Obviously Zach had good games in college.  You don't get drafted #2 overall if you don't play good games in college.

But what was said way back pre-draft remains true now, his college career was at a 2nd tier school playing mostly 2nd and 3rd tier competition.

It did not adequately prepare him for playing NFL level football.  And we saw that his rookie year.

Now, with a year (mostly) of actual NFL level play on his resume, albeit at a very low level of quality, the hope is he learned-by-doing, trial-by-fire, pick your cliché, and he is now ready to play at a high level with his much improved Offensive teammates.

Ultimately, talk about college, or about even last year, is entirely irrelevant.  All that matters is this year, which is more make-or-break for young Zach than most likely think.  Hopefully he rises to that challenge and pressure.  As has been stated repeatedly, his trouble isn't his physical toolset.

We drafted Zach Wilson @ #2 overall to be a top 5 or top 10 passing QB.  To be a Franchise QB who elevated the talent around him. 

To win games with his arm and via passing TD's.

Right now the actual confidence of a portion of our fanbase is clearly and unquestionably shaken, hence the rather extreme goalpost moving and both diminished and deferred expectations from that population of fans.

 

Don't confuse short term outlook and expectations for long term. Jones is the right choice in that role if that's what you're looking for as a ceiling.

Certainly a valid point, old friend.

But I might say that the Jets are hoping, right now, that Zach just gets to "Game Manager".

Anything more, I think, after Year 1, is no longer quite so "expected" as it might have been before, even within the organization.

He's a little baby Charmander. 

Sure, the team drafted him wanting/thinking he was a monster Charizard-to-be. 

But after year 1, they're likely saying "we just got to do everything we can to get him to Charmeleon and pray he can still evolve from there".

It's no sure thing anymore.

I’m guessing we’d all say he’s in a good place then.  He was better than Fields and a hair behind Lawrence, both of whom played top notch teams and defenses.  
Nobody brings up schedules and opposition, wasn’t said before the draft and isn’t being said now. 
QBs are drafted because of their talent.  Anyone who watched ZW, TL or JF could see their skills.  Teams don’t draft by their numbers, that’s for fans who don’t watch players and just read the compiled stats and rank them accordingly.
