We talk about Mims a lot, but it’s sorta amazing that Perine is still on this roster. No way he makes the team now…is there?

Draft slot is the only reason he hung around last year.  No player on the roster is a worse fit for this offense than he is.

Can’t see Perine or Zuniga making the squad

Quarterback  - 3

  •  2 - Zach Wilson  6'2" 214 BYU (QB)
  • 19 - Joe Flacco 6'6" 245 Delaware (QB)
  •  5 - Mike White 6'5" 218 Western Kentucky (QB)

Flacco/White have prototypical size for the position. Not to say Zach doesn’t   have impressive physical traits, but another 2” would be nice. (And spare me the pecker jokes)

P Squad for both.

It appears that the team has significantly upgraded the talent on the roster Don’t even think they will make the practice squad and I’d be very surprised if Edoga remains on team as well

Looking forward to this competition.

Although Pinero made his kicks he really didn’t instill confidence (some of his kicks were so low Yao Ming would not have had to jump and they would have hit him right in the face) Greg Zuerlin should beat him out. Just wish Amendola would have worked out and solved this kicking carousel which has been JD’s Achilles heel since he arrived and Amendola was a pretty good emergency punter as well

The final roster is 53, which includes the punter, kicker and long snapper.

That leaves 50 open spots.  The way I see it:

I will only focus on the defense, since I believe this is the harder group to figure out in terms of final cuts down to 25.  Yes, some players will make the practice squad, but as far as final NFL roster, this is what I see:

You have 17 D linemen right now, and I can easily see 5 who I would cut.  That leaves 12 remaining, and I can't believe we will keep more than 10.  The players that I see as final cuts are:  Vinny Curry and Jacob Martin.  Zuniga is long gone.

You have 18 total cornerbacks and Safety's, and I see 5 who I would cut today.  That leaves 13, and I don't see us carrying more than 10 total.  I see the final cutdown cutting 3 of these 4 players, with one making the squad.  Guidry, Parks, Riley and Hardee.  Three of these players will be gone.

Linebackers:   This one is an enigma to me.  We have 8 linemen on the roster, and I see us carrying 5.  But the only 2 players I have confidence in right now are CJ Mosley and Quincy Williams.  To me, it's anyone's guess who stays and who goes, and for me, I would like to see the Jets bring in a veteran from outside the roster to solidify this group.

That makes a total of 25 for defense.  As for offense, outside of what will happen with the 5th spot for wide receiver, it looks almost cut and dry to me.  the 5th wide receiver is either Mims or someone else.  That's the big question to me on offense.  The tight end group has 6 right now, with the Jets carrying 4.  Uzomah, Conklin and Ruckert are locks, with one of the remaining 3 fighting it out for the final roster spot.

  • 72 - Michael Clemons 6'5" 263 Iowa State (DE) (Unsigned Draft Pick)
  • 47 - Bryce Huff 6'3" 255 Memphis (DE)
  • 99 - Vinny Curry 6'3" 279 Marshall (DE)
  • 54 - Jacob Martin 6'2" 242 Temple (DE/LB)  (Free Agent)
  • 92 - Jabari Zuniga  6'3" 264 Florida (DE)
  • 51 - Tim Ward 6'6" 255 Old Dominion (DE)
  • 55 - Hamilcar Rashed Jr. 6'2" 251 Oregon State (DE)
  • 50 - Bradlee Anae 6'3" 260 Utah (DL)

Very interesting edge group.  Even the guys at the bottom each have some unique tools and upside.  Rashed and Anae are still pretty young guys.  Interested to see who makes the Practice Squad.

Feels like the battle will be for the RB3 spot...

20 - Breece Hall 6'1" 220 Iowa State (RB)   (Unsigned Draft Pick)

32 - Michael Carter  5'8" 201 North Carolina (RB)

23 - Tevin Coleman 6'1" 210 Indiana (RB)

-or-

25 - Ty Johnson 5'10" 210 Maryland (RB)

Yup.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not of fan of either Coleman or Johnson.

I LOVE me some Hall, and like Carter, but I'd be fine if someone else won the #3 RB job besides Coleman/Johnson.

@Warfish

Coleman is the kind of guy you'd like to have for two reasons:  1) Veteran leadership for a young group 2) Knows the system from SF

BUT, I don't think those two reasons are very important any more.  Maybe they were important last year.  The system is installed, Michael Carter is becoming the veteran in the system, etc.  Coleman is a year older and his experience in this system is less valuable to the team.

Johnson is an interesting guy to me.  Always surprises with some kind of unexpected play and seems to have real talent.  But he's not consistent and goofs some assignments.

All this is to say that I agree with your post about not really caring who wins RB3, and it could be neither of those two guys and I wouldn't really complain.

Curry was a curious signing. I didn’t get it at all. He could be cut. Jacob Martin is relatively young (27), was just signed this winter, and has $2.5M guaranteed coming over the next two years. He’s pretty close to a lock. Conversely, Rankins played meh last year, has no guaranteed money coming and give the Jets $4.5M in cap relief if he’s cut. He’s gotta be feeling the heat in his seat.

I liked Ty Johnson two years ago, but he was a disappointment last year. Coleman was just resigned because they really like him. He’s not gonna get the love, but he’s a solid jack-of-all-trades type back like Bilal Powell and definitely makes the team. Guy to watch is Zonovan Knight, a UDFA who they gave a $100K guarantee.

Seriously, try looking at the 17 D Linemen we got on the roster right now, and see if you could come up with the 7 players that you would cut.  I think both you and I think Curry could be a goner, and maybe Rankins is gone and Martin stays, but you still have a couple of tough cuts besides them.  Even carrying 10 D linemen is a lot to carry.

I agree, it’s very deep. I suspect they want that depth to get them through training camp, with the possibility of attrition thru injury.

Bit. Given JDs sad track record of signing placekickers you are probably right.
I believe It also begs the question of the special teams coach eye for talent pertaining to placekickers Quite sure JD isn’t making these decisions in a vacuum without any input from him

Here is an attempt to cut down the roster.... Jets will have a hard decision on a lot of players...

I cut it down but still am 5 over cutting Flacco. And only keeping 4 LBs.

I guess Hamilcar and Marshall will probably get put on PS and maybe Mcdermitt gets cut.

But that is still 2 over...

Maybe this shows the Jeff Smith and Wesco are done for.

We should bring back Ammendola. Even excellent kickers have gone through some rough patches and he has a ++++ leg.

Gonna be interesting. A good problem, the kind we haven't had for a long time. To make things even more interesting, I'll bet that at least 2 players not on this list are on the final roster. Edoga is toast but he will be replaced by a new OT (Reiff or Fischer).
