The Van Roten Era is over

Recommended Posts

Jets released OG Greg Van Roten.

The move clears $3.5 million against the cap. Van Roten, 32, loses his roster spot after the Jets claimed fellow veteran — and younger — OG Nate Herbig off waivers. Van Roten started 10-of-17 games for the Jets last season and has 50 games of starting experience with the Panthers and Jets over the last several seasons. He should land an interior reserve gig elsewhere.

Remember when everyone really wanted Van Roten signed in free agency?  Good times.

He was always likely to go as soon as the position was upgraded this year. Herbig is young, cheaper and better.

Yup with cheaper being the key word. Jets save $3.5 mil vs the cap.

Feeney wasn't any better than GVR last year. Why did we bring him back?????

Desperation mostly. Feeny did get better but that’s not saying much.  Mullet too.

I think Justin Hardee probably goes too. Great team mate but $2 mill for a purely ST guy is going to be hard to justify with the roster improvements.

Let’s have a little class.  The guy was a local son and grew up a Jets fan.  Gave it his all but fell a bit short so the team wisely upgraded.

Seemed to be a locker room leader and good teammate.  Also wasn’t as bad as some are making him out to be.  Jeff Criswell, now that guy I remember as bad!!

Good luck GVR.

Agreed!  The guy grew up a Jets fan and is a human being.  Happy we upgraded but don’t need to focus on GVRs shortcomings.

Didn’t play as well as desired… but wasn’t as terrible as Jets fan think he was… we all know he was below average and came up small in some big spots.  His mistakes were magnified by how bad and visible they were on an already struggling team.  For what it’s worth his PFF grades were always in the average range but he never really passed the eye test.

Wishing him well in his next stop.
