OT off-season thread: What was your first car?

Technically, my first car was a primer blue pinto wagon that my dad traded a 12-pack for. The guy built it from 2 wrecked pintos and it was a mosaic of parts and death trap.

Only drive it for a few weeks. It was an abomination.

So it was just like a new pinto.

Used Ford Escort POS.  Totaled it in first month (not my fault, T-boned someone who pulled into traffic).

Then a new Ford Escort POS.  Engine died before it was even paid off.

Later cars had much better luck/reliability.  The Escort was a POS car tbqh.

My first car was a Volvo sedan my friend talked me into getting. It had a bad transmission and the turn signals never reset after a turn. I had it for like a month and returned it to the dealer. My dad went with me for the next car and we got a Plymouth Scamp. OMG was it ugly but what a great engine. Slant 6. It was the only thing that worked when I traded it in. My dad actually felt bad for me and paid for a Trans Am as my next car on his own. He said it was the least he could do after making me drive that thing for 3 years.

I used to think a car was just a way of getting from point “A” to point “B”—and, on weekends, point “C”—but that was the old me. That man died the moment I laid eyes on the 1987 Toyota Tercel!

I had one of them!  Just for a little while then I moved from Rockland onto Manhattan and 'Sold my Car to CarCash' because I listened to Stern for 6 hours a day and thought I wouldn't get screwed (I did).  Man I drank that cash away pretty quickly.  My first car was a hand-me-down from my sister 1984 VW Jetta with a 5 speed, manual moonroof and pleather seats.  Loved that car, until I had to sit in traffic going over the TZ in it for 2 hours and got the above (my first automatic!). Then proceeded to move like 4 months later into the city and promptly lose the job I moved in because of and then blow the money I got from CarCash on an epic bender with my roomate.  Ahhhh to be 23 again...

A cherry 1976 Honda Civic with a wooden steering wheel and stick-shift.  I loved that car.  May have been a 78 but I think it was a 76.  I'm 6'4" so I got a lot of comments climbing in and out of it.  Mine had the steering wheel on the other side.  I guess this is a British version.

1965 Plymouth Valient.

No power brakes, no power windows, no air conditioning, no power steering.  the trunk lock didn't work, so if you hit the back of the back seat hard enough, the trunk lid opened up. The car battery sat on a stand under the hood, and one time I went over a big bump, and the battery fell off its stand and fell onto the fan propeller.  I think there was no FM radio, just AM radio as well.

"All gas, no power brakes"?

1971 Ford LTD with a overhauled engine - the picture is the same color as mine.

not a big car dude but one time a lonely stretch of highway in rural Nebraska, had that baby up to 140.

And yes I was scared.

my buddy chris had this for a first car... but it was a rust bucket. There was no floor at all in the back passenger seat and we used to pee out of it and throw beer cans away. He was also 16 at the time and had no insurance and just mismatched plates he found on the highway. ohhh good times
