation for his troubles last year is that he was drafted to play in Gase’s vertical offense, and is a poor fit for this one, which is all horizontal. Might just be best for all parties to let Mims go to the Bears or Cowboys and just give his spot to the Jeff Smiths of the world

It's a good point that his seemingly desirable attributes don't fit the system, even if he gets right. Hopefully, JD is holding onto him to trade with someone. Something, even a low pick or developmental player, is better than nothing and releasing him at this point. Maybe some team is going to cut a guy we like soon, and we send Mims to them so a guy we like doesn't hit the open market.

The problem with our defense is the lack of effort QW

plays with. It is apparent on film, look at the lack of

hustle compared to any good linemen. Our pass

rush was inconsistent to poor and our run defense

even worse. Saleh has said the problem against  the

run is not our LBs, the fault is with the interior defense.

While  Williams is not always on the field, he is the poorest

hustling member of the unit and the entire team.

Mims has played special teams for the Jets, sparingly I'll

admit and his effort is there.

Concerning his not knowing how to play all three positions.

Listening to him doing long interviews, he doesn't come

across as an idiot. I'm sure he understands the basics of the play

but through lack of time on the field has yet to grasp the subtilties

of all three positions.  Not a suggestion but at a time when a

big return would be very important, we have better return options

than Berrios. Wilson is better with the ball in his hand than Zach's buddy

and our home run hitting new RB would be a hell of a kick returner.

I realize, working with the special team blockers importance  but

Berrios isn't in the class of explosive playmakers as Wilson or Hall

I said it in a earlier post:

If Mims shows ANYTHING he's our number 5.

If he somehow puts it together, however unlikely, he's our number 1.

That's worth hanging onto for another 2 years.

You are basing off his size and speed and not ability to play football or actually get open.  Or even fit in this offensive system, let alone football IQ which can not just be flipped on.

Elijah Moore and Garrett Wilson will have something to say about who’s #1 even if Mims starts to put it together, which I say unfortunately is doubtful based on what I saw last year.

We are keeping Zach, so Mims gets more chances too, IMO.

Defense

- I think we are going to see some drastic scheme changes.  The DLine will
still be the focus, but the additions to the secondary leads me to believe
we will see:

 * More 1 on 1 coverage
 * Less zone concepts
 * More blitzing from the secondary, particularly the CBs
 * More positional switching

- You don't spend the amount of free agency $$$ (DJ Reed & Jordan Whitehead)
and draft capital (Ahmad Gardner) on players to have them play vanilla Cover 2/
Cover 3 all game.  Particularly when their tape showed that they're physical,
can press cover and blitz

- With the depth we have in the secondary we should see massive "cross
training" as we head to camp.  The staff flipped Jason Pinnock to safety last
year and in my opinion we should do the same with Bryce Hall.  A secondary
that has "positionless" players can confuse QBs and lead to INTs

- John Franklin-Myers should "float" between DE and DT based on the situation

Offense

- I believe the drafting of Breece Hall will shift the RB position from a
committee approach to a RB1, RB2, RB3 structure.  Hall's size and college
production showed he can be RB1 (20-25 touches) and even though Michael
Carter was impressive last year he did get banged up.  Which leads me to
believe he would be better suited to a RB2 (10-15 touches) role.  The fight
for the RB3 role will be wicked between Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson, Zonovan
Knight, Austin Walter and Lamical Perine

- With actual TEs on the roster this year I would expect to see some of the "SF
Kittle" package incorporated into the passing game

- I'm glad we didn't double dip at WR in the draft.  Because I want to see if
Denzel Mims has any shot at reaching his draft potential.  I'm not expecting it
but if Mims somehow finds his game a WR corps with him being WR5 would be scary

- Now its all on Zach Wilson to thrive in this offense.  Because Joe Douglas has
done for him everything Mike Maccagnan didn't do for Sam Darnold.  The OLine has
been revamped and there is quality and depth at the skill positions.  Wilson now
needs to show what he did in the TB game for an entire 17 game schedule

I think Saleh learned fast that in the AFC East (and the AFC in general) you have to be multiple on defense otherwise the O's will chew you up.

I heard on NFLN during the Draft that the Jets played a ton of Cover 1 last year, more than you would think with Saleh running the defense. So I would expect to see more trust in that coverage with the upgrade in the secondary as well as even more blitzing.

Even Still, Cover 3 still puts the corners on an island with the WRs, just not the press man we're use to seeing with our blitz happy 3-4 defenses of years past. Go look at old footage of Sherman in Seattle, or even Ramsey in Jax....in cover 3 you're still expected to erase a part of the field and mirror that X or Z receiver. Sauce is a great fit no matter which way you slice it. I just didn't expect the Jets to think of it as a priority that high, and wanted a Pass rusher over anything else. landing JJ in the late 1st makes this an absolute home run.

The thing is...he was multiple in San Fran as well......people overblow his ties to Pete Carroll's cover 3

He originally was very Vanilla when he was hired in SF. However, he quickly learned the lesson you're talking about while DC there....

Nice thought, but both Wilson and Moore are better #1 prospects than Mims was IMO.

It'll be a minor miracle if we can get "#3/Possession receiver" from Mims, at least, allowing Davis to shake loose at the end of 2022, and allowing us to drop guys like Cager who are (likely) just not pro-level quality players..

I see Mims' size/speed ratio as the X factor.

When I say put it together, I mean put it ALL together.

Route running, mental, work ethic.

He's got God given gifts that Wilson and Moore do not.

It's not going to happen though and thankfully we have Wilson and Moore to rely on.

So, this might be crazy talk, but the Jets have two young receivers drafted in the last 2 years who should be good for years to come. Let's assume Wilson pans out and Moore is even (ahem) more than last year.

Davis is ok a vet place holder, good all around skill set.

Berrios there for some slot stuff.

I get there are things the offense needs to accomplish and it's absolutely worth it to try and get Mims to get better at what he needs. But if he's just kind of good at one thing now, if it be speed and using his size to catch stuff, why not, if he doesn't put it all together, just use him as the 4th WR who does what he can do?

Then they cut bait on him and Davis and look for another WR in the draft or FA if they want to spend 25 million.

Amazing that Mims still dominates a post-best-draft-ever thread that features 2022’s RB1 and WR1 Lolol.

you know what tho, that speaks to what people know is untapped potential. Does it ever surface? Who knows. Unlikely probably, but the Milkshake stills calls to you.

Nice writeup. Hearing Saleh speak last year, always seemed like we wanted to be more aggressive but didn't have the horses at corner. We have the horses.

Regarding Breece Hall, he definitely can be an every down back. However, I think we should pace ourselves with him. He had 700 carries in college. I don't have proof, but know that Bell fell off as he was approaching 2,000 carries between college/pros. Ezekiel Elliot is another guy that starting to come down turn earth. We should try and limit Hall's carries to about 200 carries for the season that way we don't burn him out and can have him for a solid 8 years. And we have Michael Carter who is awesome as well. So, no need to burn Hall out.

If Hall is getting 20+ carries a game, we are talking about 300+ carries a season. That's just too much.

As long as MC can stay healthy I could easily see these 2 splitting 90% of the carries (guessing with Breece getting 55% of those carries).

I see we qw from a very different perspective. I think the motor and drive is there. He is always double teamed and there simply were not other playmakers up front that the offense had to worry about.

I will say this is a big year for him. I do expect to see a lot more but not because of his effort but those that are now around him.

Here's a controversial thought I had and Daniel Jeremiah said as he
talked about the Jet draft.  Its fair to say that Zach Wilson has a
better offensive cast around him than Aaron Rodgers has in GB

My thoughts on this thread -

Nice to see KRL enthusiastic again.  I enjoy his contributions but it was clear the persistent loosing was a drag.

I suspect that Sauce will get more sacks then Walker, the Edge picked #1.

Many were calling for LBs to be picked.  Im looking forward to seeing how Nasirildeen and Sherwood are coming along.  They “flashed” some prior to going down for the year.  Moves so far indicate that the staff may have some confidence in theses two.

Mims is the backup X receiver to Corey Davis.  If he can figure things out, that job should be his in 2023...

Corey Davis is now the back up X receiver.

My guess is Davis is going to play the slot more often than not.  It's where he's had his most success.   I suspect the plan is to move these three pieces around everywhere.  Putting Davis, Moore and Wilson in any one of the roles - making it very difficult to defend.  Moore and Wilson can do a lot - Jet Sweeps, do deep and just about every intermediate route.

ML is really the key to this season - he has a lot of toys to play with now - is he creative enough to make it work.
