With all the new additions on the D line, good players will be cut. There are now 17 D linemen on the Jets roster.

The Jets have 17 d linemen on the team, currently.  With a 4-3 defense, it seems reasonable that the Jets will not carry more than 8 or 9 players.

Let's examine the list:

Definite Keepers:

JFM, Quinnen Williams, Carl Lawson, Sheldon Rankins, Jermaine Johnson, Michael Clemons, Solomon Thomas.  The total here is 7 D linemen that I think are rock solid keepers.

The next 5 I think are all on the bubble:

Bryce Huff, Vinny Curry, Jacob Martin, Nathan Shepherd, Jonathon Marshall

The next 5 I think are toast:

Hamilcar Rashad Jr., Tanzel Smart, Bradlee Anae, C.J. Brewer, Savion Williams.

Looking at the players on the bubble, who do you think sticks, and who goes?

I think that have to keep Nathan Shephard, since he is a run stopper.  I also think the Jets keep Jonathon Marshall, who their not going to cut after a red-shirt 1st year.  That gives you 9 Defensive Linemen.

That means that Bryce Huff, Vinny Curry and Jacob Martin could be goners?

What do you think?

Keep Marshall, Huff maybe. Don't see the appeal in Shepherd, he is what he is at this stage.

Are any of them eligible for the practice squad?

I think they might be keeping more than you think. Saleh likes to rotate DL a lot. I think I read Q was only used on 30% of defensive snaps. Saleh was asked about this and said with what we ask the DL to do, if you are doing, you can't  be in on more than that.

If I had to guess today, before camp, Id say they end up keeping:

Lawson, Johnson II, Quinnen, JFM, Clemons, Rankins, Solomon Thomas, Bryce Huff, and then I give the edge to Jonathan Marshall for the 9th spot, over Shepherd.  They might end up keeping all 10.

Nice problem to have.

Safe (7)   Q, JFM, Lawson, JJ,  Clemons, Marshall. Martin The starting four, recent draft picks, and a 2022 FA signing

Cap causality(?):  Rankins saves $5M if cut.   Can see this happening if Marshall and Thomas have solid camps and Rankins doesn't show more than he did last year.

Bubble  (4) Huff, Curry, Sheppard, Thomas -  Huff might be the odd man out with four edge guys in front of him.  Curry, Sheppard and Thomas were all signed to one year deals and can be cut with little cap hit.  I can see  keeping Curry and Thomas if Rankins doesn't return to his pre-2021 form.

Hard to see Huff going anywhere. Same with Curry if he's healthy  (if he can play, he will definitely contribute). I'll also guess that they keep Johnathan Marshall (who they just drafted last year) and Nathan Shepherd (who has some good moments in between roughing the passer)

QW was in on 51.56% of defensive snaps.

So true about Rankins, We have four IDL even w/o him and not even counting JFM---QW, Shep (signed because Rankins is toast, IMHO). Thomas, and Marshall. I think JD/Saleh know they need the net 4 million-plus  cap savings to roll over to next year for finishing touches for FAs (ours or others).

Johnson and Lawson can both line up DE/LB.  I suspect we are going to see a lot of different looks.  We aren't that strong at LB, could see a lot of creative looks.

This. I 100% agree with the 7 "safe" guys on the list.

I was surprised they did not cut Rankins in the offseason. But yeah, I think he is on the bubble in large part because of his bloated salary and sub-par play last year against the run. Especially if Marshall looks to have grown as a player from last year. If they decide to keep him it will be because of poor showings in camp from Shep or Marshall.

I agree that Huff, Shep., Curry and Thomas are all on 'the bubble'. In THAT order. Huff and Shep are probably most likely to be the final ones to make it. Curry and Thomas most likely to get cut. JMHO.

Looking back at last year's roster coming out of camp, we had 6 DTs and only 3 edge. Granted, our talent at edge was significantly lighter, but given my thoughts above only have us carrying JFM/Q/Marshall, Thomas, I've got to think they keep at least 5 - so Rankins or Sheppard make the final cut.  Not sure whether this means one less at edge, or we just carry my DL in 2022.

As many are saying - Huff isn't going anywhere.  He's going to be Edge 3 and a starter if someone gets hurt.  He's good.

With JFM moving inside -

IDL: Williams, JFM and Rankins as three rotating

Edge: Lawson, Johnson and Huff as three rotating

We have a very solid D-line.

Especially if Johnson is good and Lawson is 100%

Still going to need some more depth, but I'm not nearly as worried about the DL as many are.  Just have to stay healthy.

My DT predictions:

1. Rankins gets cut in replace of a TBD run stuffing specialist, who essentially replaces Fatukasi’s role

2. Jonathan Marshall wins Rankin’s role, a shooting 1 gap disruptor, over Solomon Thomas

3. Our top 5 interior will be Q, JFM (passing downs) / TBD (running downs), Marshall, Thomas

4. Depending on how things play out, I can see Jets keeping 1 extra DT or Edge over LB or even Corner.

Starting Edge (with JFM assuming a big role in running downs) = Lawson + JJ

Rotating Edge = Huff + Martin

Developmental Edge = Clemons

This is going to be the biggest battleground of camp and pre-season.  Far too many guys to keep them all, and some good players are going to be cut.

I'd definitely want to keep Huff at edge - he's too talented and productive, when healthy, to give up on now. That probably means that guys like Vinny Curry and Solomon Thomas are very much on the bubble, despite being solid veterans with some guaranteed money.

In  the end, I think we keep 10: JFM, Lawson, JJ, Clemons, Martin, Huff, Quinnen, Shepherd, Marshall, Thomas. Curry is a tough cut, while Rankins is a cap cut.

Carrying 10 DL will mean we have to go lighter at other positions - possibly QB (where we might end up carrying 2 on the 53), FB/TE (Ruckert can play both, potentially making Wesco and Bawden obsolete) or LB (we often only play 2 LBs in base, so can go light there).

One significant issue is that, despite carrying 10 DL, we really haven't improved the interior DL against the run.  Foley was our best guy there, and he hasn't been replaced. Teams will attempt to run the ball down our throats again, until we prove that we can stop it.

I think you need to add Martin to the edge group since we signed him as a FA

Rankins absolutely cannot make the roster. He was abysmal last year.

I'd swap him with Huff for sure. Huff is way too good on passing downs to just be cut loose. You just can't ever play him against the run.

Wouldn't say he was abysmal. He was OK.

But Huff is lock. Rankins probably battles it out with Johnathan Marshall. If Marshall looks good and ready to take the next step, Rankins is cut.

He was absymal. As bad as there was in the league in some areas.

According to PFF only 4 defensive tackles who played 500+ snaps graded worse against the run. One of those was Solomon Thomas lol.

Of those who played over 600 he was the worst. If we go with Rankins and Q as starters then our interior is going to be a sieve. Again.

I think Carl Lawson, Jermaine Johnson, Jacob Martin, Michael Clemons, Bryce Huff and Jabari Zuniga will all make the team.

JFM will be moving inside in passing situations. At this point in his career Vinny Curry is a situation pass rushing DT.

Out of curiosity, what makes you think Zuniga will make the team?  Outside of 1 sack, what has he shown at the NFL level?

Just off the rip that hes JD 3rd round pick from 2020. He's been off and on INJ and will get his shot. At worse once again he'll be on the practice squad. Also someone is bound to get hurt.

Who ever stays finally on DL they need to be coached and adjust better against certain OLs to stop run. They don't have a big 400 lb run stuffer in the middle so the need to slant more and use athleticism to prevent double teams and clog up OL and let LBs cleanup.

They need to be able to stop the run to get into passing downs to use speed.

Martin is a lock.  We gave him a bunch of money.  He ain't going anywhere.  Nor should Marshall or Huff.  Rankins, IMO, can go.  This could also open up the possibility of moving someone like Huff for a late round pick.  I doubt you could move Carl Lawson.

Anyhow, what a good problem to have.  We might have too many guys who can get to the QB.

The Jets obviously have strengths and weaknesses on their roster.

The DL they let go will find other jobs.  Same thing for CB.  Shepherd was only guaranteed $50K.,

The LBs and S they let go will end up working at Home Depot.

On offense maybe Wesco or Yeboah find a spot.  Don’t know about Edoga and GVR.

WR looks better, but after top 5 who knows who is employable.

This all will change with injuries.

Was just going to post this. Martin just got a $3.5MM signing bonus, and carries a base salary of just $1MM additional (all of which seems guaranteed, and maybe $1MM of his 2023 salary, too).

For Martin to get cut before the season, he'd have to develop a sudden inability to walk/run and breathe at the same time.
