JoeNamathsFurCoat
When did “loving football” become a Joe Douglas prerequisite? 1st player he ever drafts would rather park himself at the local Fatburger, engage in Twitter wars with random fans, and stream himself playing GTA than get himself in shape to play the game. 1 2 3

I was thinking the same thing when I heard that. And his next pick, Mims, didn’t bother to learn the playbook when he showed up for season 2. Football is not very important to those two. I think the 2020 draft was a lot less in person and hands on than usual due to covid, no? That probably made it a lot easier for guys to pretend. I'm not giving an opinion on either of the players mentioned, just speaking to that dynamic of the 2020 draft.

We also learn new things on the job. The 2020 draft might have taught them to value loving football.

When Mangini was coach we made fun of them for drafting nothing but team captains. They seem to be headed in that direction again. When you value guys that are "high character" and "love football" you pass on guys like Thibs and Gholston. Some people may see that as a good thing, but it probably also contributes to passing on Sapp and Marino.

Who, by the way, I think is an underrated exec.

I still believe with the Jets dearth of weaponz last year and our QB's touted cannon arm, the coaching staff should've found a way to get Mims into the game more as a situational deep threat. But I guess they were trying to set a precedent regarding their expectations for players. Our QB's development may have been stunted because of it. We were all kind of buying into “free Mims” early, but he didn’t do anything when he was on the field. On the plus side, the speculation that he was dealing with more than we were told is possible. He’s a beast at getting the ball and a downfield threat. If he comes close to his ceiling, the WR group would have be greatly improved. If he comes close to his ceiling, the WR group would have be greatly improved. His snap count went from 439 his rookie year to 279 last year. In nine games he played zero snaps. Unsurprisingly, his snaps were heavily weighted to the end of the year when WR injuries began piling up. For a guy who apparently is behind in development, that's a strange way to get him experience. Anyway, the hope that he can get near his ceiling -- as defined by his A+ measurables -- is IMHO long gone. Now I'd be happy if he becomes a situational deep threat that keeps other teams honest a few times a game. Look, I don't know what goes on behind closed doors anymore than the next guy, but if you have a player with a valuable niche skill set that happens to synergize with your QB's greatest strength why do we need him to be a well-rounded player who understands every position? If he's going to take up a roster spot, it's up to the coaches to find a way to leverage what he appears to be able to do reasonably well.
